TRANSCRIPT
Remembrance Day is a memorial day observed by Australians and other members of the Commonwealth since the end of the First World War in order to remember all those who fought and died in the line of duty to keep us free. Every year on November 11, we pause in a moment of silence to honour and remember those who have served, and continue to serve Australia during times of war, conflict, and peace. If we do not remember, their sacrifice is meaningless.
I encourage you all to participate in the services around our
State, especially to take your children and grandchildren to the services so they may get the chance to understand what our service men and women went through to make our country a beautiful country to live in.
As in previous years the Greensborough RSL Sub-Branch will be conducting a Remembrance Day service at the Greensborough War Memorial Park commencing at 10.45am on the 11th November 2019.

Roger Greene’s association with veterans commenced in 1965 following graduation from the Royal Military College, Duntroon.
He was posted to the Royal Australian Corps of Signals, Watsonia Barracks (now known as Simpson Barracks). As a single officer he lived in at the Barracks and developed a close relationship with several older officers who had served in the Second World War. One in particular was Major Fred Anderson MBE who was the Officer Commanding the Barracks. Many of the older officers were members of Melbourne Legacy and he became aware of the unique difficulties often facing returned servicemen and women and their families.
After he returned from postings to Vietnam and the UK in 1972, he resumed contact with his older veteran friends. Many of those veterans were now into their 70s or early 80s and expressing concern as to who would look after their widows after they passed away. Roger promised one such veteran he would replace him in Melbourne Legacy once he retired from the military; and so, in 1986 he joined Melbourne Legacy.
In the late 80s and 90s he became increasingly aware of ‘younger’ Vietnam veterans and their families experiencing all kinds of problems arising out of their service. He had been a member of the RSL since returning from Vietnam and recognized the need for ‘younger’ veterans to become involved in supporting fellow veterans (many were increasingly suffering physical and mental health problems) lead to him becoming more active in the local (Greensborough) RSL and the Diamond Valley Vietnam Veterans sub-branch (DViets).
Roger became involved in the Training and Information program founded by fellow Vietnam veterans John Printz OAM and John Methven OAM and a few others. It was immediately apparent the need to provide training for those assisting veterans and their families to give them a voice with compensation claims, for disabilities resulting from their service, to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs and also the provision of wellbeing support to families. The TIP program morphed into the Advocacy Training and Development Program in 2016.
Today, Roger continues to provide wellbeing and compensation support to veterans and their families through the Greensborough RSL, the DViets and Melbourne Legacy, as well as assisting as a trainer and assessor in the national Advocacy Training and Development Program of which he is the National Chair of the Capability Framework Management Group responsible for Military Advocacy training Australia wide.
Congratulations Roger W Greene OAM JP for your service to veterans and families.

Caring for our Legacy WidowsLegacy had its origins in the Great War of 1914-18 in Gallipoli, Palestine, France and Flanders and was founded in 1923 in Hobart. Legacy found its real purpose in 1925 after it was suggested at a meeting in Anzac House, Melbourne that Legacy should look into caring for the children of deceased servicemen, a legacy still continuing today. It currently cares for around 52,000 beneficiaries, with 82% (over 76 years of age) of them being elderly widow/ers, throughout Australia. These are mainly the ageing and infirm widows of Australia’s Second World War, Korea and Vietnam veterans.
Greensborough RSL provides a monthly luncheon for its group and whilst numbers on some occasions are down with sickness or holidays, all look forward to meeting up with their friends.
These wonderful ladies all have a story to tell of both sad and happy times.
Olive (Robbie) came to Australia as a ‘ten pound pom’ with her husband, George, at the end of WWII. George served in the British Army and consequently joined the Australian Army serving in Borneo and Vietnam. Following his retirement from the Army, George took up taxi driving and they were happily married for 60 years. Robbie has been with the Greensborough group for about eight years.
Joan Billings (and mother of 11 children) originally worked for Legacy but joined the group in 2004. Her late husband, WO1 Kevin Billings, was a life time member of the Montmorency RSL and recipient of an OAM.
Beryl Hammett has been part of Legacy since she was 12 years old (Junior Legatee) after her father (POW) was killed when the ship he was on, sunk. Her late husband, Jack, served in New Guinea. Beryl is currently the Social Secretary organising social outings and guest speakers for the ladies.
Noela McGregor is the current President and her late husband, Robert, served in the Ordnance Corps in Singapore and Vietnam. Noela commented it can be difficult attracting the younger widows to the group as in her words ‘we’re probably too old and society is changing’.
Norma Gale is a ‘newbie’ with four years membership of the group. Her late husband (Leonard) was in the Navy serving in Port Moresby during WWII.
Julia Ewert stated she thought she didn’t need Legacy at first but has been part of it for 25 years. Her late husband, Lloyd, also served in the Navy between 1939-1944.
Lastly, Muriel Jones, has been with Legacy for 22 years and her late husband, Frank, also served in Papua/New Guinea during WWII.
Our ladies have a combined age of 581 or thereabouts and all stated the same thing – we come to Legacy for the company, social activities, friendship, supporting each other, most no longer drive and without giving too much away, a couple of ladies have never had a licence and one gave up driving when she was 87.
