Resident Spotlight: Don and Marta S. Don and Marta S. are one of the many wonderful couples living at Renaissance Village Rancho Belago. Marta was born in Nebraska and lived in a small farming community until she was 11 years old. Her family moved to Manhattan

Beach, California, which was an exciting experience for her. Back in Nebraska, they didn’t even have indoor plumbing, so California was a whole new world. She and her younger brother were very close growing up and enjoyed spending time together. Before Marta met Don, she was married to another man. They had four children, two boys, Steve and Jeff, and two girls, Debbie and Laura. Unfortunately, Debbie, their oldest daughter passed away a few months ago due to cancer. Marta enjoys being a mother and found it was something that’s built into you. Don’s parents and two older brothers made the move

out to California after struggling through the Dust Bowl in South Dakota. After losing his crops two years in a row, his father decided it was time for a change. Don was born

soon after they came to Culver City. Don has a passion for cooking, one he developed early on while watching his mother cook. His first job was at Sinbad’s restaurant on the Santa Monica Pier. He was later hired by a chef that taught him everything he knows. He worked at several country clubs in Southern California, which gave him the opportunity to serve stars like Andy Thomas and Frank Sinatra. Don was drafted as Private First Class into the U.S. Army and served as a cook for the officers. He went to Fort Ord for basic training and was then sent with four others in his company to a school for cooking. He spent

two years, three months and five days in the military. He was only supposed to serve two years, but his time was extended because of the raising of the Berlin Wall. Don and Marta met in a singles’ group at their church. On Sundays, after church, he would take Marta and her four children to lunch. The two dated for some time before tying the knot. Don was supportive of Marta and her children, and he was every woman’s dream: he could cook. Marta’s work schedule kept her out later than Don, so he prepared dinner before she got home. Marta worked in offices like the Air Force facility in El Segundo, TRW, and several other aerospace facilities. Don also taught classes of young chefs at LA Tradetech College. He and Marta also had the opportunity to go to Washington, D.C. and privately tour the White House during President Ronald Reagan’s Administration, after he wrote a letter to the White House Chef, Henry Haller. Don and Marta have been married for 44 years and have ten grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and another two great grandchildren on the way. Their family lives all over the world and they’re proud of all their accomplishments. One of their granddaughters serves as a pilot on an Apache Helicopter for the U.S. Army in Afghanistan. Don and Marta enjoy socializing and getting to know the other residents that live at Renaissance Village. They like to participate in the different activities offered because it’s the best way to get to know others and make friends. Marta shares that living here is much like you are on vacation every day.

Employee of the Month:Ronelle Robinson

Ronelle enjoys getting to talk with residents after each meal.

Ronelle Robinson is one of the talented cooks that works in the kitchen at Renaissance Village Rancho Belago. Ronelle holds her Associate of Science in Baking & Pastry from the Art Institute. She became interested in cooking when she was younger, she did a lot of the cooking growing up. Raising three children has also given her plenty of practice in preparing meals for her family. She has two boys, Taaj and Kamron, and one girl, Tajanna. Ronelle has a myriad of experience inside and out of the kitchen, she served in the Army for two years as a Private Second Class. She held positions as a Light Vehicle Mechanic and an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). She also worked in cooking and baking at group homes for boys. Ronelle has a big heart and views food as the way to a person’s heart and soul, and enjoys making people feel good with the food she creates. Ronelle loves everything about working at Renaissance Village Rancho Belago. The kitchen offers more of a fun and laidback atmosphere in comparison to the fast pace environment of her previous kitchen at ProAbition. She enjoys coming out to the Dining Room after each meal to talk with the residents, which allows her to get to know their likes and dislikes. Ronelle has a strong sense of respect for residents and she understands the importance of listening and connecting with them.

When Ronelle is not working, she enjoys playing softball. During the week, she plays in a softball league and on the weekends, she plays in tournaments. Ronelle owns her own baking business, Ladybug’s Delectable Treats & Catering, where she specializes in cakes, pastries, and Creole and Cajun food. Ronelle, we appreciate your reliability, hard work and motivation in serving our residents. Congratulations on Employee of the Month.

RenaissanceA Poem by Alex V.

Fall Prevention and Geri-Fit Francesca Fisher is the founder and creator of Geri-Fit, an evidence-based strength training program designed for older adults of all ages and fitness levels. She began her body-sculpting program in Ohio in 1984. At the time, strength training was up and

coming, but many women did not want to get “big, bulky muscles” from lifting dumbbells. When a study came out in 1986 stating strength training was great for creating dense bones that combat osteoporosis, many flocked to begin the body-sculpting program, which was offered at over 200 locations in nine county areas, and became the most popular program in north eastern Ohio. Geri-Fit was born as an answer to seniors desiring the benefits of strength training because they noticed their own unsteadiness and the loss of being able to walk from Point A to Point B. Geri-Fit aids seniors in regaining their strength, which also improves balance, mobility and ultimately decreases their risk of a fall. Geri-Fit empowers and enables seniors to walk with confidence and should they fall, get back up with ease. The Geri-Fit program consists of a 12-minute pre-stretch warm up, consisting of marching in place, movement from side to side and raising arms at shoulder height. This is followed by 30 minutes of strength training, which includes squats, lunges, overhead press, and more. These exercises work all major parts of the body, but the primary focus of the program is to work the lower half of the body and build up as much muscle as possible. Geri-Fit is not just a program, it’s a lifestyle change, one that seniors should continue participating in to live a long and healthy life. Regular exercise, like Geri-Fit, helps combat arthritis, osteoarthritis, depression and shows great benefit in slowing down the progression in Alzheimer’s and dementia. In regaining their strength, some seniors have moved from walker to cane.

Geri-Fit has been offered through the city of Menifee for the last five years, at Renaissance Village Rancho Belago for the last two years, and Renaissance Village Murrieta is in its first year of the program. Geri-Fit is currently offered in parts of the United States, Canada, Mexico and is broadcasted on TV in Brazil. Francesca shared that she envisions Geri-Fit being offered nationally by 2020 in the U.S. and additional countries. Geri-Fit applied for international trademark and is working on translating the manual into Cantonese, Mandarin and Spanish. Geri-Fit is doing great things for seniors around the world, and is an active leader in fall prevention. We are proud partners of this exceptional program, and offer classes twice a week at both of our assisted living communities.
