Optional Group Activities Fees Apply

A Note From Bill Barnes: Options for an experience facilitated by Chewelah Peak Learning Center Staff. Bill Barnes, the center’s general manager, has done activities with groups for close to 30 years. Words that are used to describe what he does might include Ropes Course, Challenge Course, team building, initiatives, metaphor play, or “we are going to do stuff and decide after what to call it when we are done.” He will be able to modify things to accommodate any level of physical involvement. He is offering to facilitate any or all of the following options: Program A: “A” is for adults, those of us who have been on the planet for a few more years. This could involve an extended time standing but could be adjusted if participants wish. It will involve more mental challenge but will have some level of physical activity. People should plan for about 2 hours for this program. We would need a minimum of 8 people to really make this program go. Program B: “B” is for bravery, those who are willing and physically able to face more of challenge. The plan for this one is to start with an activity and see where it leads. If you sign up for this one, you should plan on being on your feet for most if not all of 3 hours. Again, a minimum of 8 people is needed. Program C: “C” is for see, okay that one is a real stretch. The Peak does have one traditional high ropes course element. Want to see what you can see from up there? We can make that happen. It would be great if we had a little group doing this at the same time but we can work it out for you individually to have the opportunity.

Fees Costs will be $10 per person for Programs A and C, $15 per person for program B. Final scheduling of the time(s) for each will be done once we have a participant list from Sue Lind.

Environmental/Nature Classes Chewelah Peak Learning Center

Pote’s Mini-Trip June 8-10 Instructor – Wanda Peterson

Wanda Peterson is an outdoor environmental educator with many years experience in leading/teaching groups outside. She loves working with families and mixed age groups, and can adapt and be flexible as to what type of activities we do. 1. Tree Stories – We all have stories to tell and trees are no different. We will take a look at trees of Chewelah Peak- from a distance and up close and personal and maybe even "build a tree" from the inside out to learn what goes on inside. We can listen to each other's stories about trees and make up some of our own based on what we observed. Can be a forest walk or just around the perimeter of the field, based on the group. 2. Sound and Color Mapping – Become more aware of the natural world as we listen for sounds, and look for colors, shapes and patterns in nature. For those so inclined there will be paper and colored pencils to create and record what is observed. This kind of looking leads to amazing and interesting discoveries, and sets the stage for observing birds and wildlife. 3. Birds and binoculars – Gain tips and practice for using binoculars correctly and learn an easy method for bird identification. Chewelah has some binoculars or a monocular that can be borrowed. This activity can include a hike or just a walk around the grounds.

Fees Costs – the cost will depend on the number of people asking for the class. The class size limit is best restricted to 10 people. Please indicate class 1, 2 and/or 3 on your registration form if you would like to attend one or more of these classes. Wanda charges $25 per hour for the entire class, not per person.

Directions to Chewelah Peak Learning Center

Chewelah Peak Learning Center is located 55 miles north of Spokane and east of Chewelah on Flowery Trail Road. The Center is just nine miles from the traffic light in Chewelah (from the west) and seventeen miles from Highway 20 at Usk (from the east.)

Directions from Interstate 90 (or Hwy 2) – Spokane: Travel Interstate 90 or Highway 2 to Spokane. Take Highway 395 to the north, through Spokane. The signs will direct you to Hwy 395 and/or Colville; Hwy 395 follows Division and Ruby Streets through Spokane. Continue north out of Spokane on Hwy 395 (stay to the left when you get towards the north side of Spokane so you don’t take Highway 2 at the Y.) You will pass through/by Wandermere, Deer Park, Clayton, Loon Lake, Deer Lake, and Waitts Lake before you get to Chewelah. Once you arrive in Chewelah turn right (east) at the stoplight. This puts you on Main Street (note: the stoplight is at the intersection of Highway 395 and Main Street and is the first stoplight on 395 once you leave Spokane.) Some street signs will read Main Ave instead of

Main Street. Travel east on Main Street. Once you go through some gentle curves you will be on Flowery Trail Road. Follow this road for approximately 8 miles. When you reach the summit you will see two roads on the left that go to the homeowners’ area; our driveway is just beyond theirs on the left as you head down the hill. There is a small sign at the road that reads CHEWELAH PEAK LEARNING CENTER. You will see a snow park-parking loop on the right when you reach our driveway on the left.

Directions from Hwy 20 – West Side to Colville: Travel Highway 20 to the east until you reach Colville. Travel south out of Colville on Hwy 395. Chewelah is the next town south of Colville (approximately 25 miles.) Once you arrive in Chewelah turn left (east) at the stoplight. This puts you on Main Street (note: the stoplight is at the intersection of Highway 395 and Main Street and is the first stoplight on 395 once you leave Colville.) Some street signs will read Main Ave instead of Main Street. Travel east on Main Street. Once you go through some gentle curves you will be on Flowery Trail Road. Follow this road for approximately 8 miles. Directions from Hwy 20 – East Side – to Usk: Travel Highway 2 North out of Elk to Hwy 211 (the Sacheen Lake/Davis Lake Cut Off) to Hwy 20, or take Hwy 20 to the north from Newport or to the south from Metaline, Ione, Tiger, or Cusick until you reach Usk (around mile post 421.) Watch for a brown sign that reads “49 Degrees North Recreational Area” just before milepost 421. Turn west on McKenzie Road. McKenzie Road will take a sharp 90-degree turn to the left and then the right. McKenzie Road becomes W. Calispell-McKenzie Road two miles from Hwy 20 and then at four miles it becomes the Flowery Trail Rd. Travel approximately 13 more miles to Chewelah Peak Learning Center. The entrance to the Center is on the right or north side of the Flowery Trail Road – less than one mile past the entrance to the 49 Degrees North Ski Hill.
