SEASON NOTES

CRYOSTASIS: Here are some notes about the current season and other matters that just didn’t fit in anywhere else: • Houston is 40-24 this season… the Rockets were 39-25 through the first 64 games of 2018-19 and finished 53-29… the Rockets won a season-high

eight straight games from 11/4-11/18 and lost a season-high four in a row from 1/14-1/20. • The Rockets are 22-10 at home this season… Houston was 31-10 at home in 2018-19 and has won 30+ home games in five of the past six seasons

after doing so five times the 22 seasons prior. • Houston is 18-14 on the road overall this season, including six straight wins from 12/5-12/23… the Rockets won 13 of their final 19 road games in

2018-19 after starting 9-13 on the road. • Houston has led by double-digits in 48 of the 64 games this season (37-11 mark)… the Rockets were 45-13 when leading by 10+ points in 2018-19. • The Rockets have trailed by double-digits in 30 games this season (11-19 mark)… Houston was 10-24 in games in which it trailed by 10+ last

season… the Rockets never led at Miami on 11/3, vs. Dallas on 11/24 or at Charlotte on 3/7… the Rockets overcame a 25-point deficit in their win vs. San Antonio on 12/16, marking the largest comeback in franchise history (previous 23 vs. Portland on 1/22/77).

• The Rockets are 36-6 when leading after three quarters of play this season (42-6 in 2018-19) and 4-18 when tied or trailing (11-23 in 2018-19). • Houston is 6-6 in games decided by five or fewer points this season, including 4-5 by three or fewer… the Rockets were 13-12 in games decided by

five or fewer points last season, including 5-7 in games decided by three or fewer. • The Rockets have won 20 games by 10+ points this season (29 in 2018-19), including nine by 20+ (12 in 2018-19)… the Rockets are outscoring

opponents by 3.8 points per game this season (fifth in NBA w/+4.7 in 2018-19) • The Rockets have lost by double-digits 12 times this season, including 20+ four times (biggest loss by 36 at Phoenix on 2/7)… Houston lost 12 games

by double-digits last season, including four by 20+ with the worst loss coming by 28 points at Philadelphia on 1/21/19. • Houston is 25-17 against teams from the Western Conference this season, including 11-10 on the road, after going 32-20 in 2018-19 (14-12 on

road)… the Rockets are 15-7 against the East this season, including 7-4 on the road, after going 21-9 in 2018-19 (8-7 on the road). • The Rockets won in overtime at Boston on 2/29 marking their second OT game of the season (lost at SA on 12/3)…. since winning its first five

overtime games under head coach Mike D’Antoni, Houston has gone 3-5 (all coming since the start of 2018-19). • Houston is 3-6 in the second game of back-to-backs this season after going 8-4 in 2018-19. • Both James Harden and Russell Westbrook are averaging 20+ points this season… the last time Houston had two players average 20+ points in a

single season was 2007-08 (Yao Ming: 22.0 ppg; Tracy McGrady: 21.6 ppg). HIGHLANDER: The Rockets need one more win to secure their 14th straight season going .500 or better. San Antonio was 27-36 through games played on 3/10 and is the only other team to have gone .5000 or better in each of the past 13 seasons. From 1984-85 through 2018-19, Houston went .500 or better in 32 of the 35 seasons; no other team did so more than 30 times over that span. PLAIN AND SIMPLE: Houston is 23-1 when shooting 37.0% or better from 3-point range this season and 17-23 when failing to do so. The only loss when shooting 37.0% or better came at New Orleans on 12/29 when both James Harden and Russell Westbrook didn’t play. The Rockets are 139-26 (84.2%) when shooting 37.0% or better from behind-the-arc under head coach Mike D’Antoni going back to 2016-17. AIN’T IT (TWO) GRAND: James Harden had 2,059 points through is first 60 games played this season He had 2,199 points through his first 60 games played in 2018-19. The last player to have scored 2,000+ points within his first 60 games played in consecutive seasons was Michael Jordan in 1986-87 and 1987-88. Since Jordan also topped 2,000 points within his first 60 games played in 1989-90, the only other player to have done so besides Harden was Kobe Bryant in 2005-06. The only other player to have scored 2,000+ points within his first 60 games played in consecutive seasons was… you guessed it, Wilt.

Page 3: REGULAR SEASONGAME #65 • AWAY GAME #33 HOUSTON … · 2 days ago · Has recorded 2+ blocks in 10 of the past 11 games and has 35 blocks in 14 games since joining Houston after

6-8 AND UNDER LEAGUE: The Rockets are 12-7 over their past 19 games. Over that span, the only players listed taller than 6-8 who saw action were 7’0” Isaiah Hartenstein (24 minutes in 4 games), 7’0” Tyson Chandler (one second in one game), 6’9” Bruno Caboclo (28 minutes in 5 games) and Clint Capela (17 minutes in 1 game) who was traded to Atlanta on 2/5. Let’s take a gander at some stats from this lineup we’re all calling small even though they’re all probably still taller than most of us:

• Houston is being outrebounded by an average of 8.8 rpg over the past 19 games (168 total) but by just 0.9 rpg (17 total) in the fourth quarter. • The Rockets are averaging 16.4 3-pointers made (35.3%) and 46.5 3-point attempts over the past 19 games… the Rockets took 40+ 3FGA in 17

straight games from 1/27-3/7, breaking their own NBA single season record of 14 set at the start of this season. • Houston is averaging 4.3 more 3FGM than opponents over the past 19 games (82 total), up from +2.7 per over the first 45 games • The Rockets are averaging 9.8 steals while forcing 17.7 turnovers over the past 19 games… Houston is averaging 13.7 tpg over that span. • Despite the smaller lineup, Houston is averaging 5.3 blocks over the past 19 games, up from 5.1 bpg the first 45 games. REBOUNDS? WE DON’T NEED NO STINKING REBOUNDS!: Houston has been outrebounded in 17 of the past 18 games, including 15 straight from 1/29-3/5 (team’s longest streak going back to 1983-84. The Rockets have been outrebounded by double-digits 14 times this season (7-7 mark), including nine of the past 18 games. Houston won three straight games from 1/31-2/4 despite being outrebounded by double-digits in each game. That tied for the longest streak by any team dating back to 1983-84. There have been five other three-game streaks over that span, including one by Houston from 12/29/94-1/3/95. Prior to the Rockets, the last three-game streak was by Dallas from 12/26-12/30/14. SMOL BALL: The Rockets played consecutive games on 1/31 and 2/2 without using a player listed taller than 6-6. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the last time a team only gave minutes to players listed 6-6 or shorter in a game was the New York Knicks against the Chicago Zephyrs on 1/31/63. Of course, this doesn’t take into account the league’s “restructuring” of how player heights were reported heading into this season which saw numerous players “shrink,” including Rockets who used to be listed above 6-6, but hey, don’t let facts get in the way of a good story. WORKING 25/7: Both James Harden (34.4 ppg, 7.4 apg) and Russell Westbrook (27.5 ppg, 7.0 apg) are averaging at least 25.0 points and 7.0 assists this season. No set of teammates have ever averaged 25+ points 7+ assists in a single season in NBA history. RUSSFEST: Russell Westbrook has scored 20+ points in each of his past 34 games played, including 30+ 20 times. Here are some Rockets related notes regarding his scoring: • Westbrook is averaging 27.5 ppg this season… no Harden teammate averaged more than 18.6 ppg in any of his first 7 season with the Rockets. • Westbrook has scored 20+ points in a career-high 34 straight games played (previous high was 21 games)… that is the longest streak by a Rocket

not named Harden in franchise history. • Westbrook has led the Rockets in scoring 19 times this season… last season, there were only nine games in which Harden didn’t lead the Rockets in

scoring, with no teammate doing so more than three times. • Westbrook has scored 30+ points 21 times in 53 games played this season, including 15 of his past 21 games played… since Harden joined the

Rockets in 2012-13, no other teammate has scored 30+ points more than 10 times and not more than five times in a single season. • Westbrook scored 30+ points in five straight games played from 1/9-1/20… the last Rocket not named Harden to have scored 30+ in at least four

straight games was Tracy McGrady with a six-game span from 12/29/06-1/8/07. • Westbrook has scored 40+ points four times this season… that is the most 40-point games in a season by a Rocket besides Harden since Tracy

McGrady had four games doing so in 2007-08. 20K CLUB: James Harden became the 45th player to reach 20,000 career points on 1/11 while Russell Westbrook became the 46th on 2/6. Harden became the seventh-youngest player to reach that milestone (30 years, 138 days) while Westbrook joins LeBron James and Oscar Robertson as the only players with at least 20,000 points, 7,000 assists and 6,000 rebounds. Harden and Westbrook are two of the 16 players in NBA history with at least 20,000 points, 5,000 assists and 4,000 rebounds, joining LeBron James as the only active players on that list. DUECENTO: Mike D’Antoni picked up his 200th win as head coach of the Rockets vs. Denver on 1/22, joining Rudy Tomjanovich (503) and Bill Fitch (216) as the only coaches with 200+ wins in franchise history. D’Antoni has the most wins (213) of any coach since joining the Rockets in 2016-17. He has the fourth-most wins of any active coach (668) and ranks 20th in NBA history.

STAY ON TARGET: Here are some upcoming milestones for James Harden and Russell Westbrook: • Harden needs 22 points to surpass Calvin Murphy (17,949) for the second-most in franchise history. • Westbrook ranks 14th all-time in assists with 7,267 and can finish the season ranked 13th (Maurice Cheeks w/7,392).

ZERO TO SIXTY IN THREE QUARTERS: James Harden scored 60 points vs. Atlanta on 11/30 without playing in the fourth quarter. Here are some notes from that performance: • It marked the fourth 60-point performance of Harden’s career, tying him with Michael Jordan for the third-most in NBA history; only Kobe Bryant (6)

and Wilt Chamberlain (32!!!) have more… it was also Harden’s 20th time scoring 50+ points (fourth-most all-time; third is Kobe with 25). • Harden scored all 60 of his points without playing in the fourth quarter… with 5:44 left in the third, Atlanta had 60 points and Harden had 51…

according to ESPN Stats & Info, Harden became the third player over the past 25 seasons to have scored 60+ through three quarters of play. • Harden scored his 60 points in 31 minutes of play… that marked the second-fewest minutes played in a 60-point game (Klay Thompson w/29). • Harden scored his 60 points in 24 field goal attempts… that marked the fewest FGA in a 60-point game in NBA history.

THE BEARD AND BRODIE: On 7/16, the Rockets acquired eight-time All-Star Russell Westbrook from Oklahoma City. James Harden was teammates with Westbrook in Oklahoma City during Harden’s first three NBA seasons from 2009-10 through 2011-12. Their last game together with the Thunder was in the 2012 NBA Finals. Here are some notes from this historic pairing:

• Harden (2017-18) and Westbrook (2016-17) have won two of the past three MVP awards… this marks the fourth time a duo has played together after both players won an MVP award within the previous three seasons: Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant for Golden State (2016-17), Julius Erving and Moses Malone with Philadelphia (1983-84), Bob Cousy and Bill Russell with Boston (1958-59 and 1959-60).

• Westbrook and Harden both finished top-10 in MVP voting in each of the past five seasons, with both placing in the top-five in the same season three times over that span.

• Westbrook and Harden are two of the five players in NBA history to have led the league in scoring and in assists at least once during their careers, joining Tiny Archibald, Jerry West, Oscar Robertson.

• Harden and Westbrook won two of the past five scoring titles… this marks the fourth time teammates have played together after both already led the league in scoring multiple times (Paul Arizin and Neil Johnston for the Philadelphia Warriors in 1957-58 and 1958-59 (Johnston’s final two seasons), Arizin and Wilt Chamberlain with the Warriors in 1961-62 (Arizin’s final season), and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Bob McAdoo with the Los Angeles Lakers from 1981-82 through 1984-85 (both won all of their scoring titles prior to 1976-77).
