Office Space! The Uffizi's life began 1560
when Cosimo I de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany commissioned Giorgio Vasari to create a palace specifically to house the offices of the Medici family .
The Uffizi gallery was finished in 1581, under Granduke Francisco de’ Medici, son of Cosimo I.
It was constructed next to the Medici Palace.
The space was originally intended for offices (Uffizi means office) and to host meetings for various city and world officials.

However, the Medici had so many works produced. The Uffizi became one of the first modern museums.
Granduke Francesco I, made it Europe's first modern museum when he opened it to visitors on request.
In 1765 it laid another milestone by becoming the first gallery to open its doors to the general public.

Uffizi – Private Hallway of the Medici
As well as their paintings, the Medici's possessions included part of the grand-ducal collection of statues, jewelery, medals, weapons and scientific instruments, all of which remain on display today.
Various family members, along with the building's architect, are immortalized on the walls of the Vasarian Corridor, which was constructed in 1564 to connect the Pitti Palace with the "offices".
The corridor's niche is self-portraits of the art masters of the world.

What do these quotes from The Prince, say about Niccolo Machiavelli’s view about being a leader? It is better to be feared than loved, if you cannot be
both. It is double pleasure to deceive the deceiver. It is much more secure to be feared than to be
loved. Hatred is gained as much by good works as by evil. He who wishes to be obeyed must know how to
command.
