RENFREW COLLINGWOOD COMMUNITY NEWSJuly 20142

Last Saturday local resident David Beattie spent another day in his living room—something he does too often on sunny weekends, frankly.

But this time, David was out in the sunshine and chatting with others in the neighbourhood rather than reading indoors or watching TV.

Huh? How could he do the two at once? David moved his living room out into his driveway and across the sidewalk of his house at 5123 Aberdeen Street. He set up a sofa, four chairs, two coffee tables, a large roll-top desk, an electric fireplace complete with fake burning coals, lamps, vases, rugs and even a gurgling fountain right out there under the sky for all to see.

And see it they did. Aberdeen Street, especially the section between Wellington Street and the Skytrain path, is a pedestrian and bike access to Joyce-Collingwood Skytrain Station, bus depot and shopping hub centred on Joyce and Vanness streets.

Operating more or less on the “build it and they will come” principle, David’s intention was to invite people going to and from the hub to stop awhile, have something to eat and drink—barbecued chicken wings and iced cranberry and soda were on offer—perhaps meet others from the near vicinity, and learn about a new initiative he’s leading, the Joyce-Collingwood Social Circle.

“There were at least a dozen people who stopped, sat down and spent between five minutes and an hour or so chatting with me and housemates,” he told the Renfrew-Collingwood Community News. It was successful, but he intends to do it again and again to build awareness of and participation in the JC Social Circle.

This is simply a venue and opportunity for people living within walking distance of the Skytrain station to meet others in the area and to build relationships.

He notes that the Collingwood Neighbourhood House has been doing precisely this for years, with considerable success. “This is meant to supplement what CNH is doing,” he said, adding that meeting in a coffee shop, at his house and perhaps the homes of others, in time, adds a less formal, more public dimension to the outreach.

Beattie, 55, lived and worked in East Asia for eight years, including four years in Taiwan. He is especially keen, he says, to build a social group that brings together Mandarin/Cantonese native speakers and white Canadians. In his view, both of these cultures are marked by reserve, politeness and a tendency to wait to be invited in rather than initiating social interaction. Given the language and cultural differences, this too often leads to many in each community choosing the easier and safer route of staying to themselves rather than interacting with each other.

David has made friends with a number of Chinese-Canadians and other Asian Canadians in recent months. He has invited those friends to help break the ice as the JC Social Circle gets going this month. At this stage it is meeting Thursday evenings at the Bamboo Café, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.

Anybody interested in this is asked to check out the group’s Facebook page of that name, Joyce-Collingwood Social Circle, or to call David at 778-707-9569. People are also invited to drop around to 5123 Aberdeen Street at almost any time.

Vancouver Kingsway

Kingsway Continental official opening and open house was June 7by Paul Reid

The MC was Jennifer Standeven, the city’s assistant director of business operations who welcomed everyone and told us more about the long journey it’s been to come from the Old Continental (on Granville St.) to the new Kingsway Continental (KC), starting with the purchase of the Ramada Hotel by the City in November of 2012. Standeven explained how it was the bathroom factor that really got the residents excited about their new home-to-be. In the KC, everyone gets there own bathroom compared to before where six or so bathrooms were shared between 30 or more residents.

Next to speak was Councillor Kerry Jang who grew up in the area and remembers “when this place was a bar, I used to go drinking here and get in all sorts of trouble.” On behalf of the Mayor and Council, Kerry welcomed the new residents to the neighbourhood. “This building really demonstrates how important it is for a city to put investments into housing for people. Not just anybody but for real people. Proper housing that gives you a good quality of life; your own room; your own bathroom, and in a good neighbourhood.” Jang also announced that the City has some money to put some new murals, similar to those that graced the Old Continental, up around in the area, and invited people to give their input.

Next, Standeven thanked the Collingwood Neighbourhood House and its executive director, Jennifer Gray-Grant, for making the transition of social housing into the community one of the City’s best. Gray-Gran then recounted how a number of service providers in the neighbourhood helped welcome their new neighbours. “The Collingwood Policing Centre has been excellent; the Collingwood Business Improvement Association (VanCity in particular); the Collingwood Library; Evergreen Community Health Centre, and a few residents have gotten involved. So it’s been a really successful collaborative effort.” This included the creation of welcome bags with shampoo, soap, hand lotion and other things that might be appreciated; an elementary school student who spearheaded a sock drive so that everyone would receive clean new socks; and how members of St. Mary’s Elementary, CNH and Frog Hollow created 123

original cards for the new residents. “So we had all these kind of efforts to welcome our new neighbours.”

Next we heard from some of the residents themselves, starting with Daniel Woodward. “I’m here to say thank you. This has been a life changer for all of us. This community is wonderful. Its hard to put into words, what it’s like to go from nothing, and to end up in such a wonderful place. We feel safe, and couldn’t be any happier. We have a future now.” Another resident, Terrence Ripley, recounted how just before leaving the Old Continental, the whole ceiling came down in his room. Also, he will not miss the bugs, the mice, the slamming of doors. “That building – if someone slammed the door on the 6th floor, you heard it on the main floor too.”

Resident Daniel Woodward toured us around and Chris Taulu, Jennifer Gray-Grant and Councillor Kerry Jang, said a few words. Photos by Paul Reid

Who are these people doing bocce, tai chi, dance-walking and attending library under the trees?Summer is finally here, and what better time than now to go outside, have fun and make new friends? The Collingwood Community Policing Centre, as part of their contribution to the Renfrew-Collingwood INTERactive program, has initiated two engaging activities—bocce and the Library under the Trees—in an effort to strengthen neighbourhood connections. These efforts are part of a larger effort by several community partners to Animate the Streets.

Bocce is a competitive game from Italy that involves rolling or throwing balls at a target, while the Library under the Trees is a makeshift station of books and lawn chairs where anyone can relax while reading outdoors. People from all ages and backgrounds are invited to participate!

Join the CPC during these times and at these places to move your body and exercise your brain:

This summer: Video stories from Renfrew-Collingwood INTERactiveby Rosanne Lambert

“Walk with me. Walk with me,” she said.

Later I would hear these words over and over. In fact they’re fixed in my head. As I go about my daily life certain words seem to take on more and more dimension. These particular ones belong to a lady in my neighbourhood named Nasib, who said them with a lovely smile, bright eyes and a beautiful, accented voice.

As part of Renfrew-Collingwood INTERactive, Nasib plays a vital role in our community. She’s one of several volunteers at the grass roots of this program that gives diverse community members like me the chance to meet each other while accessing more physical activities. Oddly enough, yesterday I did find myself walking with Nasib and many others down Joyce Street, my body possessed by the music and lyrics of Pharrell Williams’ Happy. Gosh it’s funny how these things happen and I end up with a story to tell.

Over the past few years me and my colleague, Janet, have had an opportunity to hear quite a few stories from the community. Our role is to support a group of residents and University of B.C. students as they gather and capture these stories themselves. Just since last winter, there have been stories captured by Lindsey, Ignatius, Kacy, David, Annemieke, Patrick, Esther and Crecien. Through phone calls, emails, meetings, workshops, drawings,

photography, writing, recording and movements to energizing music, this very diverse group contributed an equally diverse collection of eight short videos of development and change occurring during 2013—the first year of Renfrew-Collingwood INTERactive.

I hope you’ll join us on a little journey starting Wednesday, June 25, as INTERactive releases each of these short video stories on a weekly schedule—on the flatscreen TVs at Collingwood Neighbourhood House and Renfrew Park Community Centre, as well as through our YouTube channel, ConnectingDiversity, and on Facebook and Twitter, INTERactiveRC. Our final release on Wednesday, August 20, is a montage of all eight videos.

Over the summer you’ll see Nasib’s story, Brian’s, Axel’s, Wendy’s and Paula’s, and more. Maybe you’ll discover some other things about Renfrew-Collingwood and share them with your friends, neighbours and family. Maybe I’ll even see you dancing down the street sometime.

Walk with me.

How active are kids in Canada?

Kids need room to move! Encourage a mix of activities throughout a child’s day. That’s one of the recommendations of Active Healthy Kids Canada’s 2014 Report Card on the Physical Activity of Children and Youth: Is Canada in the Running?

This is the 10th anniversary of this the most current and comprehensive annual assessment of the physical activity of children and youth in Canada.

For the first time, this report card reveals how Canada stacks up against 14 other countries. The report finds that Canada trails at the back of the pack for overall physical activity.

Get moving with the Physical Activity and Nutrition Program Subsidy Incentive With this initiative from the BC Ministry of Health, participants can get up to $50 towards physical activity programs and services (such as fitness centre passes, lessons, yoga, swimming) or an eligible nutrition program.

You need to book an appointment for a “Personal Health Risk Assessment” with a physician and have an “Rx for Health” completed. Find more information on this webpage: https://www.healthyfamiliesbc.ca/home/physical-activity-and-nutrition-program-subsidy-incentive

Family tree tips for finding your ancestor’s home using Google Mapsby Loretta Houben

Part of the joy of discovering where your ancestors lived is being able to visit their old home in person. However, for most of us the expense of such a trip puts this idea out of the question.

But once you know the former address of your relatives, either by searching the censuses or other documents, did you realize you are able to view the place where they came from in virtual reality? I’m talking about the wonders of Google Maps, which has recently been updated so you are able to navigate the globe easily.

The URL link is maps.google.ca and once you are in the website, simply enter the address you wish to research in the upper left-hand search bar, and voila, it’s like magic!

With Google Maps’ wonderful navigation tools, you can click on street view, which is directly underneath the bar where you entered the address. Once there, you will be in a picture of the actual street.

In the new edition of Google Maps there is a large bar along the bottom of your computer screen. The box on the left shows a close-up of the map, the next box shows the home you are researching. Click on “hide imagery” to get rid of the bar. Then you can navigate down the street by using your left mouse button, and go in a

complete circle by holding the button down and moving to the left or right, or click on the arrow which appears in the middle of the street and travel down the road all through the town or city which you are currently in.

For example, I looked up my great-great grandparents on the 1891 Wales and England census and discovered George Palmer lived at 51 West Street in Stoke-sub-Hamdon in Somerset,

England. He is listed as a glove cutter. I used Google Maps to zero in on the address and roamed up and down the countryside. I zoomed out a little and used the satellite option to hover above and get the feel for the area. Somerset is a beautiful place full of old ruins and a medieval priory. You can also zoom out of satellite view and look at the area in map view.

I have one warning. Once you start,

you will become addicted and spend hours travelling through new terrain. It’s an enjoyable hobby and one that adds depth and dimension to your old family documents. Best of all, it’s free.

Loretta Houben is a member of the British Columbia Genealogy Society and enjoys travelling the world using Google maps.

Cooling Down in Renfrew-Collingwood The hottest days of summer are just beginning. The beach is a long drive or bus ride away. How can you and the kids cool down without going too far?

The answer: Try wading pools and water/spray parks in your neighbourhood! Wading pools are shallow and more for splashing than swimming. They are only open a few days a week during the summer months. Spray parks turn on their water during the summer and are open most days. Here is a list of water fun at a park near you:

What Do You Do for Canada Day? I asked around to see what people in Vancouver do for Canada Day. This is what they said: “We go to the beach with our children and have a BBQ with friends!”―Allison “I work. Babies still arrive on Canada Day!” ―Amy (a doctor) “We check out the many attractions in the city and wave Canada flags all day long, eat hot dogs and popcorn!” ―Christine “I go to Canada Place to watch the fireworks at night.” ―Yang “I take my kids to Granville Island. There are lots of fun activities and live music on Canada Day.” ―Takao “We usually just stay home and have family over for dinner.” ―Maria Do you do any of these things? What will you do this year?

Happy Canada Day!

The Forever Young Project is a government initiative promoting inter-generational and intercultural opportunities for community engagement and inclusion in the Collingwood-Renfrew Neighborhood. This initiative is funded by a federal grant called the New Horizons for Seniors program and was developed by the Renfrew Collingwood seniors, youth and various community partners.

The project’s primary goal is to reach out to community residents living in isolation, particularly seniors and youth, and to foster plus build new relationships while participating in free or low cost planned activities. Bridging the generational gap and cultures plus strengthening the sense of belonging in our community is the vision for the Forever Young Project.

So get ready to have plenty of fun and activity this summer as the Forever Young Project gears up! The Renfrew-Collingwood neighborhood will be the host of coffee socials, workshops and events. We invite everyone to attend our inter-generational and intercultural activities at the Collingwood Neighborhood House, senior residents and familiar community spaces.

If you or someone you know would like to share, engage and connect with others in your community, please come and join the Forever Young Project activities in your neighborhood and make this your best year ever!

I am here with Robert Edwards. Robert, you were recently in Peru, could you tell us what was the purpose of your journey?

It was multifaceted and all to do with World Vision. One purpose was to see my latest sponsored child who is now two years old. Also, to see some of the accomplishments World Vision has taken on.

We got to meet the president of World Vision in Peru and some of the faculty at the head office in Lima. They were telling us they have a different approach that’s showing some really strong results. That is asking the children what their needs, problems, and as they get older, what their ambitions are.

What I started to realize when we first went to one of the schools, they were all really healthy looking kids, they were grade one; grade two students…we were at recess, and it was the leadership of the young children taking responsibility. Whether it was playing a game with balls or ring around the rosy. One of the things that really impressed me was that many of the girls taking the leading role in the activities.

Another thing that really impressed me at this particular school was the hygiene that they were teaching the children by having them, after recess, put disinfectant on their hands and wash their hands. The reason I stress these things is that in a lot of the homes I later visited, and areas I visited, they have no running water, they have no electricity, they have a dirt floor and their house is made out of adobe bricks. Possibly with two rooms, one room that is

Robert F. Edwards – Back from Peru Interview by Paul Reid

a bit partitioned off for a bedroom and the others for the children and a cooking area.

So with World Vision we’re starting to teach the youngest of the young hygienic procedures to get away from communicable diseases or communicable problems such as diarrhea and other intestinal infections. I am very strong on this part of the program due to the fact that tens of thousands of children die every year before age five due to preventable ailments such as diarrhea or pneumonia or other communicable diseases. Primarily for two reasons: one is poor hygienic practices and the other is malnutrition or not sufficient balanced diets.

So you met the girl that you sponsored?Yes I did. I don’t have to tell you or anybody in North America how difficult it is for a single mother to raise a child. This child had these beautiful big brown eyes. The mother glanced up at me and you could just tell how grateful she was to finally have someone help her. I felt more like a grandfather than a sponsor at that moment.

I gave her a copy of Grandpee and Coleman, one of the books that I’ve written for children, and she put it over her heart and said that she will treasure it the rest of her life. I have no doubt it will be an heirloom in their family

What was the surrounding area like? Like jungle, or urban? The surrounding area; it was very desert-like. I also don’t think that it’s very safe. When one of the ladies in our group wanted to break away for a cigarette break, she was told it was dangerous and to stay with group. I noticed that the grocery store was all barred up and you needed to ring a bell to get in, so that they could see if they wanted to do business with you. So, high crime rate.

In another village, high up in the Andes, well over 12,000 feet, we visited some of the sponsorship homes. Due to high altitude, World Vision has introduced guinea pigs. They give each family nine females and one male. This has really helped in relieving malnutrition, people getting protein from the guinea pigs.

Is this new?Started about four years ago. Now people sell some of them to the

restaurants, this meat is becoming popular.

Did you try it?No! But I hear it tastes like chicken.

Health. I was actually impressed by some of the medical facilities in the larger cities but disappointed by the medical centre in the remote area where we visited. They had only one doctor and one nurse for 10,000 people, and one motorcycle as their ”ambulance” for these 10,000, scattered across a large area where the roads are just dirt trails.

World Vision doesn’t leave any opportunity unturned. If they can see something that they can make better—they do it. It can be simple

or a big idea. They are always focused on the welfare of the child. And it’s the follow-up that is so important.

Every three months, a one of the staff interviews each child and family to make sure that what has been promised by World Vision is being done. You know, that support is not falling by the wayside. It is getting to the children, to the family. Each country has its own needs, so they adapt to the situation—what is needed to make life better.

Trust fund for little girl hurt by fatal domestic violence established

A trust fund to help the young girl who both lost her grandmother and was hospitalized after an incident of fatal domestic violence in Vancouver’s East End has been established by Adrian Dix, New Democrat leader and MLA for Vancouver Kingsway.

“After a fatal act of domestic violence left this little girl facing great loss and injury, both my constituents and people across this city have expressed a shared concern for her future wellbeing. Starting today, they can make contributions to the ‘Kingsway Child’s Fund’, established for her at the Community Savings Credit Union,” said Dix, who made the initial contribution to open the trust fund.

People who want to donate can visit any of the Community Savings Credit Union branches in the Metro Vancouver and Victoria listed below. Donations by cheque should be made out to “Kingsway Child’s Fund” and mailed to the Vancouver branch

In the coming days, there will also be information on how people from other parts of the province who wish to help can donate through different credit unions.

Donations can be made to the Kingsway Child’s Fund at any local credit union. The closest credit union is Community Savings, at 5108 Joyce Street, Vancouver BC or Vancity, at 3305 Kingsway (at Joyce)

Speak out against the cuts to Evergreen!

Vancouver Coastal Health is shutting down Primary Care (doctors/nurse practitioners) services at Evergreen, South Vancouver and Pacific Spirit Community Health Centres. The result – thousands will lose their doctors, many vulnerable people will have a difficult time accessing services and communities such as ours will lose vital health care. Worse, the solution will cost taxpayers more.

Help us stop a bad idea and work to improve health care in Renfrew-Collingwood and across the city.

Sign the petition at our office, at 5022 Joyce St and help speak out on twitter. Tweet directly at the Minister of Health, @TerryLakeMLA and Vancouver Coastal Health, @VCHhealthcare, use the hashtags #CHC and #bcpoli

LINC provides newcomers with language classes and resources For newcomers arriving to Canada, one of the biggest challenges is finding the right resources to help with the transition into a new community and culture. But something that is even more vital, and perhaps overlooked, is the importance of having a compassionate and accommodating group of people to help aid the process and provide support along the way. At the Collingwood Neighbourhood House division of LINC, the Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada program, both the instructors and childcare workers come together to create a warm and welcoming space for newcomers to learn English. If you are 17 years or older and approved for residence you are eligible to take part in LINC: an immigrant settlement service provided through the National Settlement Program. LINC is a free program designed to provide beginner and intermediate level English classes; the program also helps familiarize newcomers with Canadian laws, health care, and other useful topics. The program is divided into 8 levels and also offers a pre-beginner level (literacy) class. After submitting an application for LINC, an appointment for an English assessment test is scheduled to determine where participants should be placed. The Collingwood Neighbourhood House branch of LINC is one of the few locations that provides pre-school aged childcare for parents enrolled in classes. Dionne Wilkinson, the CNH LINC program assistant, says that the

most rewarding part of her work is watching individuals progress when they come through and develop a better understanding of the language and culture. Having worked in both the teaching and administrative side of the program, Dionne mentions that the program really helps newcomers learn about the resources that are available to them.

Nina Vacca who manages the child care program at the branch says that she she implements a “learn by play” model so that the child care program also helps promote wellness and overall development. “We have created programs that are based on a curriculum that corresponds to the child’s age. The programs are meant to aid in physical, emotional and

cognitive development so that the children are having fun, but are also learning,” says Nina. Nine, who works with 3 other staff members, says that the program is especially significant to her because she can relate to what it was like to come to Canada as an immigrant and get settled into a new country.

The CNH branch of LINC is located at First Lutheran Church on 5745 Wales Street, Vancouver B.C. If you are interested in enrolling in the program you can contact Dionne Wilson during office hours Monday-Thursday from 1-4pm, email [email protected], or phone 604-45108321. Alternatively, CNH settlement workers are available to help with information and the application and assessment process.

Local community kitchens and canning workshopsThe Renfrew-Collingwood Food Security Institute (RCFSI) brings people together through sustainable growing, local food, multicultural food traditions and healthy eating.

“Food security” means developing relationships, building community, and dealing with issues that cause hunger or make people worry about not having enough familiar, nutritious food to eat. This might include worries about money, difficulty reading or understanding a language, difficulty getting around or uncertainty about healthy food choices.

The food security programs are run by neighbours, for neighbours. Check out the RCFSI schedule and please remember to register. Spaces for workshops and community kitchens are limited and fill up quickly. You must register to secure your spot.
