Dear Parents/Guardians, School Photos

We had perfect weather for our school photos yesterday. Almost everyone was excited to have their photo taken. I

noticed a lot more product in the children’s hair, although I was unable to join in for the eigth year in a row!

We anticipate that the photos will be sent to our school early next term. If you forgot to place an order, you can still

do this online by going to www.leadingimage.com.au. To place an order online you will need the special school

‘shoot key’. We have this information if you have misplaced your original photo day flyer. Orders can also be

placed at any time, however you may be required to pay for your photos to be posted directly to your house if an

order isn’t made soon. The postage cost is approximately $10.

Please contact the office if you have any questions.

National Assessment Program — Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)

This year NAPLAN will be conducted between May 14th-24th. The assessment program tests Years 3 and 5 students

in reading, persuasive or narrative writing, grammar and punctuation, numeracy and spelling. This year sees the

transition to an online format for students. Students were involved in a School Readiness Test (SRT) today to test

the school’s online capabilities and systems.

First meeting of the 2019 SCHOOL COUNCIL

The first meeting of our new school council took place on Monday of this week, where we welcomed the newly

elected team. Newly elected members in the parent category include Brian Anderson and Kate Edwards. They

joined Nicola Dunnicliff-Wells (returning), and current members, Ronnie Lowe, Jessica Herdman, Kim Ross and

HISTORY AWARD Rory B – 5/6 Daenke: Thankyou for showing high interest and engagement in our excursion last week Rory. It was

great to see you make connections with your prior learning to Dja Dja Wurrung culture and history and writing so

well about it in your reflection in class. Well done and I hope you continue to enjoy Indigenous Studies!

of the Student Representative Council members and staff. Parents (and family members) are most welcome to

attend. Seating will be available for adults who attend the service. Morning tea will be provided after the service in

the staff room.

2019 Student Leaders

We congratulate the many SGPS kids who recently nominated for a leadership position at Spring Gully. We were

Gully we actively promote leadership qualities in every student, highlighting everyday opportunities for these to

shine through.

RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS

Emotional Literacy in Prep Pesina

This week in Respectful Relationships we have been learning about Emotional Literacy. This term we

have participated in lots of activities that have built our emotional awareness and vocabulary. Our

activity this week was our final task in the Emotional Literacy topic and focused on drawing all of the

emotions we feel and see in others. We discussed how to recognise the kinds of things that can cause

certain emotions in us, our friends and family.

Fresh Spring Gully Eggs.

Our school chickens have been working hard laying eggs. They get regular visits from many

students at recess and lunch time and it is a highlight of the day for some students to visit, feed

and help look after our school chooks. To raise money to pay for the chook feed, we need to sell

the eggs the chooks lay. Please keep an eye out for our egg stall before assembly on a Friday

afternoon. We sell our Free Range eggs for just $2 for a half dozen. Remember: Spring Gully

School Eggs; the Smart Choice!

Indigenous Studies News

Last Wednesday Year 5/6 Indigenous Studies students participated in an excursion to the bushland across the road

from our school to enhance their knowledge of local Dja Dja Wurrung culture and history. We were joined by Kerri

Douglas and Simon Penrose, Koori Education Support Officers from the Department of Education and Indigenous

Elders. Students were able to engage in hands-on activities, learn about bush tucker and bush medicine, view

traditional artefacts and weapons and listen to stories and information about Indigenous culture whilst making

valuable connections to their prior learning. Students enjoyed working in nature and I was very proud of the way

they showed respect to our guest speakers. I would like to thank 5/6 teaching and specialist staff for their flexibility

and support on the day. A big thankyou to Kerri and Simon for their time, effort and enthusiasm when teaching the

students and for conducting a very special Smoking Ceremony to conclude the day.

Emma Orr - Indigenous Studies teacher Last Wednesday Mrs Orr took us down to the creek across the road from our school to meet Kerri and Simon. Kerri

and Simon were Koori Education Officers and they taught us about Indigenous Dja Dja Wurrung and Yorta Yorta

clan culture. Simon took us near the trees to show us how, when and what sap can be eaten from trees as lollies or

chewing gum. Kerri showed us weapons such as boomerangs and a bundi. Simon showed us how to carve a

coolamon and big canoe from a tree with a sharpened stone. He explained scar trees to us. We talked about Dja Dja

Wurrung totems - eagles, bats and crows which we had been learning about in class. Simon made rope from a

stringy bark tree and told us a story about how clans would use this circular rope to catch fish that flew into the air

from traps! The stringy bark tree could also cut into legs to help snake bites and it could be put in water to mend

wounds. Sap could be used as a glue to help wounds and different leaves could be scrunched up and boiled to put

on cuts and sores. Eucalyptus leaves could be used to help colds and coughs.

Simon showed us a specially shaped log that he was going to make a boomerang from. Kerri showed us a parasite

tree that was growing into a Eucalyptus tree and that when the berries were red we could eat them. Simon showed

us how indigenous people would climb a tree using rope and how to catch a possum. They talked about didgeridoos

and how to make them. Simon explained how bark could be dyed to make different colours and then they could be

used to make baskets, rope, huts and bowls. Bark could also be used for protection and armour. Simon talked about

cultural stories from his clan including the rainbow serpent and Kerri taught us some new indigenous words. We

learned about trading of food and how important Country is to Aboriginal people. After lunch we had a Smoking

Ceremony. Simon and Kerri explained the importance of the Ceremony and then asked any students who wanted to

participate to come up and bathe themselves in smoke. There were three parts to the ceremony. The parasitic Balah

tree burned first to get rid of evil spirits. The second burning was wattle leaves to thank the Country and say

thankyou for natural resources and the third burning was Eucalyptus leaves to say thank you to family and

community.

Thank you to Mrs Orr for organising this excursion for us. It was fun because we could leave the classroom and

work in a natural environment and we were really happy to learn more about Indigenous Studies. We would love to

do this excursion again and continue to learn more indigenous culture and stories at our school.

Active Travel News Wow! What a fabulous turnout for National Ride2School Day last Friday! It was great to see so many families

walking, riding and scooting together along the bike path – not to mention less traffic around the school.

Across the school, two in three students travelled actively, while a number of classes had more than three quarters –

the most active class was 3/4 Crawford, where 79% or the class rode, walked or scooted. Awesome effort! Well

done to everyone who gave it a go and to the parents who made it happen.

Next Wednesday is our last WoW Wednesday for the term. On Friday, the active travel trophy will go to the class

with the most regular active travellers across the term.

Save time with the Stanley Stroll

Do you arrive early to school in the afternoon to find a car park? Did you know it takes just 10 minutes to walk to

school from Stanley Avenue? Why not park there and enjoy a relaxing stroll – savour some me-time or walk with a

friend. Walking back with the kids is special catch up time – if they’re not running ahead with their friends! Trust

me, it is so much nicer than battling traffic, and it means fewer cars around the school, which is better for everyone.

Parent Club News

Easter We are kindly asking for prize donations for our annual Easter Raffle. We have had lots of donations so far, but

please keep them coming. A small Easter egg, or anything you think would make a great prize: colouring books,

craft items or other would be greatly appreciated. We have a collection box in the staff room for donations, or feel

free to leave them at the office. The more donations we have, the more prizes to be won, so we thank you greatly

for your generosity.

There are more raffle tickets available from the office, if you have awesomely sold all of yours already.

Woolworths Earn and Learn We will be participating in Woolworths Earn and Learn Program again this year. This entails collecting stickers

when you shop at Woolworths, with those stickers being redeemable by the school for amazing resources like

sports equipment.

This promotion kicks off on the 1st May, so information will be sent home at the start of Term 2.

Next Parents Club Committee Meeting Our next meeting is on Friday the 29th of March at 2pm- in the staff room. Everyone welcome, the more the merrier.

Repeat Notices Easter Hat Parade, Easter Raffle and Tickets

Parent Club will once again run the Easter Egg Raffle in conjunction with the Easter Hat Parade on the last day of

Term 1. This is a whole school event and parents, grandparents, friends, aunties, uncles etc are most welcome to

attend. We would love some donations of Easter goodies to make up lots of great prizes. Donations can be left in

the collection box in the staffroom at anytime. We suggest that parents do not go to too much expense with the hats.

Usually the “best” hats are the ones that children have made themselves with some assistance from parents or older

siblings. Raffle books should have been sent home & extra books are available at the office. Tickets are $1.00 each.

This event is always lots of fun and a great fundraiser for the school.

2020 Enrolments

In managing new enrolments, the school is required to adhere to state-wide enrolment placement policy and

processes, whereby eligible students have a right to be placed in their designated neighbourhood school.

The designated neighbourhood school is defined as the school that is nearest to the student’s permanent residential

address, measured in a straight line from the residence.

Students living outside the designated neighbourhood may still apply for enrolment, with remaining places to be

allocated in the following order:

1. Students for whom the school is the designated neighbourhood school.

2. Students with a sibling at the same permanent address who are attending the school at the same time.

3. All other students in order of closeness of their home to the school.

4. In exceptional circumstances, upon compassionate grounds.

Enrolment packs will be available at the beginning of next term.

School Cross County

Our School Cross Country will be held on FRIDAY, 3rd of May at the Spring Gully Recreational Reserve (based at

the Soccer Fields).

All students from Prep to Grade 6 will be competing to the best of their ability. Prep to Grade 2 students will

compete in their grade level, whilst students from Grade 3 to 6 will compete in their age level. Ribbons and House

points will be awarded to all students who complete the course. I encourage the children to wear comfortable

clothing (preferably House colours) and appropriate footwear.

A spectator area near the finish line will be made available on the bank of the soccer field (school side) for those

who wish to attend.

I will need some parent helpers to assist on checkpoints around the course – please let me know if you are available

to do this.

Schedule of events:

12:50pm – 8 to 12 years (grades 3 to 6) walk down to soccer oval.
