Remote control of locks
WagnerT/MilbradtT20.04.23 S2
In the past: lock control on siteNow: Lock control via remote control
Usually four locks (chambers) can be controlled by one control center
Up to seven videocameras transfer the picturesAll locks need a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) The longest distance between lock and control center is
currently up to 100 kmAt daytime 1 person controls 2 chambersAt night 1 person controls up to 4 chambersThe aim: reduce personal

• Each remote controlled lock is associated with one operator station
• If an operator station should fail (emergency) it can be switched to another operator station
• If the energy supply should fail an emergency operation (about 1 hour under full load) is still possible
• If the transmission paths should fail, local operation is still possible
• All operating controls which are needed for the procedure of the lock process, are available at every operator station
• Every dangerous area is monitored by a permanently assigned camera / monitor

Dangerous areas which require special attention are:
• Lower and upper outer harbor
• Lower and upper gate, if applicable middle gate
• Lower and upper sub-chamber
• Main route to the lock
These areas have to be monitored each with an extra camera

• The recording is done by video cameras which are fixed at stationary 12m or 18m high masts
• The cameras are equipped with zoom lens and pan-tilt heads
• If a camera should fail, further operation is still ensured by panning the next camera
• The display on the operator station is done on single screens in the flow direction of the river. This is the same view which also the shift supervisor has when working on-site

Besides dangerous areas the following information is transferred• All information of the Programmable Logic Controller (state of control with status and error messages)• All control commands• Entry and exit signals• All communication• Waterway gauge• Other hydrological data (e.g. water temperature)
