Transformational Technology-Enhanced Learning: Designing for

experience and engagement

What does innovation in online education look like and what pragmatic steps can any

educator or corporate trainer takes to begin to design for transformational learning

experiences? Through the lens of contemporary online learning environments –

designed, developed, and delivered by the Learning Technologies Media Lab at the

University of Minnesota and experienced by millions worldwide – Dr. Aaron Doering will

provide an in-depth look at principles he believes spur transformational online learning.

He urges educators from all fields to take a close look at their technology-enhanced

learning spaces and to work toward facilitating change in the way they and their

learners think, interact, and experience knowledge creation and innovation.

Bio:

An associate professor in Learning Technologies and co-director of the Learning

Technologies Media Lab at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Aaron Doering was

recognized as a top innovator by the Science Coalition in 2012. He is a pioneer in

adventure learning, geospatial learning, and learner-driven technology integration

strategies. Doering is recognized internationally as a Tech Awards laureate, which

honors innovators from around the world who are applying technology to benefit

humanity. At the University of Minnesota he holds the Bonnie Westby Huebner

Endowed Chair in Education and Technology, and is a fellow for the Institute on the

Environment.

Doering has delivered education on sustainability and climate change to over 15 million

learners worldwide while dogsledding and pulking over 5,000 miles through the

circumpolar Arctic, and traveling to remote regions on six continents. He has guided

and inspired teachers, students, and professionals around the globe through his

keynotes and workshops, beautifully crafted online learning environments,

award-winning publications, and recent TEDx talk. The quality of the online learning

environments and unique technology-enhanced experiences he has spearheaded, with

their focus not only on pedagogy and content but also on user experience and

innovative design, are rivaled by few.

Doering can often be found on the road collaborating with diverse cultures in remote

regions of the globe. He looks forward to exploring his design principles and educational

Barriers that Prevent Street Waste Pickers in South Africa from Improving Their

Socio-Economic Conditions

Abstract: Street waste pickers are the most visible group of people trying to survive

under poor socio-economic conditions. Despite the fact that their activities and

contribution towards recycling benefit the community at large, their social and

economic conditions remain poor. In a national study on the social and economic

conditions of street waste pickers in thirteen major cities around South Africa, a

number of social, economic and labour market barriers were identified that prevent

street waste pickers from improving their socio-economic conditions. These barriers

are dualistic in nature as they do not only put them in an environment that is not

economically sustainable, but also keeps them trapped in that environment.

Sister-in-law's Experiences Caring for a Sibling With Developmental Disability

Abstract: I used a phenomenological method to examine sisters-in-law's experiences

caring for siblings with developmental disabilities (DD). Three themes emerged after

drawing on stories shared by 7 women: for the sake of my husband, powerless, price

and pride. The results of this study showed that these Taiwanese women accepted the

cultural norms, by which they accepted the caregiving responsibility even though be a

caregiver might be on their own cost. Moreover, due to women’s position in their

husbands’ family, they were powerless and encountered tensions in the caregiving

process, especially when the issues of future caregiving were involved. Greater

attention must be paid to advocate sisters-in-law’s voices in the decision-making

process and help family to acknowledge and express their appreciation to

sisters-in-law’s contributions.

A Model of Effective Teaching in Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine how graduate students with undergraduate

major in arts, humanities and social sciences perceived individualized consideration,

Student-Professor Engagement in Learning, intellectual stimulation, and student deep learning,

and how these variables predict effective teaching. A sample of 251 graduate students

responded to a survey posted in two professional international associations and four

universities in the United States and other countries. A structural equation model analyzed the

influence of the independent variables on the dependent variable, effective teaching. A

multiple regression analysis indicated that individualized consideration, Student-Professor

Engagement in learning and deep learning, were significant predictors of effective teaching.

Intellectual simulation was the predictor of deep learning, which in turn influenced effective

teaching.

ICAEM2014 International Conference on Aviation Engineering and Management - ICAEM2014, will be held during September 2-3, 2014,

in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. ICAEM2014, aims to bring together researchers, scientists, engineers, and scholar students to exchange and

2014 5th International Conference on E-business, Management and Economics - ICEME 2014, will be held during September 2-3, 2014, in

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. ICEME 2014 aims to bring together researchers, scientists, engineers, and scholar students to exchange and share
