Introduction:
The author was requested by Mr. W. (Bill) Whittle to carry
out a geological survey of Canadian Mono Mines Inc. claim BO
592199. This claim is the east half of the east half of lot 27,
Concession V, Madoc Township. It is situated about 0.8 kilometres
south of the centre of the hamlet of Bannockburn, Ontario, and
straddles Highway 62 (Figure 1).
Mapping consisted of traverses along Highway 62, and along a
secondary road west of and parallel to it. Lot lines were
utilized where possible and the river section was recorded in
detail. These surveys provide a good representative coverage of
the area.
Regional Geology:
Geological mapping of Madoc Township was carried out by Hewitt
(1968). His map shows the rocks of the Bannockburn area as being
sedimentary rocks of mainly clastic origin with some limey
sections.
Previous Work:
Much of the area was covered by prospecting in the mid to late
1800's, however, there is no record of any work on the claim.
In the 1980's Mono carried out general exploration over the
area including airborne EM and magnetics, and soil geochemistry.
No follow up has been reported.

Mapping Results: (Figure 2)
The Bannockburn area consists of ridge and low ground
topography. Ridges are controlled by the strike of more resistant
layers in the rocks, whereas the lower ground is infilled with
glacial debris and sand. Swamps are common especially near the
Moira River or where beavers have dammed creeks in the area.
Three rock types are present in the area, and all are
metamorphosed and folded sedimentary rocks of Grenville age.
Folding is very complex but has a north-northeast axial plane and
a tight fold form. Along Highway 62 grey limestones predominate
to the south giving way to medium grey quartz arenites and then
rusty weathering sulphide bearing arenite at the north end of the
claim block. Along the old road to the west bedded limey units
give way to grey arenites to the south and west. These units are
common along the river section, but local limey beds may be
present.
The river seems to follow the contact between these
metamorphosed clastic sedimentary rocks and the sulphide-bearing
units of similar composition which predominate west of the river.
All bedding values are general northerly to northeasterly but the
dip may vary from westerly to easterly. Minor folds are present
in many outcrops and define a south westerly plunge. Fold plunges
of the larger folds tend to be shallower than the smaller ones.
Figure 2 shows the geological data base and the interpreted
fold form based on rock type distribution. Facing evidence was
not observed, however, it is assumed that the folding is upright.
Using these criteria the original sequence had a basal limey unit
grading upward into bedded quartz arenites and finally into
arenites with minor sulphides.
![Page 7: Report on the Geology Madoc Township Cone. V, Lot 27 Ete ...€¦ · 2 Introduction: The author was requested by Mr. W. (Bill) Whittle to carry out a geological survey of Canadian](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052104/603e9ccb54433018731361dd/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
6
Economic Geology:
No significant mineralization was observed. Quartz veins
were observed at various locations and are noted on the geology
map. None contained visible sulphide mineralization. Sulphides
are common in some of the arenite beds but the lack of
exploration pitting indicates that economic metals are not
present in significant amounts.
Gold is present in a quartz vein west of the claim on Lot
28. Work was carried out in the form of trenching and shaft
sinking in the late 1800's, but no mining is reported.
Conclusions:
Geological mapping has outlined a sequence of limey and
fine-grained clastic sedimentary rocks of Grenville age. They
appear to have a basal limestone section overlapped by a quartz
arenite sequence with an upper margin of sulphide-bearing quartz
arenites. This sequence has been folded into a series of south
westerly plunging folds which give the rocks an overall north-
northwest strike. Geological mapping to the north east of
Bannockburn has shown that the rocks form a major anticline with
a mafic volcanic core. The Canadian Mono Mines Gold Inc. deposit
lies within the volcanic rocks.
