History of Reno Air Races The Reno Air Racing Association (RARA) sponsors the National

Championship Air Races and Air Show at Reno Stead Airport northof Reno Nevada.

The National Championship Air Races and Air Show take placeannually during September. The races started in 1964 and featured

multiple laps and multiple high performance aircraft on closedovoid courses ranging from 3 miles (Biplanes, Formula 1) to 8.5miles (Unlimited, Jet and Sport).

The first Reno air races in 1964 and 1965 were set-up by WWIIflying ace Bill Stead and was located at Sky Ranch airfield 20 milesto the east of Stead on a 2000 foot dirt runway which today is calledSpanish Springs. When Stead AFB (named after Bills brother,Croston Stead) closed in 1966, they turned it over to the public foruse and the races have been there since then.

What it takes to get the head on shot

Planes are affected by turbulence so they will movearound.

Each pilot flies his/her own line. Speeds will vary Example, if a plane flies 400 mph he is going 587 feet per

second. So if you have 1/320 shutter speed your subject will move

1.8 feet while the shutter is open. Example, if a plane flies 499 mph he is going 732 feet per

second. So if you have 1/320 shutter speed your subject will move

2.3 feet while the shutter is open.
