THE REMINGTON MODEL 788 is a highpower rifle with an extremely strong act-ion. The full length stock has a form fittingpistol grip. The receiver is fitted with remov-able plug screws for receiver sights and tele-scope mounts. The bolt can be removed easilyfor take-down.

SIGHT ADJUSTMENT - Factory sights onRemington high power rifles are targeted at100 yards and carefully adjusted at factoryfor average shooters. If your rifle does notappear to shoot accurately it does not nec-essarily mean that sights are improperly aligned.

Individual differences in eyesight or method ofshooting may require sight realignment. Beforeattempting to re-align sights it should berealized that the greater the group size themore difficult it becomes to determine whererifle is shooting (center of impact). A con-sistent method of holding rifle, aiming andsqueezing trigger will aid in obtaining a smallgroup size. Different sight settings are required

for each cartridge type, bullet type and weight, barrel length, each range and wind conditionand, most likely, each individual shooter. Totest rifle for accuracy place large target in safearea at desired range. (Before testing at alonger range it is advisable to fire a few roundsat 50 yards. At this range, bullets will generallyhit somewhere on target). Shoot from a prone

or sitting position giving body and elbows solidsupport. Fire four or five shots per group, using ammunition with which you plan tohunt. Shoot carefully and deliberately. Ifgroups are at desired point, sights are correctlyadjusted, if not, you should adjust sights. Ifshots are too high, loosen elevation screw andlower rear sight. If shots are too low, rear sightshould be raised. If rifle shoots left, rear sight(Fig. 3) should be moved right. Should rifle

shoot to right, move rear sight to left. (Turnwindage screw to loosen sight leaf). Alwaysmove rear sight in direction you want rifle toshoot. Information about trajectory or ball-istics of your favorite load may be found inthe Remington Firearms and AmmunitionCatalog. CLEANING AND CARE - Caution: Beforecleaning make sure rifle contains no live ammu-nition. To make cleaning of barrel and bolteasier, bolt should be removed from rifle. Toclean barrel use lightly oiled, soft cloth andclean from breech to muzzle. Scrub barrel boreand cartridge chamber with a good bore sol.vent, if necessary. Wipe dry and re.oil bore andchamber very lightly. Brush face of bolt to re-move shooting residue. Wipe dry and re-oilvery lightly. Additional care and cleaning ofbolt parts can be done, if necessary.

ACTION CARE AND DISASSEMBLYRemove stock and bolt if necessary to cleanaction or replace parts. Unscrew and removefront and rear guard screws. Trigger guard may

then be removed by pivoting downward untilit pulls free of floor plate. Lift stock away fromaction and barrel. Clean bolt and action insolvent and wipe clean. Reverse procedure toreassemble.

TO DISASSEMBLE BOLT PARTS - Boltassembly may be cleaned and oiled as a unit.Should disassembly be required, proceed asfollows: With bolt cocked (handle down),insert pin (close fitting through holes in bothsides of bolt plug (Fig. 2). Lift handle and re-move bolt from rifle. Unscrew and removebolt plug-firing pin assembly. To reassemble, screw assembly into bolt until firing pin headcontacts rear of bolt. Back off (counter-clock-wise) until firing pin head snaps into detent onrear edge of bolt. Replace bolt into rifle. Withhandle down, remove pin from bolt plug.

LUBRICATION - Your Remington Model 788will remain clean longer if little or no oil isused on parts of action. Lubricate cam surfaceson bolt to prevent wear. Wash action and boltparts with a good grade of petroleum solvent, dry and re-oil very lightly. After handling, wipe barrel, receiver and all steel parts to pre-vent rusting. Invisible "prints" of moisture cancause rust unless removed. After using in wetweather dry and wipe steel parts with oilto prevent rusting. Abrupt changes in temper-ature can cause condensation and wetness. Therefore, special care is needed to interiorsteel parts to prevent rust. When shooting infreezing weather, remove excess oil for bestresults. Use dry graphite if necessary to lub-ricate metal parts.

MAINTENANCE - Rifle should be checkedperiodically by a competent gunsmith to ensureproper inspection and any necessary replace-

ment of worn or damaged parts.

IMPORTANT - Remington firearms are de-signed, manufactUred and proof tested to stand-ards based on factory loaded ammunition.Improperly loaded handloads can be dangerous.Remington Arms Company, Inc. cannot assumeresponsibility for damages or injury caused byhandloads or reloaded ammunition.

This gun has been manufactured to Remingtonspecifications and shipped from the factorysuitable for use. Remington does not recom.mend and is not responsible for any alter-ation or modification to the gun not made byRemington factory personnel, nor the re-placement of worn or damaged parts with thosenot of Remington manufacture.
