Bill iloore Paces Champ Shamrocks Hitters With 3M

Bill "Poco" Moore, taU, husky first-sacker of the champion Shamrocks, topped his tE'ammates in the. m~ter of batting averages a.gam _this year. He hit safely '28 t1mes m 73 at bat for a .384 mark. It made the fot;rth time in seven seasons that big "Number 4" paced the 'Rocks.

Shamrock Batting Champs 1940 Bill There)) 404 1941 Moore · 342 1942 Moore :376 1943 Jim Breed 381 1944 .Jack Machowsky :4n 1945 Moore 457 1946 Moore :384 Cha~ley Mintzell, outfielder and

part tlme first-baseman was runner-up to Moore this summer with a .3'18 mark. The big lefthander had several "days" on which he ~macked 3 or 4 hits and, discountmg non-league gam<?s, hit for a .37~ average. His big bat struck telling blows in several tilts

. Oddity of the season w~s furmshed by Bill Eckhart early in the season. Every hit he made was a two-bagger! Bill's average ~as a low .193 but he \Vas a better hitter tl.an that. The half dozen dvubles he collected drove in 6 ru~s and he scored 6 times. Bill qmt the team early and did not participate in the stretch drive.

Another clutch hitter was Johnny Newman. Although stroking for .280 the big catcher-handyman led the team in propelling home ~he runs witn 13. Pete ·s.::alise did Important swatting in cruci~.l games throughout. His .286 involv~>d 24 hits, 13 runs sc0red and 11 others batted in.

The biggest surprise of the seasen was the collapse of Bill Zerwick. Hitting well over .400 last year and always a tine hitter, he faltered to an anemic .139! Bill played many games during thE' s~mmer with a cluster of boils or;

.h1s neck that would have forced Idleness much earlier upon a less hardy soul. . During the all-out stretch drivE• m the . second-half, Zerwick poled a very Important home run. Little Johnny Clements also cracked out a super-telling homer. ~lem added a triple and double as stand·· out hits in the drive.

Julie Andrus, fresh from Northern. League successes, was rather futile upon his return to the "land of the Shamrock" until his circuit blast. (like Rudy York's) in the OJ>E;mng round of the HyattsvllJe o;;enes. That was probably the best blow of the year.
