Yaama Welcome to our new families, it is great to see new faces in our school. We hope your children achieve everything they dream for in their time at our school.

NAPLAN results should by now be in your home. These test results are the efforts of your children on the one day of the test. Our school does not teach the test, it is not a part of our curriculum offering, we do however endeavour to expose children to the type of questions that are regularly used to prepare our students for the unknown. Many students find NAPLAN extremely stressful and this does impact on their outcomes. Other students appear to be quite stress free in the testing environment and their results reflect this confidence. Please remember that our school reports and data shared with you all go together with NAPLAN to paint a full picture of your child’s progress.

I have attached to the newsletter the following link to the Tell Them From Me parent and community survey. This survey is used by the school to ascertain the perceptions, thoughts and advice of wider parent community. It is an important element in our endeavours to ensure the school is meeting community expectations. Please go to the web address and complete the 10 minute survey. All feedback to the school is collated data with no link to names of people completing the survey. https://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/berinba2016 Students in years 4-6 will also be completing their second survey in the next week. All teaching staff will be completing their version of the Tell Them From Me survey in the next fortnight also. This collected data will help drive the schools evaluation and planning for 2017.

The school had a visit from Pru Goward, our local State Member of Parliament on Monday. Our school captains welcomed Ms Goward to the school and visits to 5/6S and 1H followed a working lunch. Ms Goward was very impressed with our students, the very busy nature of the school and the size and condition of the physical property of the school.

I wanted to take the time to congratulate the staff of Berinba Public School. The amount of time they give freely to out of school training opportunities is quite extraordinary. L3, How2Learn, Writing in the Middle Years, Bridges out of Poverty, TOWN are just a few of the courses your teachers are working on to build their skill sets. These courses are proving invaluable as we work towards improved outcomes in all areas of our children’s schooling. For most of us as we travel through life we can remember a teacher who made a difference for us. LIBRARY NEWS This week, Year 3 to 6 students were very excited to see our new library books. These books include Ahn Do’s Weirdo Series, Tim Cahill’s Tiny Timmy and many of David Walliams books. Berinba students have been learning how to use our new library system ‘Oliver’. Students can access Oliver via their personal portal at home and school. By using the new system, students and parents can access their library history. This way students will know what books they have borrowed and need to return. Students can also search for books and see the new books that have been added to our library.

VIRTUAL EXCURSION Both Year 5/6 classes participated in an Andy Griffiths virtual excursion. The virtual excursion entails using the school video conferencing equipment to listen to an author talk with the opportunity for questions and answer time. Andy Griffiths is the author of the Treehouse series, Just Crazy series and many more books. Andy gave the students a brief insight into the writing. He explained his thought process when writing a story and his use of props to gain an idea and elaborating on them. He also encouraged making a storyline that an audience is not expecting. Students and teachers enjoyed the Andy Griffiths presentation. We are hoping to participate in more virtual excursions in the future.

BOOK PARADE I am currently organising a street parade planned for Term 4, Week 1. This will involve walking down the street in our book character costumes to show community members, reading books in the park and promoting the use of our local library with a tour by Michelle, our local librarian. I am very excited and will provide you with more information towards the end of term. The most important thing at this stage is ‘planning the costume’. If students need ideas, tell them to visit the library at second half lunch and have a talk with me. Hayley Bradley (Librarian)
