Instrument Families
-Instruments were classified into families similiar to today's groups
-Winds-Strings-Percussion
-Instruments came in different sizes, which produce different sounds
Wind Instruments
The wind instruments are very similiar to today.
Some used mouthpieces, like brass instruments.
Others used reeds, like woodwinds.
Cornett
-The cornett had a mouthpiece like a trumpet, but used fingers like a recorder
Cornett
-The cornett came in different sizes and shapes, and made different noises
The tenor cornett is called a Lizard and the bass cornett is a Serpent
Recorder
-The recorder is the same as the one you use today.
-The bigger the recorder, the lower the sound.
Shawm
-The shawm is the ancestor of the oboe and bassoon.
-It used two reeds, just like today's instruments.
Sackbut
-The sackbut is an ancestor to the modern trombone.
Percussion
-There were many types of percussion instruments
-The most common is the drum
