Energy Systems
Stirling’s energy systems engineers provide advanced simulation and analysis for extreme environments. Our expansion into energy systems has already led to the successfully development and deployment of prototype systems into two industry sectors.
Photobioreactor LED system
• Control software and hardware
• Prototype 2013, full scale demo 2015
• Full ILS solution
Condition monitoring system AWEAR©
• Tracks and alarms for preventative
maintenance
• Demonstrator 2014, roll-out 2015
Our involvement in REMO
We became involved in REMO because of our capability, desire to enter market and experience of engaging primes (end users)
Stirling role on the project
• SME Project Director
• Technical direction
• Commercialisation and exploitation
H2020 ‘REMO 2’ SMEi application
• Submitted Dec 2014
• Decision Mar 2015
• Potential 2 year project KO June 2015
• Smaller consortium to REMO 2
Objective of this session…
……is to:
• Demonstrate the technology developed under REMO 1 FP7 project (currently TRL 6)
• Get feedback from tidal industry on:
• Work to date
• Backing to progress REMO 2 and feed in requirements
• How best to engage with industry – nature of collaboration
• I will follow up individually with you
Thank you for your time!

Project Overview
Project Background
Research on the application of magnetostrictive materials for,
(1) cure monitoring and control for composite repairs;
(2) the structural health monitoring of composite structures.
Part-funded by InnovateUK in collaboration with Stirling Dynamics, The Welding Institute and three other UK partners (www.inheatpro.eu).
A 3-year project from 2014 to 2017.
2014-15 discussions with the UK composites community to direct the research for the greatest overall benefit
2015-16 technology research at The Welding Institute
2016-17 prototype development & test
2017 demonstration and dissemination

Materials and Processes Test Services
Date: 29th January 2015
Introduction
• Stirling Dynamics have been supporting the Materials and Processes (M&P) engineering domain of Airbus since 2009.
• Provide technical support to the following sub-domains of M&P:
Failure Analysis & Metal Technology
Assembly Technology
Composite Technology
Mechanical Testing
Surface Technology
Failure Analysis & Metal Technology • In-service failure analysis using a variety of fractographic and
metallographic techniques • Root Cause Analysis • Dimensional verification / conformance to manufacturing drawing • Production of detailed technical reports often viewed by airlines,
authorities, etc.
• Fractography by use of Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) Locate point / region of crack initiation Establish failure mode across fracture surface, i.e. Fatigue, trans-
granular / inter-granular, static overload, etc. Use of striation counting to establish approximate onset of fatigue
cracking
Failure Analysis & Metal Technology
• Metallographic Assessment Review of grain structure and grain flow in region of interest Micro-examination of surface for corrosion damage (pitting, inter-
granular attack, etc.) Energy Dispersive X-Ray (EDX) / X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF)
techniques used to establish qualitative material composition
Assembly Technology
• Assembly Technology Laboratory based activities including sectioning and inspection of
fastening systems Test specimen assembly / preparation Post test inspection with staged disassembly Detailed drilling inspection
Composite Technology
• Composite Technology Macro & microscopic investigation Stacking sequence / layup verification Thermal analysis of composite materials - Differential Scanning
Calorimetry (DSC) and Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA)
Mechanical Testing
• Mechanical Testing Mechanical testing of composite and metallic specimens to
internationally recognised standards Project management of large test programmes Coupon, test fixture and instrumentation design Test Definition creation
Surface Technology
• Surface Technology Assessment / measure of surface treatment / coatings (paint,
anodising, dry film lubricant, sealants, etc.) Fuel & hydraulic oil conditioning of test specimens Development and testing of prototype devices in support of
Airbus R&D projects Corrosion investigation Bio-fuel test research
Skills and Experience • A multitude of skills & experience within the team
Collective Metallurgy experience of 55+ years Expert knowledge of aerospace aluminium alloys, forgings,
fasteners and joining techniques
Facilities
• Stirling have the capability to perform full analysis of samples utilising the equipment of several university facilities across the UK. Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM) complete with qualitative
and quantitative element identification Sample preparation equipment Mechanical test facilities
