Dear Friends and Colleagues,

It is a joy and a privilege to welcome you to the 19th annual Texas Conference for Women! Together, you form the heart of this unique community of extraordinary women.

We have learned that every woman who comes to this conference has a courageous spirit, a commitment to growth, and a desire to reach her full potential. We have designed this day (and are growing our year-round efforts) to support you in this vital journey.

Wherever you are on your path, whatever the obstacles along the way may be, we collectively have your back.

And if there is anything we have learned in the 19 years of hosting the largest conference for women in Texas, it is that there is power in community. That is why we have created this opportunity to learn from some of the most successful and intriguing women in America—and connect with some of the 7,500 women here today.

Our goal is that you leave here feeling inspired by our keynote speakers; informed by the more than 100 ex-perts who have come to share their insights about leadership, career advancement, personal development, social media, personal branding, finance, and health and wellness; and strengthened by knowing that you are part of this community of like-minded women.

With us today are high school juniors and seniors; recent college graduates; women rethinking their paths or seeking to advance to the next level; those returning to their workplace after taking time off to raise a family; and more. We honor each of your voices as important—and are grateful all of you are here.

We also thank our generous sponsors for their wise leadership in supporting women in the workplace.

Warmest regards,

The Texas Conference for Women Board of Directors

CONFERENCE BOARD WELCOME

SHARYN ALFONSI has contributed reports to 60 Minutes since 2015. Her investigation of the misuse of jailhouse informants in Orange County, California, drew national attention to a criminal justice system scandal. Another 2017 story on the success of a rural Mississippi school’s chess team flipped a common stereotype. In her first 60 Minutes report, she revealed that the Federal Emergency Management Agency was aware its insurance companies had committed fraud against Hurricane Sandy victims. Alfonsi also reported on climate change, cyber security, and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) among combat veterans. Alfonsi also works on the sports edition of 60 Minutes. She came from ABC News, where she was a New York–based reporter for five years who appeared regularly on all of the division’s platforms. For World News Tonight, she revealed that uniforms to be worn by US Olympic athletes were made in China. Reporting for Nightline, she showed the often-cruel world of the puppy mill industry, exposing factory-like breeding facilities in the Amish country of Pennsylvania.

Before her time at ABC, Alfonsi had been a CBS News correspondent based in New York since July 2004, and was the lead correspondent on many domestic and international stories. Alfonsi covered the school shootings at Virginia Tech and reported for all CBS News broadcasts. In 2006, she reported from the Israel-Lebanon border covering the war with Hezbollah and later, the violence in Gaza. Alfonsi also covered the war in Iraq. Upon her return from Baghdad, she covered Hurricane Katrina and stayed in New Orleans for more than a month reporting on the recovery and rebuilding efforts. Before being promoted to CBS News correspondent, Alfonsi was a freelance correspondent for the CBS Evening News weekend edition, Up to the Minute and CBS Newspath. Alfonsi was also an award-winning reporter and substitute anchor for WBZ-TV, the CBS-owned station in Boston. Prior to that, she was a reporter for KIRO-TV, the CBS affiliate in Seattle, Washington, and was also a general assignment reporter for WVEC-TV in Norfolk, Virginia. She began her career in broadcast journalism at KHBS-TV in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Alfonsi graduated from the University of Mississippi, Oxford, in 1994 with a BS in political science and journalism studies. @sharyn_alfonsi

Sexual harassment is finally being taken seriously, and numerous companies are working to put an end to it. While this massive movement is a welcome shift for women, it is also changing the landscape for many. What are the consequences of this movement? How should it be discussed in the workplace? Are men less willing to mentor women out of fear? Do female entrepreneurs and potential job recruits have less opportunity because men are avoiding engaging with women? Come listen to this panel of experts discuss the ins and outs of a new workplace with a heightened awareness surrounding harassment.

Common wisdom says that successful people attended an elite MBA program, landed high-powered jobs right out of school, and climbed the ladder straight to the top. But the CEO Genome Project shattered these myths. This ten-year study of more than 17,000 C-suite executives revealed some surprising choices that set successful CEOs apart. Join this session to learn the four key behaviors of successful CEOs—and three moves that can catapult your career.
