College preparation in OhioIn addition to the courses required for graduation, it is

strongly recommended that students complete the following courses to prepare for success in college: At least 1 additional unit of Science. At least 1 additional unit of Social Studies. At least 3 units of a World Language. Other courses that will provide preparation for

your college major. Courses in technology that apply to your field

of study.

Honors DiplomaTo be awarded an Honors diploma the student is required to meet all but one of the criteria listed (7 of the 8 criteria):

1. Earn four units of English.2. Earn four units of Mathematics which must include at least

Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II and another higher level course or a four-year sequence of course which contains equivalent content.

3. Earn four units in Science including one unit of physics and one unit of chemistry.

4. Earn four units of Social Studies.5. Earn three units of one world language or two units each of two

world languages. (ASL is permitted).6. Earn one unit of Fine Arts.7. Maintain an unweighted cumulative high school GPA of at least

3.5 on a 4.0 scale; or8. Obtain a composite score of 27 or higher on the ACT or

equivalent SAT score.

What Math do I take?Remember - 4 units of math are required to graduate. Talk with current Math Teacher for advice. Even if students have

already earned 4 credits of Math, it is strongly recommended that all seniors take a math class during

Physical Education Options

.50 unit of PE is required to graduate. Each PE class counts for .25 credits.

1. Take PE during the school year (PE courses described on page 69 in HS Course Guide):

Lifetime Fitness Lifetime Sports Team Sports Physical Conditioning

2. PE Replacement: Student must complete two seasons of athletics (OHSAA Sanctioned only), band or cheerleading. Students that choose this option must replace PE with a .50 unit elective. Students who choose this option must complete and return an application for PE replacement to the School Counselor.

3. Summer Physical Education – Applications can be picked up in the school counseling office when they become available.

Fine Arts Requirement

One high school credit of fine arts is a requirement for graduation from PHSN:

Art: Courses described on pages 61 – 64 in HS Course Guide. Music: Courses described on pages 65 - 67 in HS Course

Guide. Theatre: Courses described on pages 25 - 26 in HS Course

Guide.

Read course descriptions and prerequisites carefully. Most courses are taken in sequential order.

Foreign/World Language Electives:

• Consider the following:• Most colleges require 2 years of the same

foreign/world language. Some competitive colleges recommend 3 years of the same foreign language.

• Honors Diploma requires 3 years of the same foreign language or 2 + 2.

• To succeed in learning a foreign language, you have to be willing to put in daily time to study.

• Need strong language arts and reading skills!• Options: American Sign Language, German, Spanish,

and French• Advanced Placement (AP) courses available in Spanish,

German and French.• All foreign/world language courses (including CCP foreign

language courses) are describe on pages 27 – 31 of HS Course Guide.

College Credit Plus (CCP) Program• Students can take college courses offered at PHS North/PHS Central, courses

offered college campuses in the area, or online college courses.

• There is no cost for these classes for the student or parent. (Disclaimer: If student drops a CCP course after deadline or does not pass the course, student/parents are responsible for paying cost of course.)

• Students must meet the eligibility requirements for the college course and must follow the college’s procedures for enrollment. (Specific ACT or qualifying placement test score is generally required.)

• If students choose to register for a College Credit Plus class, make sure to choose an alternate course in case the student does not meet the college’s criteria for the class.

• Student & parent should attend College Credit Plus Information Meeting that will be held on February 17, 2016 at 7 pm at PHS-CENTRAL Performing Arts Center.

NCAA Athletic Eligibility for College Bound Student Athletes

• Any student-athlete intending to participate in Division I or Division II college athletics should register with the NCAA eligibility center at www.eligibilitycenter.org

before the end of their Junior year.

• It is the student’s responsibility to understand the eligibility requirements for college athletics. Students will not be eligible to participate in collegiate athletics unless they have met the NCAA’s GPA, ACT/SAT test score and core course requirements.

• Juniors who plan to participate in college athletics should download and read the Guide for the College-Bound Student Athlete before completing their registration form for senior year.

Athletic Eligibility & Scheduling

• Athletic Eligibility - Students must pass 5 - .50 credit courses prior to season and during season to be eligible for athletics/band/theatre and have a minimum 1.75 GPA.

• Student-athletes should always be enrolled in at least 6 courses per semester.

• Physical Education classes do not count for athletic eligibility.

New School Day Schedule for 2016-17 Each school day will consist of 26 mods (15 minutes each). Lunch will be 2 mods (30 minutes). Most classes will be 3 mods (45 minutes). Most lab and AP classes will be 4 mods (60 minutes). The length of each class is indicated on the “Course Registration

Worksheet” and in the HS Course Guide. Study halls can be 1 – 3 mods (15 minutes to 45 minutes). It is not necessary to request lunch or study hall. All students

will be scheduled for lunch. Any other open units in a student’s day will be filled with study hall.

Students are expected to take a full schedule consisting of 6 classes each semester and/or a range of 18-24 units of courses per quarter to prepare for college, career and/or the military.

Please register for several alternate elective courses.You may not get all of the courses you request. If a particular course does not fit in your schedule, we will use your alternate courses as a back up if you have a schedule conflict. List your alternates in priority order!

Schedule ChangesBoard of Education Policy

Schedule change requests must meet one or more of the following criteria or the change will not be

made! Balances classes between semesters. To accommodate seniors who need requirements for

graduation. Completed a summer class with a passing grade and

need to adjust my schedule. Requesting to drop a study hall in order to add a class. Requesting a change because an original request was

not honored due to a scheduling conflict. Requesting to change a teacher is only permitted if the

student has had the teacher previously for the same course and he/she failed that course.

Requesting a change to adjust for special/alternative programming (Career Center, CCP, IEP, etc.)

Requesting a change due to an inappropriate course level dictated by the prerequisite.

Important dates to remember:

The school counselors will be available in the PHSN Lecture Hall during your study hall/commons and lunch periods for the next week to answer questions and assist you with the online registration process! Dates include: Feb. 11, 15, 17, 18, 19 and 22. You must complete your online course requests by Monday, February 22, 2016 at 2 p.m. At that time the online registration portal will close and you will no longer be able to register or make changes .Please select carefully as these are decisions that will impact your future!
