The goal of this year’s Symposium will be a practical approach to patients you may see in your practice and how to approach their problem. The method of teaching will be a case-based approach in which each case presents a specific patient problem that requires both diagnosis and treatment options that will be explored in detail by the faculty with audience interaction. The program has been divided into two parts. The first section will address supraventricular arrhythmias with a definite emphasis on atrial fibrillation (AF), which is the most common arrhythmia and one that requires a multi- faceted approach for proper treatment. Specific topics to be discussed in AF are: rhythm versus rate control treatment strategies; risk stratification for stroke and the use of warfarin, the newer oral anticoagulation drugs, and the role of the new Watchman device to occlude the left atrial appendage without surgery; cryptogenic stroke and the search for AF; and treatment options to maintain sinus rhythm such as catheter ablation. The second section will focus on ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. Areas covered include how to evaluate in a cost- effective manner patients with syncope, including the use of external monitoring and a state of the art small implantable loop recorder; appropriate candidates for cardiac resynchronization therapy; and the use of catheter ablation to cure ventricular arrhythmias. Modules on electrocardiography have been added after each section geared at common arrhythmias. Program Director Eric N. Prystowsky, MD, FACC, St.Vincent Medical Group Faculty Richard I. PROGRAM OVERVIEWAdministered by St.Vincent Foundation

Cardiac arrhythmias may be life-disturbing or life-threatening, and it is key for the health care provider to understand which patients fit into each category. The first section will address supraventricular arrhythmias with a definite emphasis on atrial fibrillation (AF), which is the most common arrhythmia and one that requires a multi-faceted approach for proper treatment.

Areas covered include how to evaluate in a cost-effective manner patients with syncope, including the use of external monitoring and a state of the art small implantable loop recorder; appropriate candidates for cardiac resynchronization therapy; and the use of catheter ablation to cure ventricular arrhythmias. Modules on electrocardiography have been added after each section geared at common arrhythmias.

Program Moderator Eric N. Prystowsky, MD

8:00-9:45 a.m. PART I Atrial Fibrillation and Other Supraventricular Tachycardias A: Cases Panel Members: Richard Fogel, MD Scott A. Freeland, PharmD Benzy Padanilam, MD David Rardon, MD

1. I just don’t feel good but my doctor tells me my AF is under control.

2. I have a high stroke risk but they tell me it is too risky to take blood thinners.

3. I was told to see an EP expert because they cannot determine why I had a stroke.

4. I felt my heart racing then nearly passed out, and it stopped when I got sick.

9:45 - 10:15 a.m. BREAK/View Exhibits

10:15 - 10:45 a.m. B: ECGs: Superventricular Arrhythmias Panel Members: Richard Fogel, MD Benzy Padanilam, MD David Rardon, MD

At the completion of this activity participants should be able to:

1. Define patients at risk for sudden death.

2. Differentiate between the nursing

management for PSVT patients treated

with ablation versus drug approaches.

3. Define the role of rate and rhythm control

strategies for atrial fibrillation (AF).

4. Discuss the nursing implications of new

oral anti-coagulants and LAA occluder for

preventing stroke in patients with AF.

5. Identify which patients with heart failure

can benefit from bi-ventricular pacing.

6. Discuss the nursing management of

patients with cryptogenic stroke.

7. Identify appropriate candidates for PVC

and VT ablation.

8. Discuss a cost effective care plan and

therapy for patients with syncope.

9. Determine which patients require risk

evaluation for sudden cardiac death.

10. Identify patients with AF benefitting from

anticoagulation with warfarin vs newer

agents.

11. Determine which patients with AF will

benefit from catheter ablation.
