Although divisional presidents set their own agendas and programs for their regional confer- ences, each conference offers similar activities and experiences in two general categories: performances and non-performance sessions. In that regard, they are miniature national conferences. The sessions that are offered at national conferences focus on issues that encompass the diverse interests and specialties of our constituency. There is great care taken to create a schedule that offers the most access to the most topics: we don’t automatically track athletic band sessions against wind ensemble presentations; we don’t automatically schedule composer sessions in conflict with research presentation; basically we don’t presume that any interest group within our organization wouldn’t be concerned and excited by every other aspect of our profession. Some of us have jobs that allow or require us to specialize in one aspect of our diverse wind band world; others, like me, direct concert bands, jazz ensembles and marching bands, and teach academic classes (with great optimism and some humor, I suggest that this may be as close as one can come to being a real Renaissance person!). There is great understanding of, patience with and even expectation of the need for our sessions to touch on aspects of our profession that are new, that are radical, that are pioneering. Do we exercise the same understanding, patience and expectation with regard to repertoire of our confer- ence performances? Not quite – given the number and nature of comments that I was privy to after the last conference, and the two before. There has been great energy and passion, both positive and negative, elicited by the repertoire performed at our conferences. From the Podium

R e p o r tDear Colleagues,

The holidays are over; the spring semester has begun; we approach the season of biennial CBDNA Divisional conferences. Although divisional presidents set their own agendas and programs for their regional confer-ences, each conference offers similar activities and experiences in two general categories: performances and non-performance sessions.

Do we exercise the same understanding, patience and expectation with regard to repertoire of our confer-ence performances? Not quite – given the number and nature of comments that I was privy to after the last conference, and the two before. There has been great energy and passion, both positive and negative, elicited by the repertoire performed at our conferences. As president, I have heard mostly negative things, but it isn’t a fair sample (in that people who were upset by “raucous voluminous assaults” and “tasteless strings of garish sounds” were most anxious to present their opinions, and other less-agitated members apparently felt no need to come forward). I had my own personal opinion about each program that I heard, and came to wonder how the programs were chosen. What does the conductor of an ensemble selected for performance

at a national conference think others expect of him or her? I personally don’t expect performances that must include the biggest, the first, the most difficult, the most complicated, the newest. Certainly some of that is what makes a conference exciting, but is there a limit to how much we can absorb or even endure over the course of three days or so? Let’s speak about it.

We have more composers than ever affiliated with our organization, which creates a very interesting opportu-nity to hear and premiere new works. That, in itself, is commendable for an organization that espouses to be on the cutting edge of the state of the art, for an organi-zation whose members are part of the academy which embraces the advancement of knowledge. (As the 50 CBDNA-sponsored Composers Datebooks remind us at the close of each broadcast. “All music was once new.”) So, aesthetically and philosophically, how should we approach all of this new music, some of which may not stand the test of time? Or, more fundamentally, how does the opportunity to “premiere” intersect with the greater art of programming? As Carolyn Barber (University of Nebraska – Lincoln) said in a note to the North Central Division, “as an organization we are still largely without any meaningful musical discussion associated with performance. We talk about pedagogy, literature, history, technology; we ask questions of com-posers about process, goals, and inspiration. However, we never ask each other: why did you organize your concert program that way?”

Do we program differently for conferences? If so, why? We should start to speak openly about our aesthetic choices, even while we acknowledge that the issue of aesthetics is very complex. Anthony Tommasini, music critic for the New York Times, spoke of the historical

divide between the canon and the new (New York Times, February 14, 2010)

“Increasingly in recent years adventurous ensembles and young artists have been drawing their programs from all camps of contemporary music, camps that were once engaged in fierce ideological battles. The biggest combatants were practitioners of complex, cutting-edge 12-tone composition who claimed the intellectual high ground and those who still wrote sonatas, symphonies and such, in essentially major and minor keys.”

We are the perfect example of Tommasini’s “adventur-ous ensembles and young artists”; for years we have successfully embraced music from all camps, perhaps because we perform in the arena of higher education. But how do we put the pieces together to create compel-ling programs – one finale after another would exhaust an audience, even if it showed the ensemble to be capable of extraordinary stamina and prodigious tech-nique. Should our conference performances yield some program time from the “newest” in favor of the gems of the past? I know that fine performances of standard repertoire are extremely valuable, and especially so for the CBDNA member who is in his or her first few years as a college wind band conductor, or attending their first conference.

Let’s openly discuss the art of programming. Carolyn Barber has given me permission to include a chart of the repertoire that has been performed at the National and North-Central Divisional conferences for the last five years (see below). It is a fine launching point; the other divisions could conduct similar compilations. Let’s see what we are playing, and ask, Why? (I’ll spare you all the abbreviated Hegel Dialectic insert that I had planned here.)

Please let me know if you would be interested in par-ticipating in an organization-wide discussion of the “Art of Programming.”

Sincerely,Tom Duffy

PERFORMANCE APPLICATIONCBDNA Conference concerts will be presented in three venues: the concert halls at the University of Washing-

ton, and both the main stage and chamber music hall in the famous Benaroya Concert Hall. We encourage applications from ensembles with programs for both chamber wind and larger wind ensembles.

1. Submit a compact disc recording of a single or mul-tiple “live” (i.e., unedited) performance(s) of your band from the 2009-2010, academic years; include a written listing of all works performed with appropriate track listings on a separate sheet of paper;

2. Submit a proposed program that includes repertoire and commissions that would be for ready for perfor-mance by March 2011;

3. Send both, with a cover letter, no later than March 16, 2010, to:

Bill Wakefield, Director of BandsCatlett Music Center, Suite 116500 West Boyd StreetUniversity of OklahomaNorman, OK 73019Band Office Telephone: 405.325.2731

4. IMPORTANT: do NOT identify your ensemble on either recording, list of tracks or proposed program. I will number the application materials and distribute them to the review committee (without the cover letter) to ensure a “blind” and unbiased selection process;

5. Results determined by April 1, 2010.

NewsNew Website Service LaunchedCBDNA announces the launching of a new web ser-vice.

Until now, members with services or products to of-fer each other were prohibited from announcing them through the CBDNA website if there was money in-volved. At a think-tank meeting in September, hosted by Tom Verrier at Vanderbilt, we reconsidered the whole issue. Why, for example, shouldn`t Frank Battisti be able to post an announcement for his newest book - The Wind Band of the 23rd Century - just because one would have to buy the book? We cleared the concept with our legal advisors and the site went live this evening.

3 - NEW PUBLICATIONS/NEW RECORDINGS/CONDUCTING SYMPOSIA FALL 2009

So, what used to be called Classifieds in the Member Services section is now called “Job Postings” and the new category, “Classifieds” is for you to post things that are available but cost money: textbooks, methods, CDs, scores, etc. The service is available for CBDNA members. We`ll monitor the section for a few months to make sure that it is useful and active.

Thanks so much to Larry Hoffman for assembling the webpage so quickly and well.

Visit the site and see the new Classifieds section. It will give you ideas.

John Mackey ResidencyFrom November 5 – 9, 2009, the Georgia State Uni-versity Bands and Metropolitan Atlanta Youth Wind Ensemble (MAYWE) hosted composer John Mackey for a residency on the Georgia State University campus. Mr. Mackey was present for rehearsals with the GSU Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Wind Orchestra as well as MAYWE. He gave private coachings to sev-eral GSU student composers and lectured to members of the GSU composition seminar class. In addition, he traveled to Snellville, Georgia where he worked with the Brookwood High School Symphonic Winds. The residency culminated in a concert of his music on No-vember 9, 2009.

Conducting SymposiaThe 2009 Arkansas State University Conducting Colloquium was held from November 12 through 14th with Frank Ticheli and Tim Oliver serving as clinicians. Jim Cochran from Shattinger’s Music Co. also provided a resource area complete with scores and other wind band materials. This annual event hosted participants from Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas and Mississippi and represented individuals from a wide variety of profes-sional backgrounds.

Participants selected works to conduct from a wide range of Ticheli compositions of varying difficulty levels. Moreover, each participant was able to visit and interact with the composer first-hand to gather his thoughts on his music while conducting it. Colloquium repertoire included:

AMEN!JoyLoch LomondPortrait of a ClownPostcardShenandoahSimple Gifts (Four Shaker Songs) Sun DanceSymphony No. 2 - Movement III: Apollo Unleashed

Dates and clinicians for the 2010 Arkansas State Univer-sity Conducting Colloquium will be announced soon.

4 - TREATISES AND DISSERTATIONS FALL 2009

The 2nd Annual East Tennessee State University Instrumental Conducting Symposium was held from June 14th through 18th on the campus of ETSU with Dr. Timothy Mahr, Director of Bands at St. Olaf Col-lege and prolific composer for band, serving as guest clinician, along with Dr. Christian Zembower, Director of Bands at ETSU, serving as host and clinician-in-resi-dence. This event included 11 conducting participants from Tennessee, North Carolina, Kentucky, Florida, New York, and Texas. The week’s activities included morning conducting sessions on repertoire for full and chamber ensemble, and afternoon lecture sessions by Dr. Mahr and Dr. Zembower on various subject areas related to conducting pedagogy, literature, score study and analysis, and concert programming and commis-sioning. The week’s activities were culminated on Thursday evening, June 18th, held at 5:30 in the Bud Frank Theatre on the ETSU campus. Each symposium participant conducted a band work on the program with the full laboratory ensemble, with Dr. Mahr fittingly concluding the week’s events in conducting one of his own works at the end of the concert. Plans are underway for next year’s symposium (June 14-18, 2010) with Dr. Andrew Boysen, Jr., Director of Bands at the University of New Hampshire and another prolific composer for band, confirmed as the guest clinician for the week. The University of Texas at Austin 2010 Art of Band Conducting and Rehearsing Workshop will be held Sunday through Thursday, June 13th-17th, 2010, and will feature UT faculty members Jerry Junkin, Robert Carnochan, Richard Floyd, Scott Hanna, and Robert Duke, along with special guest John Mackey. The rep-ertoire includes music by Dvorák, Hindemith, Holst, Mackey, Mozart, Susato, and Whitacre. Participants will conduct both the UT Summer Wind Ensemble and Chamber Winds, receive valuable feedback from all the clinicians, and participate in panel discussions and sessions dealing with literature, score study, rehearsal techniques, ensemble motivation, conducting technique, and personal musical growth. The fee is $600 for partici-pants and $350 for observers. Registration will open on February 1st, and enrollment will be limited to the first 24 paid participants. There is no limit for observers.

Treatises and DissertationsMatthew O. Smith, A Conductor’s Analysis of Three Wind Band Works of Joel Puckett (DMA Document, Michigan State University, 2009).

Joel Puckett is a contemporary American composer who has received considerable success with his first three works for wind band. He is a composer that is comfort-able working in a variety of mediums, including both large vocal and instrumental ensembles, chamber music, and solo works. Though relatively young, Puckett has distinguished himself with a characteristic composi-tional voice.This is the first examination of Puckett’s band works beyond performances. The purpose of this document is to provide the wind band conductor with insight as it relates to the preparation and performance of Puckett’s works. Information regarding the structural and affec-tive components of his music, as well as its relation to the concept of program music is discussed. The first chapter contains a biographical sketch, an overview of his compositional process, and a discussion of program-matic elements as related to Puckett’s music. Puckett’s first three works for wind band, Ping, Pang, Pong; Blink; and It perched for Vespers nine are studied in subsequent chapters.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES FOR THE REPORT

Submission Requirements:1) MS Word Attachment2) E-mail message to: [email protected]

For programs:Please include your STATE and DATE OF PERFORMANCE in all submissions. The CBDNA Execu-tive Board and the editor encourage program submissions for specific concerts in performance order rather than repertoire lists for semesters, tours, or academic years. Many CBDNA members are as interested in how members program as they are in what they program.

Submissions will be edited as necessary
