    Introduction

    4 5

  • As forerunners of electric mobility, Renault benefits from a decade’s experience in the design, manufacture, sales and after-sales servicing of electric vehicles.

Renault’s electric cars remain the most prevalent on European roads, totalling over 20% of all electric vehicles driven throughout the continent. The New ZOE remains the best-selling car in Europe and, Worldwide, the Group has already sold more than 300,000 electric vehicles as of today.

Renault was the first to believe in 100% electric mobility and continues to lead the way today. Innovation is in the brand’s DNA, and electric mobility has been a strategic focus for many years. In order to better meet the needs of customers, Renault is constantly improving, with vehicles that are increasingly autonomous, feature connected services that make charging and traveling simpler than ever, have high-tech designs, dynamic motors, and more. Over the last few years, Renault has launched the second generation of its bestselling utility vehicles Kangoo Z.E. and Master Z.E., and the third generation of its flagship model, New-ZOE and the New-ZOE Van.

Renault is also leading the way in the mobility of the future: whether connected or even autonomous, it is undoubtedly electric. The Group’s latest major innovation is the CMF-EV platform (Common Module Family for Electric Vehicles), unveiled in the MORPHOZ concept car. Designed exclusively for 100% electric vehicles, this new platform pushes the limits of modularity. It will allow for the creation of several different vehicles with varied purposes and chassis, thanks to its ability to house batteries of different sizes and heights. Taking full advantage of the specificities of electric mechanics, this platform will also offer each model an interior worthy of the category above.

The next phase of Renault’s broadening electric strategy involves diversifying into hybrid and plug-in hybrid electrification with two key offerings: E-TECH hybrid and E-TECH plug-in hybrid powertrains.

All vehicles with E-TECH powertrains guarantee electric-only starting every time the car is switched on, superior fuel efficiency thanks to innovative multi-mode gearbox, effective regenerative braking and high capacity battery recharging – achieved via expertise acquired on Formula 1 vehicles and existing electric vehicles in the Renault range.

The electrification of Renault models has been easy thanks to the versatile CMF-B and CMF-C/D modular architectures that were designed from the start to accept electric capabilities. In addition, the compact E-TECH powertrains can also be mounted in the engine compartment of the CLIO E-TECH Hybrid, ensuring there’s no compromise in practicality elsewhere.

The hybrid series-parallel architecture ensures there’s a wide range of combinations relating to engine operations and the most effective CO2 gains while in use on the road.

All E-TECH powertrains offer three levels of energy regeneration and regenerative braking:

    • Battery regeneration during decelerationWhen the driver lifts their foot off the accelerator and the gear selector is in Drive, the main electric motor works as a generator by recovering kinetic energy produced by the deceleration, turning it into electrical energy that is sent back to the battery.

    • B ModeTo recover more energy, the gear selector can be put into B (Brake) mode, increasing the level of regeneration allowed by the battery, up to an idling speed of around 4mph.

    • Regenerative brakingWhen the brake pedal is depressed, braking is triggered electrically, with mechanical braking support from the brake pads if necessary. The electric motor provides additional braking here, recovering excess energy and returning it to the battery that can be deployed again later on

    Renault’s EV expertise Innovative technology

    76

  • The advanced E-TECH powertrains have been created with knowledge gained from the Renault DP World F1 Team, inspiring the energy use and recovery systems that are key in ensuring all Renault E-TECH hybrid and E-TECH plug-in hybrid vehicle are as efficient and effective as possible.

Technology that’s found in an E-TECH powertrain – inspired by motorsport and Renault’s expertise in Formula 1 – can be broken down into two categories. The first is the way in which energy use and recovery can be optimised, while the other is the application of an innovative multi-mode dog gearbox for the first time in a production vehicle.

Renault engineers have been working with the Renault DP World F1 Team since 2013, sharing knowledge around energy management that filtered into the hybrid engines found in Formula 1 race cars. Now, they’re using that knowledge and technology and applying it to Renault’s range of E-TECH Hybrid and Plug-in hybrid vehicles.

As with a Formula 1 car, E-TECH powertrains are designed to use the optimal energy output to recharge the battery whenever the energy created is more than the required power. Then, kinetic energy recovered during deceleration or braking can be transformed into electrical energy to recharge the battery. This is then in reserve to assist with acceleration, or for all-electric operation in urban areas at lower speeds.

With similar foundations to a Renault DP World F1 engine with a combustion engine, two electric motors and a central battery, the E-TECH powertrain architecture is paired with a multi-mode dog gearbox.

In operation, the clutchless gearbox allows the vehicle to start in 100 per cent electric mode, significantly reduces the gap in acceleration during gear changes which means a smoother, more refined drive in production vehicles, as well as better performance.

    E-TECH: inspired by Formula 1

    8 9

  • The award-winning All-New Clio range has expanded with the addition of a new E-TECH Hybrid powertrain, making full use of the expertise gained from the Renault DP World Formula 1 Team in its application.

    Engine

The Clio E-TECH Hybrid makes use of a new-generation 1.6-litre petrol engine accompanied by two electric motors – an “e-motor” and a High-voltage Starter Generator (HSG) – and an innovative multi-mode clutchless gearbox. This revolutionary combination provides smoother gear changes that results in superior fuel efficiency.

    All-New CLIO E-TECH Hybrid

A 1.2kWh (230V) lithium-ion battery also features, allowing significant reductions in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, delivering the ability to complete 80 per cent of urban journeys in 100 per cent electric mode – selected via the MultiSense driving modes or via an ‘EV’ button positioned on the dashboard.

The E-TECH powertrain automatically starts the car in electric mode, as the gearbox is clutchless which means the engine does not need to be engaged when starting the vehicle. This means upon start-up, the All-New Clio E-TECH Hybrid is responsive and refined with maximum torque but also maximum efficiency operating in electric mode.

The All-New Clio E-TECH Hybrid’s powertrain automatically adapts to the driving conditions and the way in which it is being driven – managing its power supply accordingly, as well as the battery regeneration opportunities. The change from one mode to another is barely noticeable and requires no input from the driver – the E-TECH powertrain automatically decides the most appropriate mode for the situation to optimise efficiency and emissions, while continuing to deliver responsive and enjoyable driving.

    10 11

  • Performance and economy

The powertrain in the All-New Clio E-TECH Hybrid offers maximum efficiency and superior responsiveness, making it the most efficient and highest-performance Clio in the range.

Compared with an internal combustion engine, the All-New Clio E-TECH Hybrid saves up to 40 per cent in fuel and is capable of travelling up to 80 per cent of the time in electric mode – making it an ideal companion for urban

journeys. That said, the All-New Clio Hybrid will travel at speeds of up to around 27mph in electric mode.

Emitting as little as 98g/km of CO2 (WLTP), the All-New Clio E-TECH Hybrid returns fuel economy of up to 64.2mpg, but the advanced hybrid devices do not impede on practicality. The boot is still a versatile 300 litres, the rear bench folds flat and there’s room for a spare wheel.

A total output of 140hp makes this the most powerful All-New Clio in the range, completing the 0-62mph sprint in 9.9 seconds. A choice of modes selectable via the MultiSense menus – or buttons on the centre console – allow the driver to tweak the driving experience to one of the following modes:

    • My Sense: Best for everyday use, My Sense offers the best compromise in terms of performance and economy, using as much electric power as possible, but in the most efficient way.

    • Eco: Uses a more measured mapping of the accelerator pedal and adapted gear changing for the most economical drive.

    • Sport: Engages the full system’s potential all the time for faster responses and most rapid performance.

Information is constantly fed back to the driver via the main Easy Link touchscreen display as well as the instrument panel showing the energy flow to the drive system. A power meter on the driver display shows how aggressively the power is being requested – and by what means – while the battery meter on the other side shows the charge level in real time along with consumption figures.

  • More than seven million Renault Mégane models have been sold worldwide across four different generations since the family was introduced in 1995. With the New Mégane E-TECH Plug-in hybrid – introduced at the same time as a comprehensive update for the whole Mégane range – it moves into a new dimension, delivering maximum versatility and the chance for buyers to discover a new electric driving experience with low CO2 emissions and fuel consumption, whether it’s in urban use or on longer journeys.

The same powertrain that’s available in the Captur E-TECH Plug-in hybrid is found in the New Mégane across Iconic and R.S. Line specifications – the two models that make up the newly enhanced line-up following a suite of upgrades and enhancements for the popular family hatchback..

All New Mégane models benefit from redesigned exterior styling with new bumpers front and rear, complemented by new Full LED headlamps with distinctive C-signature daytime running lights that incorporate the directional indicators to give a high-tech, sophisticated look. At the back, a new LED lighting signature with dynamic indicators ensures the New Mégane continues to stand out,

The sporty new R.S. Line specification - available for the first time to Mégane customers – brings styling inspired by record-breaking Mégane R.S. models, incorporating R.S.-inspired front and rear bumpers with a Formula 1-style front blade, eye-catching new diamond-cut 17-inch Monthlery alloy wheels and R.S. badging to the exterior and interior.

Inside, the New Mégane benefits from a suite of new features and enhanced premium materials, with a new 10-inch TFT Driver Information Display and latest EasyLink touchscreen display – available with a choice of screens up to 9.3 inches in size, positioned neatly in the centre console. A range of upgrades to the specification on both Iconic and R.S. Line trim levels mean all Mégane’s are better equipped than ever, with new diamond-cut alloy wheel designs, front and rear parking sensors, reversing camera and Full LED headlamps standard across the range.

Premium materials ensure the New Mégane’s interior is more refined than ever, with Alcantara and leather trims available from the options list, while a suite of standard-fit Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) ensure the New Mégane is as safe as ever too. All New Mégane models come with lane-departure warning, traffic sign recognition and automatic high and low beam, while R.S. Line trim also includes an Active Emergency Braking System (AEBS) as standard.

The E-TECH plug-in hybrid’s battery pack is found beneath the rear seats, meaning the Mégane Sport Tourer’s capacious load area remains practical at 447 litres, with useful storage area beneath the floor for the charging cables – a domestic socket features as standard equipment and a Type 2 is available. The rear bench still folds flat, meaning the Sport Tourer’s load-carrying credentials remain intact, aided by the front passenger seat that also tips forwards to accommodate longer loads.

New Renault MEGANE E-TECH Plug-in hybrid Engine

Using the same E-TECH plug-in hybrid powertrain as the CAPTUR, the MEGANE Sport Tourer produces a total of 160hp from its 1.6-litre petrol engine, with 144Nm of torque from the engine and a further 205Nm from the 9.8kWh electric motor, delivering keen responses in combination with impressive fuel economy and an all-electric range of up to 30 miles.

  • Performance and economy

Like all E-TECH powertrains, the New Mégane E-TECH Plug-in hybrid starts up in electric mode – one of the key advantages of the E-TECH hybrid system. This results in lower fuel economy and smooth, quiet driving, but it also means immediate torque is on tap from the electric motor, like in the all-electric award-winning New ZOE.

The New Mégane Sport Tourer will complete the 0-62mph run in 9.8 seconds, but it’s the immediate torque availability and agility that ensure it’s so well-suited to town driving, while even in all electric mode it’ll reach speeds of up to 84mph (where permitted) for 30 miles, 118mph when the engine is engaged.

Out of town, the New Mégane E-TECH Plug-in hybrid is just as engaging, with the electrical assistance from the motor delivering an extra boost during hard acceleration.

Alongside rapid performance that comes from the assistance of the electric motor, the Mégane also returns impressive fuel economy and low CO2 emissions. When used fully optimising the E-TECH plug-in hybrid system, the Mégane is capable of returning up to 217.3mpg, while CO2 emissions are rated at just 30g/km, making the Sport Tourer an exceptionally enticing proposition for company car drivers.

MultiSense driving modes allow the driver to hone the driving experience, with a choice of three to pick from:

    • Pure: Selected on-screen or via dedicated button on the centre console, Pure switches to all-electric driving providing there’s enough charge in the battery

    • MySense: Optimises hybrid running for the most efficient drive and most efficient use of the powertrain. An E-Save feature reserves battery power (at least 40 per cent) so it can be saved for use later on, for example in urban areas, reducing tailpipe emissions in built-up areas

    • Sport: Offers maximum performance by combining all the power available from the petrol engine and electric motor combined

The Mégane Sport Tourer’s weight has only increased by 105kg with the addition of the batteries – located beneath the rear seat bench – but to ensure it retains a finely balanced driving experience that’s engaging and comfortable, the rear suspension has been enhanced with new multi-arm system, fine-tuned by Renault engineers.

  • Warranty

All new Renault cars are covered by a five-year warranty. It features an unlimited mileage limit in the first two years and up to 100,000 miles in the remaining three. E-TECH models are covered by an additional eight-year and 100,000-mile traction battery warranty for extra peace of mind.

The Clio is manufactured at the cutting-edge factory in Bursa, Turkey and was the first Renault model to benefit from new processes that make the company the number one large scale manufacturer for quality.

Advanced computer modelling enabled prototypes to be closer to production form than ever before, while new technologies were introduced to improve the quality of the vehicle, including invisible chassis welds and extensive use of lasers for greater attention to detail and more accurate measurements. There were more validation tests for electronic components than previous Clios, while over 930,000 development miles ensure a rigorous and extensive development programme.

The Captur – using the same modular CMF-B platform as the latest Clio – is manufactured at Renault’s Valladolid facility in Spain. In 2019, the 1,500,000th Captur rolled off the production line ahead of the All-New Captur arriving

in showrooms, but the facility has a long history dating back to the 1950s where production of the Renault 4CV began in 1953. Since then, the first three generations of Clio have been built in Valladolid before moving to Turkey for All-New Clio, making way for Captur and Twizy production.

The Mégane is manufactured in Palencia, Spain, alongside the popular Kadjar SUV that sits on the same CMF platform. A significant investment in the facility ensured growth in production with 1,350 cars produced every day, and a growth in workforce from 1,900 to 4,200 in an 18-month period following 600 million euros of investment between 2014 and 2016. The golden rule at the Palencia facility is that no imperfection should be passed on to the next production station, with checks at every stage of assembly and painting.
