A U film should be suitable for audiences aged four years and over, although it is impossible to predict what might upset any particular child.

Regulatory bodies

OFCOM - The Office of Communications, commonly known as Ofcom, is the government-approved regulatory and competition authority for the broadcasting, telecommunications and postal industries of the United Kingdom. Some of the main areas Ofcom presides over are licensing, research, codes and policies, complaints, competition and protecting the radio spectrum from abuse (e.g. pirate radio stations). The regulator was initially established by the Office of Communications Act 2002 and received its full authority from the Communications Act 2003.

BBFC - The British Board of Film Classification is a non-governmental organization, founded by the film industry in 1912 and responsible for the national classification and censorship of films exhibited at cinemas and video works, such as television programmes, trailers, adverts, public Information/campaigning films, menus and bonus content released on physical media within the United Kingdom.

PEGI – Pan European Game Information (PEGI) is a European system that determines the rating of a video game to help customers decide whether or not to buy a particular game.

OFCOM If Ofcom considers that a broadcast may have breached its codes, it will start an investigation. Report covers complaints received between: Tuesday 27 September 2016 to Monday 3 October 2016 Emmerdale, ITV, Monday, 26 September 2016: 203 Emmerdale, ITV, Tuesday 27 September 2016: 72 The X Factor, ITV, Saturday 1 October 2016: 12 The X Factor, ITV, Sunday 2 October 2016: 18

General viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children A PG film should not unsettle a child aged around eight or older. Unaccompanied children of any age may watch, but parents are advised to consider whether the content may upset younger, or more sensitive, children.

Films classified 12A and video works classified 12 contain material that is not generally suitable for children aged under 12. No one younger than 12 may see a 12A film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult. Adults planning to take a child under 12 to view a 12A film should consider whether the film is suitable for that child.

No one younger than 15 may see a 15 film in a cinema. No one younger than 15 may rent or buy a 15 rated video work.

PEGI FIFA 17 is rated 3 by the PEGI video game rating system whereas Grand Theft Auto 5 is rated 18, the reasoning for this is that FIFA 17 contains content that you have to be three or more years old to be able to play the game, whereas to be able to play Grand Theft Auto or even purchase it without an adult you would have to be 18 or over due to the fact that the game contains content that people under the age of 18 may find frightening.
