Gentlemen:

This report describes the results of a program of spectro-

metric radiation survey carried out to cover two small areas of your

property located in South Canonto Township where surface prospecting,

rock pitting and sampling have obtained encouraging results to warrant

further development. The survey data and the location of the rock pits

are depicted on the two plans accompanying this report, plotted to a

scale: l" = 50'.

SURVEYED AREA, LOCATION, ACCESS -

One of the surveyed areas (Plan No. l) is located in Claims

Nos. EO-41498 and EO-41499 and measures approximately 1400 feet

by 1400 feet. The other area (Plan No. 2) is located to the immediate

east of the campsite at Croker Lake and measures approximately 500

feet east-west, 1400 feet north-south.

The location of the first area is at the east central part of a

large block of claims you have in South Canonto and Miller Townships,

Eastern Ontario Mining Division. The second area is located at the

northeast boundary area of the same property.

2.

Access was made by car via Highway 509 to Ompah, and by

bush road and tractor road from Ompah to the campsite at Croker

Lake at the west part of South Canonto Township.

GENERAL GEOLOGY -

According to Map No. 1956-4, the areas are located within an

area of granite, granite gneiss and pegmatite. These acidic rocks are

intruding an east-westerly striking zone of crystalline limestone and

dolomite located to the east and north of your property. The intrusion

is apparently lit-par-lit to the east but forms a four mile wide batholith -

type body in the property area. The area covered by Plan No. l is on

a hill top with relatively shallow overburden. Strikes and dips of gneis

sosity indicated that it is located near a center of the batholithic body.

SURVEY DATA -

The radiation survey was carried out along picket lines cut at

100 foot intervals, turned off from an east-westerly base line which

was established at a direction parallel to the east-west township line.

Readings were taken at 50 foot intervals along the picket lines,

using a four-threshold Model TV-5 scintillometer. Measurements are

based on the spectral characteristics, or energy levels, of gamma

radiation from radioactive elements. A scaler was used for the read

outs with the instrument held at about 2-1/2 feet above ground. Details

of the instrument are given on the appendix accompanying this report.

At the pits, the probe was set on the ground.

T i readings, which measure the characteristic potassium,

uranium and thorium radiations, are given on the two plans accompany

ing this report. In addition, the calculated times of uranium counts

above background are given at the pit locations on Plan No. 1; calculated

c. p. m. uranium and c. p. m. thorium are given on Plan No, 2. Contours

are based on T j counts along traverses only.

It should be noted here that the T j readings do not represent

the total count across the entire gamma energy spectrum. Threshold

TQ at 0. 20 Mev. could be used for maximum sensitivity.

In all, 87 pits were checked and their locations tied on to the

new line grid in the Plan No. l area; two pits were checked and located

in the Plan No. 2 area. The identification of these pits was made by

prospector Clinton Kehoe, who conducted the rock pitting and sampling

in these areas.

SURVEY RESULTS -

Plan No. l Area: The survey outlined several radioactive

zones with T \ reading of over 600 c. p. m. Calculated c. p. m. uranium

and c. p. m. thorium varied from point to point. The most prominent

zones are located within a somewhat triangular area between L4W and

CANA EXPLORATION CONSUJ/rANTS LIMITED

L7E, 400' to 1000' south of the base line. All but 13 of the 87 rock

pits are located within this triangular area.

T i readings obtained at the rock pits, with the probe on the

ground and commonly within the small pits, are from 4, 600 to 27, 000

c. p. m. These are much higher than those obtained at the 50 foot

stations covered by the survey with the probe held at 2 l /2 feet above

ground. The pits are from 6 inches to 2 feet deep and as a rule very

small.

The calculated ratios between uranium over thorium are varied

from pit to pit and a considerable increment is noted at Pits Nos. 39

and 87 which happened to be covered by both surveys. The following

table gives the results at these two pits:Assay Result!!

of Rock Samples Probe above Ground Probe on Ground by Kehoe

(In c. p. m.) (In c. p. m.) in Pit No. T, Thorium Uranium T i Thorium Uranium

39 4,000 680 960 8,300 1,260 2,330 0.

87 2,500 460 430 21,000 1,160 12,880 0.

The two examples demonstrate that, at about 23 times back

ground uranium counts, the rock sample by Kehoe assayed 0. 07^o ^Og;

and at about 128 times background uranium counts, the rock sample by

Kehoe assayed 0. 12^o UgOg. Calculated times background uranium at

all other pits are therefore plotted on Plan No. l for comparison.

Plan No. 3 shows all available assay results of rock samples

obtained by Mr. Kehoe at the rock pits as reported to you by Mr. J.

C. Honsberger in a letter dated September 2 2, 1 969. It is evident from

correlating these data with the survey data that the assay results in

uranium are, in many cases, not comparable to what was indicated by

the times background uranium from the above two pits. While all pits

with high uranium indications assayed interesting values in UgOg, there

were several low indications, such as Pits Nos. 7 and 8, etc., where

the rock samples assayed 0. 17^o and 0. 18^0 UgOg. These irregularities

are inferred as due to the fact that a geiger-counter was used for select

ing small samples for assaying and the survey may not check at the

exact point where the samples were taken for assay.

The overall picture indicated that there is considerable leach

ing at the surface, and the uranium and thorium contents varied from

point to point. The exceptional high characteristic radiation for uranium,

thorium and potassium ( T\ readings) at the pits, and the many ore-grade

assay results of rock samples selected by an ordinary geiger-counter

from the pits, indicated that higher contents in uranium are to be ex

pected from the radioactive zones at depth.

Plan No. 2 Area: The survey outlined two narrow and ap

parently short zones with T j readings of over 600 c. p. m. The more

prominent zone is located to the northeast of the campsite at Croker

Lake. The uranium counts along this zone are in the order of 200 to

300 c. p. m. over outcrops. Our experience in other parts of Eastern

Ontario showed that such magnitude of uranium counts are of marginal

interest.

The other zone is located at the pit area of LIE. The uranium

count was just over 100 c. p. m. Readings at the pits registered eight

to twelve times uranium background. These readings are much less

than most encountered at the pits located in Area No. 1.

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS -

The surveys have established a line grid covering two interest

ing areas of the property where surface prospecting, rock pitting and

sampling obtained encouraging results to warrant further development.

There are 87 shallow rock pits in the Plan No. l area, which

is located on a prominent hill near the center of a batholithic body with

outcrops and shallow overburden in places. Selected samples from

these pits were calculated to contain an arithmetic average of 1. 38

pounds of I^Og and 16 pounds of Th02 per ton. Pulps from 35 samples

assayed 10 pounds per ton rare earths.

The survey outlined several radioactive zones in the Plan

No. l area, one of which measured about 1100 feet long, 100 feet to

600 feet wide. Seventy-four pits are located within this somewhat tri

angular zone. Extremely strong radioactivities were detected on these

CANA EXPLORATION CONSUI/rANTS LIMITED

Page 8: REPORT ON BORDUN MINING CORPORATION LIMITED SOUTH CANONTO ... · in the Plan No. 2 area. The identification of these pits was made by prospector Clinton Kehoe, who conducted the rock

pits with up to 185 times background uranium. Strong surface leaching

is indicated by the data. Previous assay results gave up to 0. 49^o

Us08 and 1. 84^o Th.02 from one of these pits (Pit No. 10). Although

samples from these shallow pits all carry uranium, the survey data

indicated that the uranium counts and ratios between uranium and

thorium vary from pit to pit and do not correlate with uranium contents

obtained by previous assaying of samples selected by a geiger-counter.

Higher pontents in uranium may be expected from these apparently

strongly leached radioactive zones at shallow depth.

The writer recommends to carry out an initial program of cross

section diamond drilling along L4E, from 400 feet south to 1000 feet

south, to a depth of 100 feet and to correlate the results by a program of

surface geological mapping. At -45 6 dip the initial program involves

about 850 feet of core drilling. This may lead to an extensive program

of development work for the possibility of open pit mining.

The results obtained in the Plan No. 2 area are of marginal

interest and no work is recommended at the present time.

Respectfully submitted,.1

Appendix - Details of Instruments, etc.

(a) Type of Instrument:- Model TV-5 scintillometer, service instrument, McPhar Geophysics Limited, Toronto.

(b) Specifications:- 4 Threshold; two types of read-outs - the rate meter and scaler. The scaler read-out circuits count the incoming pulses for a fixed period of l, 2 or 5 minutes. The counts are totalled simultaneously in three threshold channels (Ti, T2 , T 3). TI, at 1. 30 Mev. - measures characteristic potassium, uranium and thorium radiations. T2, a* 1.63 Mev. - measures characteristic uranium and thorium radiations. Tg, at 2. 50 Mev. - measures diagnostic thorium radiations only. The thresholds are fixed relative to each other and brought into proper spectrum position with the aid of a thorium calibrating source and the calibration control. Measurement range on scaler: O to 100, 000 counts. The instrument operates from three "D" size flashlight- type alkaline cells. The sensitivity, on threshold 2, registers approximately 50 counts per minute on an in-situ measure ment over homogenous material containing l part per million uranium. The sodium iodide crystal in the probe unit is 1-3/4 inches in diameter and 2 inches thick. The console weighs 4 pounds and the probe weighs 2 pounds.

(c) Survey procedures:- The instrument was calibrated and checked every day. All three scaler readings were taken during survey and the counts were then resolved into net counts for uranium and thorium by calculation based on comparison of the counts registered at the different energy levels by the scaler. On the traverse lines, the instrument was at about 2-1 /2 to 3 feet above ground. At the pits, the instrument was set on the ground.
