Just a few words to start

Barry and Gail Lord, Founders, Lord Cultural Resources

Lordculture is part of the international network Lord Cultural Resources. Founded in 1981 by Gail and Barry Lord in response to an emerging need for specialized planning services in the museum, cultural and heritage sector, Lord Cultural Resources is now the world's largest cultural professional practice.

The Assignement

ISSUE: •  We are all vulnerable to climate change. •  Curbing climate change requires changes by governments in the economy, that need to

be done in a socially acceptable and economically efficient manner. •  Such changes will only happen when citizens are convinced there is an issue of direct

relevance to them and make this a priority issue for their governments.

UNEP’s Mission Statement : To provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing, and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.

The Assignement What it is not:

•  an exhibition that advocates any specific course of action •  Does not advocate the idea that ‘every action counts’

What it is: an exhibition that explains the policy and market failures around climate change.

FORWARD aims at helping individuals the world over to understand and eventually influence the wider political processes on climate change. Focused on climate change solutions, it will give visitors a chance to interact with the large-scale economic choices we currently face, helping them understand the implications of different courses of action and building confidence in their own power to shape the future, alongside governments and business.

Mission: Climate Earth, Swedish Museum of Natural History How can we know anything about the climate over long periods of time? The exhibition includes fossils, real ice cores from real glaciers, a stalagmite from South Africa, and a cross-section of a nearby tree.

Scien&fic  approach  How do we know climate is changing

SCIENTIFIC APPROACH

The science of climate change

Page 10: Reinventing exhibitions on climate change' at the 2nd Asian children's museum conference, Manila

Break down the complex concept of sustainability into tangible experiences through data sculptures that visualise and contextualize facts and figures, making them easily-understandable and allowing for straightforward comparisons.

Tangible experiences to contextualize facts and figures

Strong experiences

KlimaX, Norsk Teknisk Museum, Oslo The exhibition aims at increasing the knowledge of human induced climate change and promote engagement and action from the visitors. The concept is to give the visitors an unforgettable experience by stimulating all senses.

…we know that climate change is happening, how do we move forward ?

Diverging opinions Different opinions on the solutions:

•  Different issues and solutions depending on the country

•  Adaptation vs. Mitigation •  Who pays?

Who speaks? •  Scientists and experts •  Public authorities •  Economic actors •  Anyone

CLIMAX, Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie, Paris Climate change in unavoidable. Whatever the decisions made in the next few years, our lifestyles will be radically transformed. Climax shows us the consequences of climate policies in 2100 through extreme scenarios: -  If nothing is done to reduce CO2 emissions, our environment will be transformed -  If decisions our made to reduce CO2 emissions, our lifestyles will be changed (transport, habitat, urbanism).

Different scenarios

ANALYZING THE POSSIBLE ACTIONS

URGENCY Some degree of climate change is unavoidable but we need to act now to avert the worst impacts. The benefits of curbing climate change far outweigh the costs of doing so. Failure to act against climate change will reduce the choices available

LONG TERM We have to take future into account and plan our actions in a long-term perspective despite immediate interests.

INTERESTS and TRADE-OFFS

We have to consider various interests in designing a solution to climate change We have to negotiate with each other to find efficient and fair trade-offs

INEQUALITY in VULNERABILTIY

Some countries, livelihoods and social groups will face more serious consequences of climate change. Some have fewer resources to face them.

SOLUTION MIX There is no easy or “right” solution. There is no singal tool to solve the whole problem. We have to develop a mix of tools.

Forward + 50 Rio

Forward + 50 Rio is an urban life size game on climate change and sustainable development that will take place during the Rio+20 conference. Conference goers and Rio citizens will be invited to take part in the development of a virtual city. They will need to take critical decisions to avert the worst consequences of climate. At the end of the summit, the game will fast forward to 50 years later and unveil the projected state of the world they built. The players will be able to evaluate their collective performance in creating a sustainable world.
