Welcome Letter From the Principal

On behalf of the staff at Kellond Elementary School, I am happy to welcome you to the 2020-2021 school year! It is my privilege and honor to welcome you to the Kellond Elementary School and community. As principal, I am looking forward to an exciting year of learning and growing with our children and working with our professional staff, parents and community members. Understanding Student Schedules

Use these definitions to help understand your child’s schedule. Students will receive a

personalized class schedule from their teacher. As the year progresses, the schedule may need

to be modified or updated to meet the needs of the students. These schedules will include OMA

lessons and Counseling lessons.

Morning Meeting- This is time for the class to come together and set the agenda for the day,

build a classroom community, share a story, and problem solve if needed.

Zoom Synchronous Instruction – Live teacher directed lessons.

Asynchronous task – Student independent work that can be completed online or offline,

depending on the task.

Break- A 15-minute stretch, restroom, handwashing break.

Intervention- A daily 30-minute intervention program (K-3 Waterford; 4-5 IXL) that utilizes

technology to challenge and supports individual progress.

Small group intervention- Small groups of 3-5 students during any asynchronous task time in

which students may work live with teachers.

English Language Learner Instruction- Students receiving additional instruction as an ELL take

place during the time designated by the ELL teacher.

Individual Education Plans- General education students who receive services to support IEP

goals will be scheduled during times coordinated between the service provider and general

education teacher. These services may include: resource instruction, speech and language

support, occupational therapy, and counseling services.

Parent Communication- Teachers will be setting up a brief (10 minute) weekly individual

meeting with each family to check in and discuss weekly progress. Please communicate with

your child’s teacher how you would like this meeting to occur- by Zoom, phone, email, or text.

Clever – Getting Started

Microsoft Office 365 – Getting Started

Every TUSD student has an Office 365 account that has been set up for them. They can access

their account by going to portal.office.com, clicking Sign in (top right), and then doing the

following:

1. Enter < [email protected] > (without the < >) in the spot where it says "Email, Phone,

Skype." Students' matric number is their student ID number.

2. Upon entering this information, you will be taken to the TUSD sign in page. Your student's

username will be the same [email protected] they used at the log-in screen, and their

password is the same password they log in with at school.

Students have to make sure they include the "s." after @ in the username:

[email protected].

Learning Spaces For families who choose a learning space, when schools are permitting to provide on-campus learning options, students will be placed in a space of no more than 15 students. Students will be assigned a socially distanced desk and chair. Students are required to wear a mask and observe physical distancing. The space will have a proctor to assist logging in, headsets for audio, and connecting to school Wi-Fi. Students will follow the same schedule as the students learning remotely from home. On-site students will be assigned one restroom to use and remain in the same space all day.

• Students will pick up their breakfast as they enter school and report directly to their assigned seat. Lunch will be delivered to them in their assigned space.

• Students will be given 15 minutes of lunch recess in a grassy area. Playgrounds are closed.

• Students will be given stretch breaks in between their instructional sessions. • Students will engage in the same online instruction as students learning at home. • Students are encouraged to bring a full water bottle daily as water fountains on site

have been shut off due to Covid-19. • Students will follow these procedures for entering and exiting the campus:

• Students may only be dropped off by vehicles curbside in the large parking lot. Two gates will be opened for quicker entrance. The gates will be supervised by school monitors to ensure students enter campus with face masks and adults do not enter campus. Gates will

be locked at 9:15am. Students are only permitted to enter one gate daily and exit same gate daily

• Monitors and staff will be supervising the process, monitoring for masks and social distancing.

• Students being picked up during the day: parent/guardian rings exterior doorbell at main entrance. Office staff will come to and assist you.

• Visitors are not permitted in the building without an appointment. Appointments will be made for issues that cannot be addressed by phone or Zoom.

• Masks required by all visitors, staff, and students. • Students in our self-contained program will be dismissed through the choral, either

picked up by parents or escorted to the bus bay. • Bus students will be sent to the garden to wait to be called by bus number is called

by a staff member in the bay and then sent through the choral to the bus bay by a monitor.

• Parent pick up students may only be picked up by vehicles curbside in the large parking lot. Two gates will be opened for quicker exit. The gates will be supervised by school monitors to ensure student safety with moving vehicles.

Student Expectations

Attendance Students are expected to sign into Zoom meetings assigned by their teacher. Students’ sign in/log in is used to take attendance electronically. Students are to complete their asynchronous tasks and intervention as assigned and participate in all lessons. Grading

• Teachers will adhere to district grading policy. • Two entries in the gradebook per week per subject. • Attendance captured through Zoom synchronous attendance • Online platform minutes (online platform data of assignments/quizzes completed and

logins), office hour and small group attendance, minutes captured and attested to by the parent/guardian.

Online etiquette with teachers and classmates

• Online expectations are the same as in person: respectful communication, raise of hand option in Zoom, equity of voice (allow all voices to be heard), and contribution to discussion.

• If your teacher feels as though you are not following expectations, they will let you know and have the option to put you in the “waiting room” for a brief time to refocus.

• Code of Conduct expectations and consequences are the same. • During online Zoom instruction student cameras are to remain on and students must be

visible. • Students are always expected to follow dress code. • Direct zoom lessons and the equivalent of in person instruction and should not be

interrupted. If Parents/Guardians have questions, concerns, or need clarification regarding online instruction please email the teacher and they will get back to you once instruction has completed.

TUSD Code of Conduct and Discipline The 2020-2021 Code of Conduct (COC) has not changed from the 2019-20 school year. Please click on the link below to see the pdf version of the COC. Paper versions of the COC will be available on a limited basis at school sites. Below the link, there are clarifications of specific behaviors that are related to Covid-19 and CDC guidelines. COVID-19 Related Expectations Students are to follow all expectations as stated in the TUSD Code of Conduct, including but not limited to: • Respecting social distancing norms and guidelines while on campus.

o keeping hands to selves and not touching other’s body or masks. o Intentionally removing own or other’s masks may be classified as violations:

recklessness, minor aggressive act, or endangerment. • Wearing a mask at all required times while on campus.

o Failure to comply will result in progressive disciplinary action. (1st, 2nd, 3rd offenses)

• Violations may be classified as defiance and non-compliance or other applicable offense. • Respecting teacher’s expectations for classroom ZOOM etiquette and rules.

o Violations may be classified as disruption, defiance and disrespect, or other applicable offense.

Zoom Teachers will conduct their teaching over Zoom for the time being. Students are expected to log into Zoom each day for their learning sessions. Logging into Zoom multiple times a day is the expectation and will be used to take attendance. Students and families must be mindful of Zoom calls. Microphones often pick up on background noise and conversations, and cameras catch background activity. Please consider those things while students are on calls in order to prevent distractions and maintain the privacy of your homes. Appropriate Use of Technology Technology (laptop, phones, tablet, etc.), whether provided by district or provided from home, is expected to be used with respect for all those around you. Please use good judgement when accessing learning sites and interacting with teachers and peers. Please refer to the code of conduct (see link provided) for more information on misuse of technology. Consequences Consequences are aligned with the Code of Conduct. Teachers will give reminders of expectations, but if negative behavior persists, progressive discipline/consequences will be imposed.

Attendance Procedures

Remote Learning Attendance Procedures states that teachers must take attendance during

synchronous learning time during Zoom calls in the morning and afternoon. However, teachers

can change the attendance up to five days later if:

a. TC—Teacher Check-in Based on teacher documenting check-in with student through

Synergy TeacherVUE

b. SW—Submitted Work Based on assignments that teacher records in TeacherVUE

Gradebook

c. PT— Parent Tracking of Learning Time Based on minutes that Parent enters though Synergy

ParentVUE and finalizes for submission at the end of each week

d. SM—Software Minutes Based on minutes that student uses instructional software, e.g.

Waterford, IXL, etc.

If students are not present during synchronous learning time, expect for students to be marked

absent. Students and families need to communicate with their teachers regarding any work

that may be completed outside of our traditional learning hours.

If students will be absent from learning for the course of an entire school day due to an illness,

appointment, or other family reason, please notify the attendance clerk by calling 520-584-

5100 or emailing [email protected].

Breakfast and Lunch

Applications for Free or Reduced Lunch are available at https://mealapp.tusd1.org. Children

who qualify for free lunch also qualify for free breakfast.

Children may buy a lunch or bring a sack lunch. Lunch, including 1/2 pint of milk, is $2.30. Milk

alone may be bought for $ 0.30. Lunches may be paid for by going

to https://mypaymentsplus.com/. Reduced lunch is $ 0.40 daily.

Grab-N-Go meal service will be provided by the district. For more information about this service

Bullying

Bullying may occur when a child or group of children engage in any form of on-going behavior that includes such acts as intimidation and/or harassment that:

• has the effect of physically harming a student, damaging a student's property, or placing a student in reasonable fear of harm or damage to property;

• is sufficiently severe, persistent or pervasive that the action, behavior, or threat creates an intimidating, threatening, or abusive environment in the form of physical or emotional harm;

• occurs when there is a real or perceived imbalance of power or strength; or

• may constitute a violation of law. From the TUSD Code of Conduct, bullying is explained as, “Intimidating students by the real or threatened infliction of repeated physical, verbal, written, electronically transmitted, or emotional abuse, or through attacks on the property of another. It may include, but not be limited to actions such as verbal taunts, name-calling and put-downs, including ethnically based or sex or gender-based verbal put-downs, and extortion of money or possessions. Bullying can be:

• physical in form (e.g., pushing, hitting, kicking, spitting, stealing);

• verbal (e.g., making threats, taunting, teasing, name-calling);

• non-verbal/ cyber-bullying (e.g., text messages, email, social networking-such as, but not limited to “Twitter”);

• psychological (e.g., social exclusion, spreading rumors, manipulating social relationships).” Any child who feels he or she has been the victim of bullying or suspects other children of being bullied should file a complaint with the principal, the principal's designee, or other school employee.  The child's report may be provided verbally or in writing.  A child's verbal report will be documented in writing by the employee receiving the report. Knowingly submitting a false report of bullying shall subject the student to discipline.

Family Involvement Kellond is grateful for its supportive families. Family members are actively involved in our school in a variety of ways. Some of the many ways include:

• Classroom volunteers Family members are also encouraged to attend special gatherings and workshops including:

• Open House and conferences

• Parent meetings, classes, and workshops

• Family engagement nights Families are a welcome and appreciated part of our community; after all, you are your child’s first and most important teacher. It is by working together in a partnership, both at school and at home, that we can provide the best education for each child.

Homework Policy

Recognizing that the education of children is a cooperative effort between the home and the school, the TUSD Governing Board values the assignment of homework as an integral part of the learning process. At Kellond, we have developed the following expectations and guidelines:

• The type and amount of homework will be appropriate to students' grade level and general level of ability.

• Assignments will be specific and have clearly understood expectations.

• Homework assignments will be generally used to introduce, reinforce or expand what is taught in the classroom.

• A goal of the assignments is to encourage students to develop study habits and responsibility for assigned work.

ParentVue

ParentVue is the TUSD portal that allows parents/guardians to register children, review grade book and attendance information, update records, communicate with staff, and more. All registration materials and medical information must be updated through ParentVue. To initially access or create an account, you must obtain an activation code from front office staff. Parents who have an existing account for one child already have an account for all their children. Please contact our office staff for assistance, and computers/tablets are available to use in the office.

Please keep the school informed of any changes in address, phone number, parent's employment and guardianship through ParentVue. If you plan to move during the year, please let the school know in advance so withdrawal notices can be prepared. To request a copy of written cumulative records, please provide a written notice for the records that you are requesting with a picture ID. Records will be available within 10 days.

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports

Kellond follows a school-wide positive behavior program called PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports). Our PBIS expectations are: be safe, responsible, kind, and Cougar ready. A matrix of expectations is included in this handbook.  If you have any further questions about this national, researched based program, please feel free to call the school.

Administration Principal: Brenda Meneguin M.Ed., NBCT, [email protected] The school administration is tasked with running a safe and organized remote learning environment including: • Monitoring academics and behavior of all students. • Addressing behavior and academic concerns when they arise. • Analyzing test scores, student grades, and participation. • Monitoring campus and all learning environments – physical and virtual. • Providing restorative practices to students and staff. • Ongoing training to staff on best practices in learning Dean of Students/MTSS Rachel Maleski, [email protected] The Dean of Students addresses behavioral or academic concerns using restorative practices. Additionally, the Dean assists students, families, and teachers to ensure that all students are successful in the school environment. The MTSS lead monitors student academic progress and achievement, class assessments and grades, teacher input, and other data. When a student demonstrates difficulty, the MTSS lead works with a team to identify student needs, develop an intervention plan, and monitor and adjust the plan’s implementation.
