SPECIAL TEAMS SPECIAL

The offensive and defensive units may get a majority of the highlights, but the Chiefs have proven that special teams can be just as valuable. Through the fi rst four games of the season, Kansas City possesses one of the top punt return units. Led by CB Javier Arenas, the Chiefs are averaging a 20.7 yard per punt return to rank third in the NFL. That average trails only Denver (21.9) and Chicago (21.8), who each have returned a punt for a TD. Meanwhile, Indianapolis has returned only three punts for two yards (0.7 avg.), the lowest return average and yardage total in the NFL. Indianapolis is allowing an 18.8-yard punt return average and gave up a 79-yard punt return touchdown at Houston (9/11). Kansas City’s opponents have recorded a 35.4 net punting average, ranking seventh in the NFL. The Chiefs punting unit has produced a 39.6-yard net average, the 10th-highest mark in the NFL. Kansas City has limited its opponents to only 63 return yards, the 11th-lowest tally in the NFL and is one of only six teams to not allow a touchback in the fi rst four games. After a back-and-forth battle that saw only field goals registered on the scoreboard for 55 minutes, Indianapolis walked off the field at Lucas Oil Stadium with a 19-9 victory. The Chiefs managed to keep QB Peyton Manning in check, holding the Colts to 244 net passing yards and only 341 yards of total offense. RB Jamaal Charles carried the ball 16 times for 87 yards to lead the ground attack. TE Tony Moeaki led the team with four receptions for 50 yards.

The Chiefs opened the game with a surprise onside kick, but the ball didn't travel 10 yards, giving Indianapolis the ball on the Kansas City 37-yard line. But the Chiefs defense held, forcing the Colts to settle for a 20-yard FG from K Adam Vinatieri, giving the Colts a 3-0 lead with 9:59 left in the opening quarter.

On Kansas City's ensuing drive, the Chiefs relied on the ground game to move the ball into Indianapolis territory. Faced with fourth-and-two from the Indianapolis eight-yard line, the Chiefs elected to go for it, but QB Matt Cassel’s pass was broken up by LB Gary Brackett, giving the Colts the ball on their own eight-yard line. The Colts drove the ball into KC territory, but the Chiefs defense held once again. Vinatieri converted a 24-yard FG to give the Colts a 6-0 lead with 9:14 left in the first half.

Just before intermission Manning and company faced fourth and two, S Jon McGraw tackled RB Joseph Addai one yard short of a first down, giving the Chiefs the ball with 0:18 left to play in the first half. Cassel found WR Chris Chambers for 13 yards and a late hit out of bounds added 15 yards for the Chiefs. Cassel then hit Moeaki on the sideline for six yards to stop the clock. Kansas City narrowed the Colts lead to 6-3 on a 45-yard K Ryan Succop FG with 0:07 left to play in the first half.

On the Colts first posession in the second half, they again had to settle for a FG. Vinatieri's 47-yard kick extended the Colts lead to 9-3 with 8:31 left in the third quarter. On the ensuing posession the Chiefs drove into the Red Zone, and Succop nailed a 35-yard FG, making the score 9-6 with 4:35 left in the third stanza.

McGraw picked off a Manning pass at the Indianapolis 34-yard line and returned it four yards to set Succop up for a 43-yard FG. Succop nailed his third kick of the day, tying the game at 9-9 with 3:26 left to play in the third quarter.

A defensive pass interference penalty moved the Colts into KC territory again. A critical 14-yard third-down pass to WR Pierre Garcon was ruled a completion but was overturned after Head Coach Todd Haley challenged the play, forcing a 42-yard Vinatieri FG that gave the Colts the 12-9 lead with 14:40 left to play in the game.

Manning led the Colts on a methodical drive that ended in the contest’s only TD. Manning went seven-for-nine on the drive that was capped by an 11-yard TD run from RB Mike Hart putting the Colts on top 19-9 with 4:02 left to play in the game. The Chiefs offense moved the ball into Colts territory. Faced with fourth-and-four, Succop attempted a 51-yard FG that sailed wide right. 2011 CHIEFS GAME-BY-GAME DEFENSE

THE LAST GAMEChiefs 22, Vikings 17Chiefs 22, Vikings 17

October 2, 2011 • Arrowhead Stadium • 72,931

Behind five field goals from K Ryan Succop and a total of 13 second-half points, the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Minnesota Vikings 22-17 at Arrowhead Stadium. QB Matt Cassel finished with 260 passing yards and a 102.7 rating to pace Kansas City in the victory. The Kansas City defense limited Minnesota RB Adrian Peterson to 80 yards on 23 carries in the game. Succop's five field goals tied a Chiefs record for most field goals made in a single game that was set by K Jan Stenerud and K Nick Lowery. On the game's opening drive, CB Javier Arenas recorded a 33-yard punt return, setting up a 40-yard field goal to put Kansas City ahead 3-0 with 7:16 left in the first quarter. Minnesota was quick to answer as the Vikings drove 80 yards in nine plays, with QB Donovan McNabb finding WR Devin Aromashodu for a 34-yard touchdown, giving the Vikings a 7-3 lead with 1:47 left in the first quarter. After a Chiefs punt, the Kansas City defense stymied a promising Vikings drive as a McNabb pass was tipped by RB Toby Gerhart and intercepted by CB Brandon Carr. The Chiefs second field goal was set up by a 42-yard pass from Cassel to WR Steve Breaston. Succop hit a 24-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 7-6 with 5:15 left to play in the first half. Kansas City took a 9-7 lead into halftime as Succop nailed a 51-yard field goal as time expired. The Chiefs opened the second half with a punt. K Ryan Longwell connected on a 33-yard field goal to give the lead back to the Vikings, 10-9 with 9:15 left to play in the third. Kansas City answered with another Succop field goal as he booted a career-long 54-yarder. The score was his second of the game longer than 50 yards, tying a Chiefs record, and put Kansas City back on top12-10 with 5:18 left in the third quarter. After another Minnesota punt, Cassel hit WR Dwayne Bowe with a 28-yard reception, which went on to set up another field goal. Succop split the uprights from 22 yards out to increase the lead to 15-10 with 0:09 left in the third quarter. After the ensuing kickoff, Minnesota was unable to convert on third down for their third-consecutive drive and Kansas City’s momentum was rolling. FB Le’Ron McClain caught a short pass for seven yards to start the drive and Bowe finished it with a 52-yard touchdown reception, increasing the lead to 22-10 with 13:51 left to play in the game. Following KC’s score, the Vikings refused to let up as they answered back with a scoring drive of their own. The eight-minute, 70-yard Minnesota drive included a 23-yard pass and run to WR Percy Harvin early and a 20-yard pass to WR Bernard Berrian later on to set up a one-yard touchdown catch by WR Michael Jenkins to cut the lead to 22-17 with 5:50 left in the game. Former Chiefs DE Jared Allen got to Cassel for his second sack of the game on the following series, and a pair of incomplete passes to WR Keary Colbert and Bowe put the ball back in Minnesota’s hands after a 61-yard punt by P Dustin Colquitt. Harvin put the Vikings in Chiefs territory with a 23-yard dash and the Vikings appeared to be rolling towards a comeback, but the Chiefs defensive line batted down a pair of passes, forcing fourth and 10 for the Vikings. An incomplete fourth-down pass from McNabb gave the Chiefs the ball back on downs and Kansas City was able to run out the clock for its first victory of the 2011 season.
