The final piece of land that was for sale at the boom of the school fields has now been completed. The school stands to gain 50% of the proceeds of this sale. However, it is important for the community to understand that there are very ght boundaries about the use of this money. Because the income is generated from property it must be used for the same purpose. Some may say immediately, why not the library? As a Board we actually believe the library should be funded from the normal 5-year property funding given to all schools. Monies gained through the sale of land is an extra and therefore we would like to see it spent on improving our learning environments. The last sum we obtained was used for the refurbishment of E block, along with the carpeng of stairwells in both E and F blocks. It is our plan to connue this work into the corridors of these two blocks as well as some refurbishment in D block. Workday/Sport Expo A couple of weeks ago I had the privilege witnessing the Sports Expo and 1000k Challenge. This was a wonderful whole school event, where everyone involved was having a great me and giving things a go. The event is one of our main school fundraisers and without this we would need to be liſting our school fees which we wish to avoid at all costs. Students have sought sponsorship for this event as well as the Senior Workday. Some students have been very good in geng their money in, but there are sll a number who have not returned the cards and money. Could you please follow this up for us? A very big thank you also to all those who sponsored students for the 1000k Challenge and Workday; we very much appreciate your connued support. Saying Sorry The apology is a show of strength. It is an act of honesty because we admit we did wrong; an act of generosity, because it restores the self-concept of those we offended. It offers hope for a renewed relaonship and possibly even a strengthened one. The apology is an act of commitment because it consigns us to working at the relaonship and at our self-development. Finally, the apology is an act of courage because it subjects us to the emoonal distress of shame and the risk of humiliaon, rejecon and retaliaon at the hands of the person we offended. All dimensions of the apology require strength of character, including the convicon that, while we expose vulnerable parts of ourselves, we are sll good people. In some ways it has been a bit of a messy term with so many interruptions getting in the way of routine teaching and learning. Students have responded very well and tend to cope with these changes better than the adults. The second of the two cycle trips headed away as I write this newsletter into what could be a couple of damp cooler days. No doubt they will still have a great time and get to see some of the beautiful autumn colours in Central Otago. This week we received plans for the refurbishment of the school library which unfortunately has turned into one of those leaky buildings. The school will close at 12.05pmBuses will leave at 12.10pm.This is in order that staff may visit

From the Board ChairThe Board is settling into 2018 with the main items on the agenda having been the approval of the Annual Plan and Analysis of Variance. Both of these documents are required to be submitted to the Ministry of Education in early March. The meeting of this tight timeframe requires a substantial amount of work by all involved, in particular Mrs Potter, who is tasked with pulling the data together. The first item on the Board agenda for the new calendar is the election of the Board Chair and Deputy Chair. I am honoured to have been nominated to lead the Board through until the 2019 Elections. I am also delighted to be supported by Mrs Gail Arthur who has been re-elected to the Deputy Chair position. The start of the year is also dominated by the task of finalising the annual budget. At this time the Operations Grant is confirmed, which is based on the March Roll Return, and the majority of other income streams are finalised. At Wednesday’s meeting next week, the Finance Committee Chair will present the draft budget to the Board for final approval. I thank all involved in this incredibly complex task that requires the maximising of expenditure to maximise student achievement while maintaining prudent fiscal responsibility. After an extremely busy start to 2018, I’m sure everyone is looking forward to a few days R&R over Easter. Take care and enjoy this break.Mark Rogers, Board Chair

Words from the LibraryBook of the Week - ‘Parris - Young Queen’ by Parris GoebelIn this inspiring memoir, Parris Goebel shares the extraordinary story of how she went from high-school dropout to award-winning dancer, choreographer and video director. She has worked with many of the stars of the music world. Parris shows how, with hard work, determination and talent young people can achieve their goals. Speed Dating BooksRecently 8Sm tried out something new at the library - speed dating books! Several students were looking to expand their reading but didn’t know where to begin. Mrs Downes arranged a selection of books on placemats and I asked students to sit by a placement and they were given five minutes to read any part of the book. We rotated three times around. This was a huge success with nearly half the class issuing books from this activity. Thanks to Mrs Downes.

School Kit Writing ChallengeBoth 7Br and 8Sm have spent the last two weeks completing the School Kit Writing Challenge along with another 3000 classrooms. We wrote metaphor poems about ourselves which we put one line of onto postcards which joined up to make a poem. These postcards along with a completed poster about our classes will be sent to a school in Cambridge. We will receive one each from a classroom which we don’t know yet. A highlight for 8Sm was trying to do some of the activities on the poster like licking your elbow or deciding on six words we liked the sound of, and finally sharing the metaphor poems.

AED Defibrillator DonationWe would like to thank the Lion Foundation, through Mr Brian Tegg, for their most kind donation of an AED. An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a type of life saving equipment used to treat sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). The AED will be placed in the main office and its whereabouts will be signalled through the AED App for members of the public who might need to use it. Our office staff and some teachers have been trained in the use of this device.

Just a small black hole in our Solar System would throw planets out of orbit and tear our sun into pieces. Year 13 Geography at KaritaneThe Year 13 Geography class went to Karitane last Monday. It was a lovely day and the students enjoyed walking along Karitane beach looking at the geographic landforms that this dynamic coastal environment has created.

We stopped at the huge volcanic basalt outcrops of rock for a photo opportunity before having lunch and venturing up to the Huriawa Pa site. There, students learned about coastal erosion and the effects on landforms such as the ‘Mother and Child’ stacks. There was enough time for the annual Geo 300 Karitane fieldtrip photo!

Brathwaite Centre NewsStudent of the Week: Tyler Thomson - Making great progress in his mainstream computing class.Sadly the weather was too wet for the Special Olympics School Athletics on Wednesday and for the first time ever it was cancelled for 2018. However, we made the best of the situation and played balloon volleyball, Blind Man’s Bluff, musical chairs and a mini Centre talent quest at the Centre. There was lots of creative singing and dancingIn the afternoon, the Special Olympics Lower New Zealand School Coordinator led a session for Sport Otago at the Edgar Centre. We had a lot of fun with the giant parachute, noughts and crosses, and balloon chase and races. For art this week we made arty things out of small cardboard boxes. It was great to see how students applied their imaginations to their models.

Rugby League 9’s TournamentLast Friday some of our Junior College students participated in a Rugby League 9’s tournament at Bishopscourt. Many tries were scored in cold, windy conditions. The team had a great day out learning the craft of Rugby League. Dylan McKenzie was the back of the day, Jaxon Oto-Rowe was the forward of the day and Seth Osborne was the most improved player.

The Riccarton Sports’ Exchange went well with all students representing the school admirably. With Riccarton’s roll now reaching 1100 they are a considerably bigger school than ours, but we still managed to come away with a couple of wins. Our Girls’ Tennis and Boys’ Athletics won their events. The Touch was very close with our mixed team just losing in a drop off, 6-5. The Girls’ Touch team lost by 1 try, 2-1. Despite being on the losing end of some of the sports, the whole exchange is a wonderful social event which for many students is a highlight of their school sporting career.
