•Ground- and drinking water project is funded by
•Federal Ministry of Health•Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management
www.ages.at 3Claudia Landstetter, 7.9.2010
Aim of the Project
• overview of the distribution of natural radionuclide activity concentration levels in ground water bodies
• identify regions with high activity concentrations • identify regions with activity concentrations
below the lower limit of detection• data can be used for risk assessment within
drinking water analyses
www.ages.at 4Claudia Landstetter, 7.9.2010
Drinking water analyses
• detect natural radionuclides with dose relevant concentrations
• concentrate on regions with high activity concentrations
• establish a risk based monitoring program
- area-wide monitoring every year- measured in a 5 to 10 year period
www.ages.at 5Claudia Landstetter, 7.9.2010
• 2500 measuring points all over austria for themonitoring of gound water bodies
• 463 measuring points• ground water used for drinking water abstraction
and not used for drinking water abstraction

• Council Directive 98/83/EC (1998) on the quality of water intended for human consumption
• Drinking water ordinance BGBl. II Nr. 304/2001• indicator parametric value:
- Tritium 100 Bq/L - Total Indicative Dose (TID) 0.1 mSv/a
www.ages.at 22Claudia Landstetter, 7.9.2010
• Codex Alimentarius Austriacus section B1 • Total dose can be determined by Austrian Standard for
determination and evaluation of the total dose due to radionuclides in drinking water (OE-NORM, ON-S 5251, 2005)
• Total dose: - 226Ra and 228Ra are taken into account - 238U, 234U minor contribution to the effective dose 232Th and 234Th with
low solubility in water- Artificial radionuclides and other natural radionuclides (with the
exception of Tritium, 40K, 222Rn and its progenies) are taken into account if dose-relevant concentrations can be suspected

Conclusion
• regions with higher activity concentrations weredefined
• Just one sample was measured for which the total dose exceeds the total indicative dose of 0.1 mSv/a. But this ground water is not used for drinking water abstraction.
• Fundamental data was obtained to es tablish a more risk based monitoring program for further drinking water analyses
