Relay for Life - a lively success!

On the 1st of June, Oxley High held the first Relay for Life event at school led by the Sports Council, due to the can-

cellation of Tamworth’s Relay for Life event. The Sports Council decided to host our own at school and invited all

students and family members. There were 209 registrations with 20+ dogs on the day.

The day lasted from 10am to 4pm, full of walking and good times. The CAPA council organised an Open Mic with

some very talented performances and music throughout the day. A successful barbeque was run by Mrs Gillan and

her Year 11 Hospitality class. The last hour of the day was designated to a massive colour run.

The event was sponsored by many generous businesses. Tamworth Plasterworks sponsored $2 for every lap for

the individual(s) that walked the most laps on the day, with Bryce Kelly, Mitchell and Andrew McCormack each

walking an astonishing 100 laps. Kennards Hire donated heaters and bean bags and NAB employees, as well as Red

Rooster, each donated over $500 to this cause. Penrose Prime Meats donated meat for the barbeque.

The Sports Council hoped to raise $5000 through its relay and exceeded this total thanks to the incredible gener-

osity of the community. .

The following week our Biggest Morning Tea raised $571, with all baked goods donated by the Sports Council and

CAPA Council students.

The Sports Council raised a massive total of $9300 for the Cancer Council.

Sports Council’s Big Morning Tea

The Oxley Sports Council held a Big Morning Tea on the

14th of June as their final fundraiser for the Cancer Council

for the year. The morning tea followed Oxley’s Relay for

Life event to raise an extra $571 to contribute to the over-

all $9300 raised. Those who were unable to make it to the

Relay for Life were able to contribute through buying

baked goods from the stall as well as donating any money

they were happy to donate. Students and teachers were

able to wear a purple Relay for Life shirt from any year and

purple accessories to support the Sports Council and CAPA

Council for their efforts. More is expected to be raised in

2020 as Oxley prepares for all local schools to take part in

next years Relay for Life.

Carinya and Farrer enjoyed a wonderful dinner together on Tuesday June 4.

Mr Heath Pett delivered an inspirational and insightful speech on his leadership role as Vice-Captain at Oxley

High School and his passion for Relay for Life.

Guest Speaker Jye Segboer gave an inspiring and personal insight into his successful leadership journey in the

Business sector.

Jye is a strong Leader in the Tamworth Community and has served as a chairperson, vice president and a board member in various organisations and committees within NSW and the Tamworth region.

The Open Girl’s Basketball team played Lambton High School in the final 16 in the state at the Tamworth

Sportsdome. The opposition were rumoured to be strong as they had an Australian representative and

some players who played for the Hunter team in the State championships that had been played the week

before. All the girls played a very strong game with all players contributing strongly on both ends of the

floor. In defence, Sami Schuberth excelled on much bigger opponents. The game stayed close all the way

through the first three quarters but Lambton pulled away in the final quarter with their stars having to

lift their game to a higher level to ensure the win. All the girls deserve to be commended for their effort

in all the games this year and for their sportsmanship in all their wins and their final game.

Special Mention goes to Jessica Watt, Holly Schalk and Naomi Monckton, all Year 12 students who have

represented Oxley at Basketball for the last time. Thank you for representing Oxley with distinction dur-

ing your time at the school.

Year 8 Maths excursion

On the 17th May, some Year 8 students, Mrs Robards and a parent helper, Mrs Kristy Barratt set off to Armidale for the annual Year 8 Maths Day held at UNE. We thank Mrs Barratt endlessly, as it would not have been possible to attend without her clearing her busy schedule to help us out!

A fabulous day was had by all! The boys’ team felt superior on the day; however, the girls clearly built a superior tower in the final challenge.

Thank you to Mrs Robards, Mrs Barratt, and the students: Bailey Wills, Matthew Barratt, Brendan Jarrett, Troy McCarthy, Lily Parsons, Phoebe Little, Elizabeth King and Shiyi Wu. Students were all amazing repre-sentatives of Oxley High School on the day.

Girls Futsal

Last month Oxley High took away an under 14’s team and two under 16’s teams to play at Coffs Harbour in the

Northern New South Wales Futsal Championships. The teams consisted of 17 girls with some of the girls playing

in both the 14’s and 16’s. Travelling with them was Mr Pett, coach of 16’s Red and Mr Desmid, coach of under

14’s and 16’s Blue.

In the first round all teams came out strong, with the 14’s team winning against Bishop Druitt College 4-1. 16’s

Blue won 8-1 against Woodenbong Central School and 16’s Red also winning against Bishop Druitt College 5-0.

Second round was a bit tough for our 16’s Blue girls going up against Bellingen High School’s yellow side and los-

ing 3-2, with the under 14’s playing Bellingen High schools under 13’s side and winning 7-0 and our 16’s Red win-

ning 12-1 against Woodenbong Central School.

Round three began with some more tough matches with our 14’s suffering a 2-1 loss to Bellingen High Schools

14’s team. In this round our two under 16’s teams went head to head resulting in 16’s Red winning 9-1.

In the fourth round our under 14’s side went out fighting to redeem themselves after their loss against Bellingen

and they did, winning 5-0 against Woodenbong Central School. This meant the girls were heading into the Semi-

finals in 2nd place. Unfortunately our 16’s Blue side ran into some more trouble losing 5-2 against Bishop Druitt

College, but our 16’s Red held strong against Bellingen High School Blue winning 4-2.

The final round determined our 16’s girls spots in the Semi-finals. 16’s Red came out strong as always winning

their final round 5-1, going into to the Semi-finals 1st and undefeated. 16’s Blue lost 4-0 against Bellingen High

School’s Blue side unfortunately missing out on Semi-finals by one point.

In the Semi-finals both our teams went out strong playing some really close games with both teams moving on to

the finals. 14’s came up against Bellingen’s 14 side in the finals winning 3-1 and our 16’s side also came up

against Bellingen’s Blue side and won 2-1 in a very tight match. This resulted in both our 14’s and 16’s Red teams

taking out the tournament.

Athlete sponsorship: Go girls!

The Sports Council held a pancake day to raise money for four athletes in the school that are travelling

to various different countries during the year. The girls; Emma Allen, Jessica James, Mila Thompson and

Nikeisha Burgess have been selected to travel overseas to pursue their futsal endeavours and establish

friendships during these experiences in the Australian Futsal teams. Jessica James of Year 12 is current-

ly travelling around Italy playing futsal, whilst the rest of the girls will be touring Brazil in August this

year. The Sports Council have donated a total of $150 to each of our athletes to help cover expenses

overseas whilst travelling and playing. The Sports Council wish all the girls the best of luck and hope

that each of them have a brilliant time overseas.

REMINDERS UNIFORM POLICY AND EXPECTATIONS

Oxley High School prides itself on upholding exceptional standards and a positive image both within our school and as members of the wider community. We therefore appreciate the continued support of our parents and carers regarding the wearing of school uniform. Our school uniform policy and a detailed description of the school uniform can be found on the Oxley High School Website: https://oxley-h.schools.nsw.gov.au/about-our-school/what-we-offer/uniform.html Students who are unable to wear the full school uniform on any occasion must provide a note from home to the uniform officer in Macquarie courtyard BEFORE SCHOOL to obtain a Uniform Exemption Pass. Disciplinary action will be enforced for those students out of uniform without written explanation. If families are experiencing any financial difficulties and are unable to meet uniform requirements, we have a Clothing Store in the Canteen. It is open every day for all uniform needs and includes pre-loved uniforms. If you have any further queries or require support, please contact your child’s Year Adviser or Head Teacher Wellbeing as soon as possible.

LEAVING SCHOOL EARLY If a student needs to leave school early then they must bring a signed note from a parent/carer to the Deputy Principal before 9am explaining their reason for leaving early. Please be aware that early leave is not to be used for lunch or for things that can be done outside school. Leave will not be granted without a note or parent contact.

ABSENCE NOTES If your child has been absent from school, you can write a note and include the following information: • your child’s full name and roll class; • the date/s and number of days your child was away; • explain why your child was away; • other information as needed. All absence notes should be given to the Roll Call teacher within 7 days of the absence. The student’s absence is unexplained or unjustified if no notice has been provided by parents/carers within 7 days of the occurrence of the absence OR the absence has been explained by the parent but the reason provided, e.g. shopping trip, birthday, is not accepted by the Principal.

UPDATE YOUR DETAILS Have you moved, got a new email address or changed phone numbers? Please inform the front office of any changes in your living situation so we can contact you if the need arises.

IF YOUR CHILD IS ILL AT SCHOOL Please do not send students to school if they are feeling ill or have uncovered wounds. It will require us to phone you to come and collect your child. If a student presents with an illness or injury during the school day we will contact you. If your child phones you on their mobile to say they are ill advise them to follow school procedures and to go to the Front Office to be assessed, and the school will call you. unable to help them if we are not aware of it.

PEANUT ALLERGIES & AEROSOL CANS

Please be reminded not to bring peanut products

to school as we have some students with severe

peanut allergies. Aerosol cans are banned at

school as they can cause affected students and

staff to have potentially fatal reactions.

LEAVE PASS Your child requires a note from parent/carer to obtain a Leave Pass. Please do not just turn up and ask to take your child out as this takes a long time to find the student to get them out of class. MOBILE PHONES & ELECTRONIC DEVICES Students are required to ensure that all mobile

phones, electronic devices, portable speakers and ear phones are turned off and placed in their bags

Families are currently being invoiced for the $10 Sport Fee. We wish to take this opportunity to remind parents/carers that there is a substantial number of students who have elective fees outstanding from previous years. Could those parents/carers please make arrangements with the school for payment of these fees, as your child can not be signed out of school until all fees are collected. If you are having problems meeting your fees for electives or sport please call at the Front Office to dis-

cuss any options the school may be able to consider.

On display…

Often we have student work and

achievements on display in our

office foyer. Earlier this term we

had photos and ribbons won by our

Cattle Team at the Sydney Royal.

Currently there is some cool stu-

dent artworks on display for people

to admire!

Year 8 Visual Arts students have been exploring the works of Hundertwasser and Howard Arkley. The sculptural forms are made from coat hangers that have been twisted to create an organic shape and form. The forms were then patterned and painted using acrylic paint. The paintings were inspired by Australian artist Howard Arkley and his love of the suburban home. Students used bright colours and stencilled patterns onto their works to resolve them. Collectively, these works are fun, vibrant and colourful and are on display in the foyer of the front office for your enjoyment. - Ms Mcilrick.

CHESS @ Oxley

Term 2 Four students from Oxley attended the Interschool Chess Challenge at Calrossy this month. Other schools present were Quirindi High, St Mary’s Gunnedah, Gunnedah High, Farrer, Calrossy and Manilla Central. Good sportsmanship was evident throughout the day and while wins were limited, all enjoyed the challeng-es and comradery.

Meanwhile, the Oxley Chess Team competing in the regional secondary competition lost against Calrossy last

month but have a chance to vie for a position in the second place round next week against Armidale Second-

ary College.

Students interested in playing chess can meet for friendly competition before school and at lunch in the Li-

Moulding Healthy Minds Workshop

As a continuation of our weekly Nestle healthy eating program, Girls Academy students participated in

a Moulding Healthy Minds Workshop with practicing dieticians Nikki and Sarah. Students built on their

nutritional knowledge, discussed food groups, how much sugars are in snack foods and made some

homemade pizzas, curry & rice and a healthy breakfast.

The girls were also shocked at how much sugar their favourite drinks contained and have resorted back

to drinking water.

Thank you to Nikki and Sarah for your informative and fun workshops.

The Year of Kindness

We live in a time where violence is so prevalent in society. When we turn on the news, we see violence; when

we walk down the street, we see violence; when we are playing and spectating sport, we are confronted by

violence. Often we do not want to be around it, we are afraid of it, but do not know how to stop it. There is a

seemingly simple solution, which requires a cultural shift, to do better and to be better. Studies have shown

that kindness can and will reduce violence, and improve relationships within schools and broader communi-

ties. People, who give to others, in small and in large ways, tend to be happier as a result. Kind people are

often likable to others, which can provide opportunities to develop meaningful relationships and love. Random

acts of kindness have related to a range of benefits, including greater positive emotions, lower negative emo-

tions, greater wellbeing, and higher peer acceptance (popularity).

2019 is the Year of Kindness at Oxley High School, as we want to build on our Year of Conversation (2018) and

improve relationships through kindness and gratitude. So, what is “Kindness” and why should we focus on it?

Simply put, kindness is being nice to others. As we examine kindness further, a number of important dimen-

sions begin to unfold. Kindness is being generous with others, giving your time, money, and talent to support

those who are in need. Kindness is being compassionate, which means to really be there for someone, listen-

ing intently to his or her suffering or just sitting with them and silently supporting them. Such compassion in-

volves a deep concern for the wellbeing of others. Kindness is also being nurturing and caring for others — to

enjoy doing favours for them, to take care of them, and to perform good deeds. When we do things for others,

we release positive hormones into our bloodstream, endorphins, which inhibit us from doing bad, mean, nasty

or hurtful things to each other.

Each “Wellbeing Wednesday” we have morning announcements to guide conversations around kindness.

Families are encouraged to continue these conversations with their children at home. Sharing kindness and

encouraging positive behaviours is key to continually improving our school, and in creating safe and supportive

learning environments.

Some simple ways we can show kindness in our everyday lives are to:

Perform a random act of kindness each day (eg: slowing to allow others in front of you, complimenting a

friend or colleague or buying/giving a treat for your friends and family)

Say kinder and softer words to people when interacting through email, writing letters, talking on phone.

Smile when answering the phone and sound happy to hear from the person on the other end of the

line. (This is particularly important to consider, as we often lose tone or feeling through our interac-

tions on text and social media.)

The Oxley High School community has been so kind and generous in their fundraising efforts this year, for

which we are so grateful. We need to continue to encourage the little things along with the big, the random

acts of kindness and putting care into others in seemingly little ways each day.

IDEA - Drug Ed Presentations On the 20th of May we were fortunate to have Tom Reynolds from Independent Drug Education Aus-tralia (IDEA) come to present year group workshops for our students. Workshops were tailored to suit the age and maturity of each year group. IDEA presentations covered all aspects of Drug Education from prescription and over the counter medications, to alcohol, cannabis and synthetic party drugs. The most important messages taken from the day regardless of year groups, were that no matter what the drug, "never leave a mate unattended" and "always call for help". These messages could one day help to save lives and we are grateful for Tom coming to our school to share his knowledge and advice with our staff and students.

TERM 2 ends on Friday 5th July
