reintegration - thesis 2011
DESCRIPTION
PROBLEM STATEMENT: The current model of transitional housing for the homeless population often fails to engage the individual in the resource that is provided. The result is continuous looping through the system, abusing the temporary shelter provided, without stepping on to longer term housing, employment and enhanced lifestyle solutions. THESIS PROPOSAL: To introduce a new intentional community model in Portland for people transitioning from a life of homelessness and addiction to a residential environment. this model emphasizes engagement of participants during the process of: recovery, self care, relational building, community engagement, occupational therapy and individual ownership of place thru building their own dwellings. The required engagement to step through this building process simultaneously perpetuates the recovery process and increases opportunity for attaining long-term housing and employment solutions.TRANSCRIPT

MELISSA FARMER - THESIS 2011
TARGET POPULATION:TRAIN HOPPING & SQUATTER COUNTERCULTURE = ages 18-35
TRAINHOPPERS = communities of people that move from one place to another by train, rather than settling down in one location.SQUATTERS = occupying an abandoned or unoccupied space or building, both residential or commercial, that the squatter does not own, rent or otherwise have permission to use.
WILCOCK’S PSYCHOLOGICAL THEORY:the human need for occupation in relation to maintaining health and survival of the individual:
W1. Provide for immediate bodily needs of sustenance, self-care, shelter, and safety. * shelter *detox * treatment
W2. Develop skills, social structures, and technology aimed at superiority over predators and environment.
*relationship building * community engagement
W3. Exercise and develop personal capabilities enabling the individual to reach his or her full potential
*skill building through design build workshop * employment opportunities * kit of part for moving to long-term housing
THIS IS EXECUTED BY: engaging participants in taking ownership over their own dwelling legally, but they are able to individualize the design to suit their own stylistic preferences.
this is a community of people who often times strives for resistance of social norms. such as cleanliness, structure, govenment, employment, paying taxes, and material possessions.
the squatter
individuals within this counterculture form strong “familial” bonds as they protect eachothers livelihood...despite the fact that overindulgence in use of alcohol and drugs is prevalent.

PROGRAM: Connecting design thinking to design doing, Oregon College of Art and Craft and Pacific Northwest College of Art have collaborated to create a unique MFA Program grounded in hands-on making, entrepreneurial strategies, and social and environmental engagement.
Combining a mentor-based approach with an exceptional visiting artists program, students work one-on-one with nationally and internationally recognized designers, makers, and scholars in a self-directed curriculum that challenges them to bring to life the full strength of their ideas and skills.
Encouraging a cross-disciplinary studio environment in which the workshop is a lab to collaboratively explore design and making processes, the Program welcomes students from a wide range of creative backgrounds to make original work with an applied purpose.
With a curriculum focused on the development of a strong artistic voice, the realization of work for a specific community or client, and entrepreneurism that connects making a living with making a difference, the MFA in Applied Craft and Design is the only graduate program of its kind. BENEFITS: allows students to work with participants ans vice-versa greater educational experience and community buliding realized
