World events • In Nazi Germany the political power of the federal states such as Prussia is sub- stantially abolished by the “Law on the Reconstruction of the Reich” on Jan. 30. • The Great Hakodate Fire kills at least 2,166 people March 20 in southern Hok- kaido, Japan. • London gynaecologist Robert Kenneth Wilson takes a photograph of the Loch Ness Monster on April 21. It was proven in 1994 to be an elaborate hoax. • Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini meet for the first time June 14, at the Venice Biennale. Adolf Hit- ler becomes Führer of Germany, or head of state combined with that of Chancellor, following the death of President Paul von Hindenburg on Aug. 2. • The United States occupation of Haiti ends Aug. 15 as the last Marines depart. • The Long March of the People’s Lib- eration Army of the Communist Party of China begins Oct. 16. U.S. News • The “Flash Gordon” comic strip begins publishing in the United States on Jan. 7. • Frank Capra’s “It Happened One Night,” starring Clark Gable and Claudette Col- bert, is released Feb. 22. It becomes a smash hit and the first of Capra’s great screen classics. It becomes the first film to win all 5 of the major Academy Awards – Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture. Gable and Colbert receive their only Oscars for this film. • The newly refurbished Fenway Park opens April 17 in Boston. Seating capacity was increased and the mound known as Duffy’s Cliff along the left-field wall had been leveled, a scoreboard installed at the base of the wall in its place. The entire park gained its distinctive shade of green at this time, although the left-field wall later to be famously nicknamed the Green Monster would remain covered in adver- tisements until 1947. • The United States Department of Jus- tice offers a $25,000 reward for John Dill- inger on May 15. • A team of police officers, led by Texas Ranger Frank Hamer, ambush bank rob- bers Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow near their hide-out in Black Lake, Louisi- ana, on May 23 killing them both. • President Roosevelt signs the Securities Exchange Act into law June 6, establish- ing the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. • The Disney animated short “The Wise Little Hen” featuring the debut of Donald Duck is released June 9. • The world famous Brookfield Zoo opens July 1 in Brookfield, Illinois. • “Pretty Boy” Floyd is shot and killed by FBI agents Oct. 22 near East Liverpool, Ohio.
