“High-Mass Thermal Storage Appliance” constructed primarily of masonry materials.
Quickly burns large load of cordwood in “batch” mode. (Up to 100 lbs.)
Stores heat in thermal mass (12,000 lb)
Releases radiant heat over 12 or 24 hours depending on firing schedule.
Has combustion efficiency up to 98%.
Has overall efficiency up to 82%.
Very low emissions.

Infrared (IR) sensors are installed to monitor surface temperatures on all four sides.
IR data is collected continuously.
The heat output of the heater can be calculated from collected IR data.

Water heating loop is installed between the core and outside rock facing of the heater on the back side.
Hot water supplied by heater loop can be tied to the building’s heating system to displace oil usage.
Amount of wood burned is logged daily and the amount of fuel oil used by boilers is recorded.
The amount of oil displaced by burning wood in the heater can be directly calculated.

New EPA PM2.5 emissions regulations
FNSB “Non-attainment” area
Test variety of wood burning appliances the way they are normally used in the FNSB (with extremely dry cordwood, operator influence, etc.) to better determine actual impacts of wood-burning on Fairbank’s airshed.
Help make recommendations for FNSB and State Implementation Plan (SIP) regarding wood-burning regulations.
Develop Alaska’s potential to be a leader to set PM2.5 regulation as a model for other states and avoid promulgating legislation that typically bans some of the best wood-burning technologies.
