May 2014
European Union
A one-day learning-reflection workshop with the participants of the leadership training was arranged in order to explore changes and challenges they face in their daily life and livelihood. It also captured critical reflection and suggestions for the improvement of the leadership training for future intervention. This document is the synopsis of the findings and experiences shared by the female garment workers in the learning reflection workshop facilitated in a participatory and experiential learning approach.
ABOUT THE REFLECTION WORKSHOP
Female garment workers are poor and marginalized women, which results social exclusion in urban areas. Work to engage this impact group forms a key part of CARE's Women's Empowerment Program.
CARE believes that workers can attain empowerment in terms of agency, relationship and structure- which are the three basic levers for women's empowerment.
Solidarity and Empowerment through Education, Motivation and Awareness (SEEMA) Project aims to promote and protect the rights of female garment workers by improving their human condition and social position.
As a part of activity SEEMA Project has provided Leadership Training to female garment workers. Leadership training was imparted to female garment workers associated with EKATA centers to develop their self-agency and leadership quality and skills so that they can advocate for their own rights and entitlements, and take part in decision-making processes at different spheres of their life and livelihood. The training was also supposed to boost up garment workers in developing relationship, networks and linkages with different institutions and structures such as, factory management, co-workers, family members (husband and other male members) and community neighbors.
The broader aspect of the training was to contribute to the voice raising capacity, future visioning, life skills and planning, building solidarity groups, self-confidence and problem solving skills of female garment workers at work place, family and in the community.
