1.0 INTRODUCTIONA Quantity Surveyor manages all costs relating to building and civil engineering projects, from the initial calculations to the final figures. To master this profession, one need to learn it practically as it requires a lot of practice that involves calculating and measuring. In IUKL, this course is still consider as a fresh course as it was only introduced on 2011. Whoever registered for this course will not just learn the theory part of the course but also will undergo industrial training as this is the main important phase.I am entrusted to undergo my industrial training at SBA Consultant for three (3) months before I can complete my subject course in order to graduate. For now I have completed half of the period required for my training. During these 3 months working here I am exposed to many new things which are very valuable for me to learn and carry out with devotion when I face the real world of working in the future. Undergoing for industrial training has become one of the curricular that college student compulsory to attend especially for those who studied at IPTA or IPTS. The motive of this action is to expose students and let them experience the environment of the real world of working before graduating. It is also to prepare students to face the real challenge and learn how to find solution when problem encountered besides completing the course.Besides that, it can prepare students on how to polish more their soft skill especially on how to communicate with others and learn to do work in a group. At college students usually communicate with people around their ages but when working there are differences in ages and this required communication skill. The period for completing industrial training is different according to course. Most of the courses need to undergo 6 months training period in order to complete it as for others only 3 months but the period of time undergo this training is not the measurement to ensure the students will get full benefit out of it. If the students itself doesnt know how to grab the opportunity given even undergoing training for 6 months would be useless.

3.0 SUMMARY OF THE JOB FUNCTIONS OR TASKS GIVEN TO THE STUDENT BY THE ORGANIZATIONDuring my industrial training period, I was cherished with practical experiences, knowledge on site procedures and general knowledge on industry. Since I arrived here, I have been given all kinds of task. This task is similar to the real task of a real life QS and with this task, it can help me practice to become a real QS one day. For the first two weeks of my industrial training, just like every internship, it begins with ice-breaking session as I get to know all of the staff members including the bosses. The following day, I received my first task and that is to do the measurement for Bar reinforcement in Footing and column stump in the project of Menaiktaraf Unit Kecemasan Hospital Batu Gajah, Perak (Store Integration) (refer APPENDIX 1). My senior QS gave me several days to complete this task. Furthermore, after finishing this task, Ive been given a brief knowledge about S.O.A ( Schedule of Accomodation ) and I must key in this S.O.A into the excel. ( refer APPENDIX 2) After that, Ive been ask to do the checking of arithmetic error on the Tender Document in the project of Kasugi Prima Sdn. Bhd which involves construction and completion of 2 office Towers. Arithmetic error happens when there is an error of the price and the value of sum. If there is error, I have to do the correction by writing down the correct price or sum. The second week of my internship begins with a task that mostly involves doing measurement. Ive been told to calculate the volume of excavated area under the project of Bangunan Balai Majlis in Janda Baik. On the next day and the remainder of the week, Ive been given a task that involved doing taking off for a few current projects.

In week 3, Ive been asked to attend a kick-off meeting with my boss, En. Sr. Ghazali at 1MDB, Sg. Besi for the project under 31 Rad Kajang. This is my first ever meeting and Ive learned a lot about this meeting. Basically, the kick-off meeting is the first meeting with the project team and the client of the project. This meeting would follow definition of the base elements for the project and other project planning activities. This meeting introduces the members of the project team and the client and provides the opportunity to discuss the role of each team member. Also in week 3, Ive been asked to do the tender report partially as I must only do the elemental cost comparison. The elemental cost comparison will compare the price between all of the contractors. In this case, there are 4 university and 5 contrators and I must key in all of the prices for these 5 different contractors in 4 university (refer APPENDIX 3). After completed doing this task, Ive been given another task by Mr. Rahim and that is to do the taking off for structural materials of Block F Bioprocessing under the project in UTM. Ive completed and submitted this task within 2 days (refer APPENDIX 4). I begin writing my industrial training report in week 4. Also in week 4, I received a special task from my own boss, En. Nazli. Ive been told to do the taking off of external and internal wall and doors under the project off Cadangan membina Rumah Mesra Rakyat 1 Malaysia. To me, this task is very special because it was given by my own boss (refer APPENDIX 5). While doing this task, I oftenly refer back to my senior qs and get their help. I completed this task on the following day. Still in the same week, I received another task from my boss under the same project but I have to do the taking off for different item which is the floor slab (BRC), ground beam and roof beam.

On the first day in week 5, I received a task from En. Akmal which I have to measure the external and internal wall, floor, water tank and roof under the project of Cadangan membina dan menyiapkan pusat pengeluraran induk baka dan benih udang laut SPF ( Specific Pathogen Free) di atas lot PT 14753 di Kampong Telaga Putat, Daerah Setiu, Terengganu Darul Iman.. I have no problem completing this task as the item that I need to measure is not so complicated. During the month of April, I received a lot of task which involved doing calculation and taking off. Besides that, I also have been asked by Mr. Zulkhairy to do the schedule of rate for the academic block, airport, apron, built in furniture, civil works, piling and signage under the project of CSA Miat, Subang. It takes me 2 days to complete this task (refer APPENDIX 6). Other than that, for the next 3 weeks, Ive been told to do a lot task that relates with measuring and doing taking off. One of it is Ive to calculate structural items like pile cap. Ive never measure pile cap and this is something very new for me. So, before I do the measurement, my senior qs helped me by explain how to measure it and sooner after that I can easily measure it myself. Besides that, I also need to measure architectural works like ceiling, floor finishes, sundries and sanitary fittings. For the architectural works, it is under the project of Cadangan projek perumahan di atas lot 1257, H.S CD) 109229 (Fasa 2) yang mengandungi rumah teres 2 tingkat ( 21x60 = 73 unit) dan rumah teres 2 tingkat ( 21x60 = 34 unit) Senawang, Negeri Sembilan. (refer APPENDIX 7)During the second week of May, Ive attend another meeting with my officemate, Kak Wan at Tapah for the project of Hospital Tapah. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss about the current progression of the project. On the following day, me and 2 other interns went to Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia to rearrange and compile the tender document as there are a few documents that are placed wrongly. This is under the project of Cadangan menaik-taraf rumah mayat Hospital Teluk Intan, Perak.

After that, on Friday 10th May, Ive been asked to do the tender report and this time my task is to do the experience in similar project in last 5 years and the current project in progress only. This task is under the project of Proposed development for Pagoh higher education Hub, Mukim Jorak, Daerah Muar, Johor Darul Takzim, UTHM, Pagoh Polytechnic, Shared Facility, IIUM & UTM (refer APPENDIX 8).During the start of week 9, most of the task that I received are no longer a stranger to me like doing the checking of arithmetic error. I have to check the error of arithmetic in the tender document under the project of Cadangan membina dan menyiapkan pusat pengeluraran induk baka dan benih udang laut SPF ( Specific Pathogen Free) di atas lot PT 14753 di Kampong Telaga Putat, Daerah Setiu, Terengganu Darul Iman.. This project is under the guidance of Mr. Akmal. Apart from that, Ive also received another similar task from Mr. Rahim which is to do the elemental cost comparison for the project of Proposed development for Pagoh higher education Hub, Mukim Jorak, Daerah Muar, Johor Darul Takzim, UTHM, Pagoh Polytechnic, Shared Facility, IIUM & UTM.Another week rises as my industrial training comes closer to the end. In week 10, my own supervisor, Mr. Johari has told me to key in the rate and sum up the total for preliminaries, BQ, provisional sum and final summary for tender documents under the project of Cadangan membina dan menyiapkan pusat pengeluaran induk baka dan benih udang laut SPF, Daerah Setiu, Terengganu Darul Iman. This task took me about 2 days to complete it. Finally, for the last 2 weeks, Ive taken this time to complete my industrial training report and also at the same time doing some minor office work.

4.0 PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED DURING THE TRAINING AND HOW THEY WERE HANDLEDMy industrial training cannot be described as a perfect industrial training as there were several problems that me and my office mates need to encounter. One of the things that Ive learned is that in a construction field especially quantity surveyor, having this kind of problem is normal as we work together with engineers, architect and contractor and when you work in a big group involving a lot of parties, it tends to develop uncertainty on certain matter and can cause problems. In Pakatan Ukur Bahan Sdn Bhd, most of the problems that we need to face involved drawings. Some of the drawings that we received have errors in scale after been checked for a few times. To overcome this problem, we have to use other scales and we cannot just simply choose other scales as we must find the nearest value. To do this, we have to use a special method that involves calculating and it can be pretty complicated. After we find the nearest scale, we will use that scale to measure. Although it can get a bit confusing, I can always refer back to my senior QS and get his/her help.Other than that, sometimes in the drawing, there are a few missing materials and this will be difficult for us as we dont know whether the material is really not been used or the engineer forgot to put it in. So to overcome this, we frequently checked with our engineer to confirm with him about this matter. This is very important because if we didnt confirm it with the engineer, it can cause havoc and the project might get suspended because even one tiny mistake can cause a lethal damage.Besides that, we also faced some problems involving tender documents. Sometimes inside the tender documents, the documents inside are misplaced and incomplete and this required us to detach the tender document and redo it one more time. Usually this is an individual error and that particularly person should be more focus and not to be careless. Also, this tender document might have some missing value in it and to fix this, we have to print out one of the document that have the missing value and do the correction.Conclusively, all of the problems that occur during my industrial training were settled effectively as we all work together to solve this problem. An old saying goes Life is not a continuum of pleasant choices, but of inevitable problems that call for strength, determination and hard work. We all in Pakatan Ukur Bahan stand by this inspiring quote.

5.0 SUMMARY OF THE EXPERIENCED GAINED BY THE STUDENTSAlbert Camus once said You cannot create experience, you must undergo it. When I first start my training, I can honestly say that Im like an empty jar waiting to be fill. This is my first time undergoing an industrial training as well as my first time working. I had zero experience in a real life working environment and with this industrial training I can learn and enhance my quantity surveying knowledge as well as experience it myself being a real life Quantity Surveyor. Here, Ive learned a lot things and most of it involve doing measurements. For instant, Ive learned how to measure complicated materials like pile cap, apron, and much more. Although Ive already been exposed with this complicated materials in college but here in the office, Ive learned even more about these items. Moreover, Ive also learned the easy way to measure certain items without any confusion or doubt. This is very important for me as I can transfer this way of measuring into my college works which can be very effective.Other than that, Ive also learned about the tender document which Ive never know about. This is totally something new for me. Basically, tender document consists of bills of quantity, condition of contract and also drawings. Ive experienced compiling this tender document and most of this tender documents are very thick and can be pretty heavy.Besides that, all of my life, Ive never been to a formal meeting. During my industrial training, Ive finally experienced attending a formal meeting with my boss in 1MDB at Sg. Besi. The meeting that Ive attended is a kick-off meeting. Basically, a kick off meeting is the first meeting between the client and the contractors, engineers, quantity surveyors as well as other important parties that involve with the project. Ive experience the real environment during the meeting in the meeting room and at the same time, gain a bit of knowledge as well because just like Albert Einstein once said The only source of knowledge is experience.Apart from that, Ive also experienced one of the most important thing which is working together as a team. This is very important especially in the construction field as engineers, contractors, and quantity surveyors must work together for one project if not, that project is impossible to handle. Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is a progress and working together is a success. Thats the most important thing.Lastly I would like to say that life is a series of experiences, each one of which makes us bigger, even though sometimes it is hard to realize this. For the world was built to develop character and we must learn that the setbacks and grieves which we endure will help us in our marching onward. As for me, Quantity Surveying is the path that I would like to go and with enough experience, it can help me reach there.

6.0 CONCLUSIONNowadays, every inch of knowledge could be gain. To become a Quantity Surveyor, one must have enough knowledge about the profession no matter where u go or where u study. Industrial Training is a pivotal period for students that hold the quantity surveyor major because this is the most important phase of all as quantity surveying is more on practical rather than just theory wise. With industrial training, the students can get ready and explore the real environment of the profession. I have learnt a lot of valuable things while working here. I realize that learning theoretical is never the same when it comes to practice. There are a lot more to master than just learning from books. I also learned it is very important to know how to work as part of the team especially when you are working in a big organization. In order to complete the task given timing is also another crucial thing to take care of.As is it known, the world of working is a completely different phase compared to the time when we are studying; therefore by going for an industrial training it is in hope that the students are well prepared and have high confidence to serve the community. Students have to carry a big responsibility when working at industry and carry it with honesty and sincerity.Furthermore, I just want to say that its a huge honour for me to undergo my industrial traning in Pakatan Ukur Bahan Sdn Bhd. Everybody here treated each other like a family and we helped each other a lot as well as working together as a team. Although all of us not handling the same project, we still work as one because we believe that all for one and one for all. Everything can be easier if we all work together as one. Before I close this report, I just want to say that my beloved college, Infrastructure University Kuala Lumpur (IUKL) has provide a fantastic mechanism for the students especially Quantity Surveying students to explore and get deep information about the QS field with the Industrial Training Program. Words cannot describe how happy and grateful I am to have undergo and completed this industrial training so Ive decided to end my conclusion here. Thank you.

SUMMARY OF EXPERIENCE When I first start my training, I can honestly say that Im like an empty jar waiting to be fill.
