REMEMBERING OUR COMPASSIONATE PATRON, ARCHBISHOP JAMES GLEESON

Issue 10 / Friday 15 April 2016

The GlobeNewsletter of Gleeson College

In a beautiful celebration, Gleeson

College was well represented by

students and staff at the annual Memorial Mass for Archbishop

James Gleeson, Archbishop Andrew Killian and Bishop

Philip Kennedy, held in the newly renovated St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral

last Wednesday 6 April.

The GC Liturgy Choir, conducted byMrs Carly Meakin, sounded wonderful

and were given special mention from all those attending, including Archbishop

Wilson, Vicar General Fr Philip Marshall and the Gleeson family. It was fantastic

to see our Student Leaders and staff involved in readings and processions,

and it was particularly lovely catching up with the Gleeson family, and in particular

Ray Gleeson, Archbishop Gleeson’s brother. Thank you to all staff, students and parents for their attendance at this

special celebration.

Mr Adam Cibich, APRIM

PERCEPTIVE STUDENT LEADERS PAVING OUR FUTURE!

Student LeadershipOver this term our Student Leaders have been meeting with Mr Baker, Mr Bertram and Leadership Mentors in order to explore some of their ideas for improving College life for their fellow students. We are certainly blessed with some very perceptive Studen Leaders this year!

At the last meeting the students reflected on the term and listed their successes, challenges and future ideas. Modestly, they listed only one success, the ‘Wellbeing Week’, which was fantastic, however let me suggest a couple more successes that have not gone unnoticed. The Leadership Camp was a great success this year, as were both the Swimming and Athletics Carnivals. The Student Leaders have had active roles to play in assemblies and

liturgies and they presented very well at these events. At Open Night, the Leaders acted as tour guides, leaving most of our visitors amazed at their professionalism and knowledge of Gleeson College. The Leaders were also involved in the College master planning process and offered the architects some great insights. In addition to these highlights, our Student Leaders have been exemplary in their conduct around the College and have worked hard to achieve great academic results. They really have led by example!

At Gleeson College, Student Leaders have a one-year tenure commencing at the start of Term 4. They meet every week: with their peers in odd weeks and with their respective House Coordinators in even weeks. The Student Leaders are organised into committees which meet regularly and report back the Leadership group. They demonstrate a great commitment to their roles and are certainly an asset to the College and their fellow students.

Term 1 Comes to a CloseAt our College Assembly this week we celebrated the events of Term 1. It is truly amazing how much we manage to pack into 11 weeks. I would like to thank all the students who have worked hard academically, involved themselves in the special events of the term and who have represented Gleeson at Saturday Morning Sports, Catholic Interschool Athletics Carnivals and academic pursuits e.g. the National Youth Science Forum and other events.

I have had the pleasure of reading through the report data from iScholaris this week and it seems that many students have indeed worked hard and achieved very good results. For the students who have fallen a little short of their best, I hope that they take some time in the holidays to reflect on their efforts and recommence the semester next term eager to improve.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff for their work in supporting the learning of our students and the extra work they have done to make the term a success.

As we begin Term 2 I would like to inform you some staff will be taking leave: Mrs Nancy Mastrogiacomo (maternity) will be replaced by Ms Ashleigh Schofield, Ms Helen Gillen (long service) will be replaced by Ms Tasha Trenorden and Mrs Stephanie Van Rossen (maternity), whose classes will be taken by Mr Richard Milne who we welcome back from teaching in the Northern Territory. We wish them all the very best. In conclusion, I wish every student and all of our community a relaxing break over the impending holidays.

God bless,

Mr J Corbo,Deputy Principal

STEM SOCIETY STUDENTS BECOME ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS FOR A DAY!

The STEM Society consists of 15 Year 8 and 9 students, and two Year 10 mentors, who meet once a week as a curriculum extension activity with Mr Ryall and Mrs Morgante. The aim of these sessions is to challenge student abilities and extend their knowledge in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

On Wednesday 30 March we took this learning experience out of the classroom, travelling to the University of South Australia, Mawson Lakes Campus. Students worked in the field of Electrical Engineering for the day, learning how to solder and then using this new skill to create two projects. The first project was an electronic game simulator which played two games, ‘Penguin Pong’ and ‘Simon Says’. The second was a more complex electronics project which resulted in the construction of an electronic piano with volume control. To do this students were challenged with high-level instructions that required them to identify components such as resistors, capacitors and LEDs, and also ensure that they were in the correct orientation with sufficient soldering to allow the circuit to be complete and therefore operational.

The University Instructors were impressed by our group’s level of problem-solving abilities and the way in which they logically approached the tasks. Students were thoroughly engaged for the duration of the whole workshop, and demonstrated excellent team work assisting other students when they were finished with their own. For many, this was their first experience on a University Campus, and this enabled them an idea of the possible pathways where STEM-based subjects may take them in the future.

This is just the first of many excursion opportunities for our STEM Society students in 2016. We look forward to further activities as the year progresses and thank the University of South Australia, in particular Nathaniel Scherer, for their continued support of our program and the assistance that they provide.

SATURDAY MORNING SPORT WRAP UP: TERM 1 2016

Open Girls Softball 2016

Open & Junior Boys Tennis 2016

Open Boys Badminton 2016

With a mix of experienced players and novices, our Gleeson teams displayed great sportsmanship and persistence as they achieved some excellent results in Saturday Morning Sport in Term 1.

New players were made to feel very welcome by the more seasoned members of our teams, and this continues to encourage growth and development across all our sporting sides.

Six teams represented the College in Term 1 of the Summer Sport Competition - Open Boys Tennis, Open Boys Badminton, Junior Boys Tennis, Open Girls Basketball, Open Girls Softball, Open Girls Volleyball and Junior Girls Basketball. Some of our Open teams had the involvement of Year 8 and 9 students, who played above their age group to ensure that we could field a team in that chosen sport. Whilst it can be daunting for younger students to take on the challenge of playing older and often more experienced players, these teams did it with pride and determination.

Last weekend saw most of the Girls Sports play off in a Finals Series with Gleeson lucky enough to have two teams play off for first place! Well done to our Open Girls Softball team who finished top of their pool, remaining undefeated in the B Competition - what an outstanding achievement! Congratulations also to our Open Girls Volleyball team who were also undefeated but fell just short at the last hurdle, going down 0-3 to a very strong Cabra unit.

The Junior Girls Basketball team coached by Mrs Josephine Williams showed their growth throughout the season as they defeated Marryatville 40-14 in their final match. Our Junior Boys and Open Boys Tennis teams had strong seasons with both sides winning most of their games throughout the season. Both the Open Boys Badminton and Open Girls Basketball teams had some strong competition in their respective pools and at times struggled to find consistent structure, however all players persevered and gave it everything they had week-in, week-out.

YOU ARE WARMLY INVITED TOGLEESON FC FAMILY & SPONSORS DAY 2016

We would like to extend a warm invitation to all members of the Gleeson College community to our Gleeson Football Club Family & Sponsors Day on Saturday 7 May.

Season 2016 officially got underway last Saturday 9 April and after a long and gruelling pre-season, the boys are fired up and ready to give their all in an attempt to bring all three championships home and make the all-important step up to Division 1!

Our club is now entering its 13th season, a journey which has seen the club grow from fielding one side to three sides in season 2016. We show enormous pride in our roots, proudly wearing our maroon kit, the colour which has become synonymous with Gleeson College. The club gets huge satisfaction seeing the progress of the ever expanding group of former students excelling at a professional level. While we may not display the talent of these outstanding individuals, our passion for success and pride for Gleeson is just as strong!

On Saturday 7 May, Gleeson FC play host to Adelaide Cobras at our clubs home ground at Pooraka. The day will be dedicated to our loyal sponsors and extended family members of all involved at Gleeson FC. The club would like to extend the invitation for this day to the Gleeson College wider community.

Further details will be provided in the coming weeks but we hope to see the College represented in every way possible on this day.

We look forward to our ongoing partnership through 2016 and beyond.
