Summer 2012

HAPPY NEW YEARHAPPY NEW YEARHAPPY NEW YEARHAPPY NEW YEAR

While we are still experiencing a rocky time, our luck has been the gorgeous weather and a most welcome summer holiday break. Viv and I have returned to work well rested and energized, ready to kick off our events calendar for the year with a project for Kidney Health Week. On Monday March 5th we are creating a garden outside the KIC from the patch of weeds which is currently thriving. To be named the “Transplant Garden” it will coincide with the activities coordinated by KHNZ throughout the country focusing on Kidney donation. We will be planting freesias, provided by ODNZ as a thank you from recipients and moving a couple of ex-isting bushes. If you would like to join us with your gardening tools, please call the KIC and add your name to the list of volunteers. At 5.30pm we will provide refreshments and celebrate the gift of life with invited guests. Pot luck lunches will also resume in March. The first on March 30th, features a range of healthy snacks which are easy to make for all the family and designed to suit dialysis patients. Viv and I will make a few of these for the lunch, so no need to bring anything of your own this time. Copies of the recipes will also be available to take away. If your membership is due for renewal on April 1st, you will find a renewal form enclosed with this edition of the Messenger. For those who have overlooked payment for the current or previous years there may also be a reminder notice. It is always appreciated if subscriptions are paid promptly, the income is important for the society’s functioning. If you are in arrears you may wish to pay those when renewing for the coming year. We are grateful to a number of members who have already renewed for 2012/13.

The CKS Transplant Garden Project The CKS Transplant Garden Project The CKS Transplant Garden Project The CKS Transplant Garden Project ---- March 5thMarch 5thMarch 5thMarch 5th Kidney Health Week 2012. 4th – 10th March,

This is the garden space outside the office of The Christchurch Kidney

Society, KIC and KHNZ. As you can see there is plenty of room for

improvement.

Combining with KHNZ to celebrate, inform and share the benefits of kidney

donation and transplantation, we are creating the CKS Transplant Garden. If

you are interested in helping please phone or email the KIC (Ph 3795529,

Email [email protected]), let us know your contact details so we can keep in

touch.

ODNZ and KHNZ have offered transplant recipients a pack containing a

printed tee shirt, with the words “Thank You”, in 8 different languages,

cards of the same design, along with a packet of freesia bulbs (generously

donated by Oderings). The idea is for the recipients to plant the bulbs in

their community. The local media will be contacted so they can attend the

planting. Some recipients may choose to join us and plant their bulbs in our

garden and all local recipients who have expressed

and interest will be invited to do so as part of the

project. We anticipate that the space will need a full af-

ternoons work beginning at 1.00pm. At 5.30pm we will

have a short celebration upstairs in our offices with

drinks and nibbles.

For most people with kidney failure, a kidney transplant is the best treatment. When compared to people on dialysis, kidney transplant patients live longer, have a better survival quality of life and are cheaper to treat in the long run. The demand for donor organs exceeds supply in most (probably all) countries. While New Zealand has a relatively high rate of live kidney transplantation, as a proportion of all transplants done, the deceased donation rate is low. In 2010 there were 50 transplants from deceased donors and 60 from living donors. At any time the waiting list for a transplant is 300 to 500 people.

Quite a lot has already been done to encourage and support kidney donation:

• New Zealand has a well organised national system for transplantation incorporating Organ Donation NZ (based in Auckland) and the three transplant units in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

• Organ Donation NZ provides training for the hospital (ICU) staff that care for the families of potential deceased donors.

• A number of other agencies work to educate the community on the benefits of kidney transplantation.

• The excellent work of transplant co-ordinators and transplant teams has resulted in an increased number of living kidney donations, including non-directed donation from strangers, paired exchange transplants and ABO incompatible transplants.

Page 3 The Renal Messenger Summer 2012

• We recognize the loss of income and extra expenses incurred by many living organ donors and have a system for the reimbursement of these expenses. While we think we can improve this system we need to compare what we have with the complete absence of such a system in Australia.

• As the result of an initiative by Organ Donation NZ it is possible, in some cases, for kidneys from deceased people to be donated after

“heart” rather than “brain” death as is normally the case.

• The National Renal Advisory Board, DHBs and the Ministry of Health have worked hard to improve inefficiencies in the health system that delay living donor assessments and surgery and to ensure fair and adequate national funding for kidney transplants.

With organ donation being the theme for World Kidney Day 2012 we have an excellent opportunity for community debate on the important issues around organ donation. During Kidney Week we hope that New Zealanders will think about organ donation and discuss it with their families and friends, workmates, fellow members of social groups, churches, schools etc. Some of the important questions that I hope will be discussed are:

1. How do we make sure everyone knows about the benefits of transplantation and the relatively small risk of organ donation?

2. What are the best ways to increase organ donation rates in New Zealand?

3. Are we happy with the current situation where the final decision regarding deceased organ donation rests with the immediate family of the potential donor? (In some countries everyone is considered a potential organ donor unless they explicitly indicate during life that they do not wish to be.)

4. How do we think we can best reconcile the conflicts that sometimes arise between the wish to do good i.e. increase donor rates and the wish to avoid harm i.e., respect for different cultural values and spiritual beliefs in our community?

5. How can we best remove non-medical barriers to transplantation e.g. insufficient knowledge of the benefits, out of date ideas about who can donate, too few health resources etc?

Page 4 The Renal Messenger Summer 2012

6. How far is the community prepared to go in remunerating living organ donors for expenses, loss of earning, and pain and discomfort?

To find out what Kidney Health NZ has planned for Kidney Week please see the article that Carmel Gregan-Ford, Education Manager, has written for CKS.

Kidney Health Week 4th – 10th March 2012, incorporating World Kidney Day,

Thursday 8th March.

With this year’s theme Donate Kidneys for Life Receive, we have decided to

use this to focus on the benefits of transplantation. It is hoped the media will

find this a newsworthy topic and we will get plenty of coverage nationally.

This year we are working with Organ Donation New Zealand to promote the

week.

A pack containing printed tee shirts, with the word Thank you, in 8 different

languages, together with cards, with the same design, will be given to

transplant recipients, along with a packet of freesia bulbs (generously

donated by Oderings). The idea is for the recipients to plant the bulbs in their

community on March 8th, it could be their local community centre, school,

library etc. The local media will be contacted so they can attend the planting,

take a photos and talk about why you are giving something back to the

community.

The Governor General has kindly agreed to host an afternoon tea on Tuesday

20th March (he is unavailable during Kidney health week) at Government

House in Wellington to recognise the contribution of live donors. He will

present the donors with a certificate of recognition.

In Auckland the Mayor Len Brown will host a similar function on Thursday 8th

March and in Christchurch, the local Kidney Society together with KHNZ are

inviting donors and recipients’ to join them in planting Freesia bulbs in their

“Transplant garden” outside their office in Antigua street on Monday 5th

March followed by an informal celebration

We will go to Parliament for our annual visit, to screen staff and MPs for

kidney disease, and to talk about transplantation on Tuesday 6th March

We have lots of stories from recipients talking about their experiences and some donors who are happy to share their stories too. Experience tells us the media like these types of stories, so we are hoping to get better publicity

this year which will be an opportunity to raise awareness about kidney

disease in a roundabout way. Support groups will be sent Posters and the

media release, which they can use as they wish.

We have a contact within Maori television that is keen to work with us to

raise awareness and talk about some of the issues regarding Maori attitudes

to donation and transplantation, so hope to have something more to

announce regarding that soon.

Hello to all Renal Messenger Renal Messenger Renal Messenger Renal Messenger readers!!

Here we are again, a new year, with hope and potential for most, cautiously

motivating us in a forward direction. For some, this means standing tall and

challenging the status quo, insurers, council or a number of other

earthquake related difficulties which seem common these days. For others

this means sitting quietly waiting. Waiting for new energy to rise within, or

waiting for the right moment to act. Where ever you sit in the spectrum of

action or non action, what we are all sharing, in and around Christchurch, is

a new NORMALNORMALNORMALNORMAL. What has become clear is that nature does not know about

Christmas eves or New Years. Nature does not follow the human calendar.

So, where does that leave us? I guess that means we have to adjust to

nature, adjust to its changeability and the unpredictable character of its

physical expression on the land we live.

I go back, now, to earlier articles I have included in the Phone Booth.

Specifically I mean previous writings about changechangechangechange. At the end of the day, we

cannot control nature. Most of us, to some degree, have the need to have

some control over, and in, our own lives. When we lose our sense of control

our inner and outer worlds can turn upside down and we can be left feeling

scared and unsafe. So the question we then need to ask of ourselves is

“what can I do to help myself regain a sense of inner stability?”“what can I do to help myself regain a sense of inner stability?”“what can I do to help myself regain a sense of inner stability?”“what can I do to help myself regain a sense of inner stability?” Why is it that

people respond to situations differently? Of course part of this is due to our

natural personality traits, our temperament and disposition. Some of these

‘survival tools’ are built in or have been established, and then reaffirmed,

throughout our entire lives. Much of it is down to our own personal

experiences of life that have shaped us, and the learnt behaviours and

coping mechanisms we have developed (or not developed) in response to

them. This is of course a very individual and complex package to unwrap,

Page 11 The Renal Messenger Summer 2012

and also embraces other aspects such as societies views, culture etc.

Perhaps though, we each have the ability to help ourselves regardless of

these things; simply by adjusting the way we think about things nownownownow.

Thinking impacts our emotions and therefore our inner stability!

Whether it is earthquakes or health changes greatly impacting on your life or

of someone you love. I invite each one of youI invite each one of youI invite each one of youI invite each one of you to ask yourself right now “What “What “What “What

change can I make in my thinking that will have a positive effect on my change can I make in my thinking that will have a positive effect on my change can I make in my thinking that will have a positive effect on my change can I make in my thinking that will have a positive effect on my

experience.”experience.”experience.”experience.” Try a couple...write them on a piece of paper and then follow it

through to see what new outcome that change may lead to. Whether it be

thinking about practical aspects of living such as what you are eating or how

much you are drinking. Or perhaps it could be your resistance to attending

your health appointments. It could be small changes in your thinking that

will influence your emotional response to natural events. TRY SOMETHING TRY SOMETHING TRY SOMETHING TRY SOMETHING

TAKE SOME CONTROL BACK IN YOUR LIFE!TAKE SOME CONTROL BACK IN YOUR LIFE!TAKE SOME CONTROL BACK IN YOUR LIFE!TAKE SOME CONTROL BACK IN YOUR LIFE! Think about how each change

you decide to make may impact your life. Write it down and follow that

change through on paper, step by step, to see where that change will take

you. If you like what you see put it up on the fridge, on your mirror or

anywhere where you are likely to see it every day. Give yourself permission to

try something new and to gain a different perspective on life. Put it into

ACTION ACTION ACTION ACTION most importantly!!

Good luck!! Please feel free to contact me if you need some guidance on

how to implement some changes in your life. I am more than happy to assist
