Literacy Activity One - Reading Comprehension

Comprehension Questions

1.) Who publishes Fortnite?

2.) What is the aim of the game?

3.) What is Twitch?

4.) What does Emmett Shear compare watching gamers to

doing?

5.) What do you think the writer of this article thinks of

watching gamers? What makes you think this?

6.) Would you say this article is mostly based on fact or

opinion?

7.) Find three facts from the article which haven’t featured

as answers to the previous questions.

8.) Now find an opinion.

*Challenge Question:

As the title asks, would you spend hours watching someone else

playing video games? Why or why not? Write a paragraph

explaining your opinion.

Would you spend hours watching someone playing video games?

If you have a young person in your house it’s unlikely that you’re unaware of the latest gaming phenomenon – Fortnite. Published by Epic Games with over 125 million players, Fortnite is a single or multi-player survival game set on modern-day Earth. Thanks to a sudden worldwide storm, most of the world’s population has been wiped out and those people remaining face attack from zombie-like creatures. Players work together on missions to collect resources and build fortifications, weapons and traps to defend themselves against the uprising. Whilst the popularity of such a game may not be surprising, what could be considered surprising is the popularity of watching gamers in action via online streaming platforms such as Twitch. Emmett Shear, co-founder of Twitch, compares watching gamers to watching sports stars or chefs on TV: ‘You're enjoying watching someone who's really great at it with some entertainment at the same time.’ Twitch is a free service, but many choose to subscribe to other platforms to watch the top gamers like Ninja, who makes millions streaming his live Fortnite action. ‘The people who make the most money surprisingly aren't necessarily the best gamers, they're often the ones who are most entertaining,’ explains Shear. ‘Ninja is a prime example … very high energy, very entertaining to watch.’ Whether you’re keen to watch or, like me, it sounds about as interesting to you as watching paint dry, it looks as though Fortnite and its live streamers are here to stay. At least until the next gaming phenomenon sweeps the world.

Resource Card One - Yearbook

MY FAVOURITE MEMORY My favourite memory was meeting my buddy ..……….. at the start of Year 6. The first time I met her she was really shy but now she isn’t. We have built a great friendship and I will miss her so much when I leave. I have loved spending time with her this year.

MY PROUDEST MOMENT

My proudest moment was in Year 4 when I took part in the skipping festival. We practiced for so long and the hard work definitely paid off because we got into the finals! I ended up coming 2nd in the run jump out competition out of 9 people. I was so proud and I had a lot of fun. We were also placed 3rd in the whole team routine.

MY MESSAGE TO YEAR 6

My message to Year 6 is, “Have fun, always try your best and never give up.” I hope you all work hard and. do well all through secondary school and in your GCSEs. I will never forget all of my primary friends and teachers and I hope you will all remember be as a funny, caring and loyal friend.

WHAT I'M MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT YEAR

In Year 7 I am looking forward to meeting new people, making new friends and trying things I’ve never tried before. I can't wait to do new subjects like Chemistry and Drama. I feel I would be really good at them both. I would also really like to do dance after school and take part in clubs like Gymnastics.

MY MOST CHALLENGING MOMENT

My most challenging moment was when I was playing in the finals for tag rugby. We were playing against a good team and they had great players. We had to work as a team and with that we had won. This was a challenging competition but we were awarded with gold medals.
