Report: Adult Autism in Californiato Double in 5 Years

President's Message

Our new report, Autism Rising, detailsthe stupdendous growth of autism inour state since the 1980s. Did youknow:

• California has experienced a 28-fold increase inDDS (Dept of Developmental Services) autism casessince 1987?• Calif's adult autism population will double in fiveyears and triple in ten?• About 1.2% of Calif male births yield autism cases?• Autism intakes into the DDS system now representsabout 5,000 births per year?

Do these numbers matter? You betthey do—our population ofdependent and disabled adults isnow so vast that it will takesweeping, structural reform toprovide even the most basic

programs and housing.

Our report is already opening the eyes of legislatorsand other policymakers who were unaware of the
