Louisville is many things—original, eclectic, historic, dynamic and energetic. You could spend a lifetime getting to know the city, the people, the neighborhoods, the culture and the history that make Louisville truly original. Thomas Edison’s light bulb was first displayed publically in Louisville. Muhammad Ali, the cheeseburger and even chewing gum were born here! Louisville is one of the most accessible cities in America and is within a day’s drive of more than half the nation’s population. Located along the Ohio River on the Kentucky-Indiana border, its unique location and geography has made Louisville a cosmopolitan hub of transportation, commerce and cultural exchange for centuries.

Home to artists and adventurers, actors and statesmen, everyday heroes and international icons, the sons and daughters of Louisville have left their mark on the world. From its frontier founding at the time of the American Revolution, to the heyday of Steamboat transport in the early 19th century, through the city’s importance as a Union base during the Civil War, Louisville has always balanced a sense of history with an ability to re-invent itself as the city of originals.

Architectural Glass Art, located in Louisville, is the oldest continuously operating glass business in America. Louisville’s downtown district showcases several state-of-the-art glass facilities: Glassworks, the University of Louisville’s Cressman Center for Visual Arts, and Flame Run Glass Gallery and Studio. The University of Louisville offers an outstanding glass program featuring thorough training to undergraduate students in the development of technical skills for the manipulation of glass in both hot and cold states.

The Kentucky Art and Craft Foundation Gallery serves as a spectacular location for some of Kentucky’s finest craftworks and sponsors regular traveling exhibits and workshops. The Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft was established to promote the rich art and craft heritage of Kentucky through three main areas of programming:

exhibition, education and support of artists through the retail Gallery Shop.

Louisville’s vibrant and diverse arts community includes lively and active theatrical activities with a Tony Award- winning theatre house and the internationally renowned Louisville orchestra, ballet and Kentucky Opera. The Louisville Fund for the Arts is the first and oldest in the United States.

The Speed Art Museum, Kentucky’s oldest and largest art museum, houses an extensive and historic collection bringing great art and people together. The Frazier International History Museum represents a collection of arms, armor and related historical artifacts dating back over 1,000 years. Since 1909, the Louisville Visual Art Association has engaged artists and audiences through an energetic agenda of education, community outreach, artist support and exhibitions.

West Main Street, at the center of Old Louisville downtown, is at the heart of the cultural district featuring the second largest collection of cast-iron facades in the United States. And it takes a special place to craft the “Official Bat” of Major League Baseball. Since 1884, Louisville Slugger has put prime lumber in the hands of the greatest players of the game. The museum is terrific!

Starving for something new and exciting? Louisville’s restaurant scene has grown to become one of the most rich and vital dining destinations in the country. Named one of the Top 5 “Foodiest” small cities in America by Bon Appétit Magazine, Louisville’s chefs, both homegrown and newly arrived, are some of the city’s greatest cultural treasures.

With so much to see and do, you may want to brush up on all that Louisville has to offer in advance of your visit. Take time to look at www.gotolouisville.com. Exploring Louisville online gives you a chance to get to know the city before you arrive.

We look forward to sharing with you all that Louisville has to offer!

THINGS TO KNOW

& Travel InformationWHAT’S NEW AT THE

2011 Conference?

VOLUNTEERS HELP

Create the SuccessVolunteers are an integral part of the success of the Gathering. They help keep our Gather-ing fees lower for everyone! We need volun-teers prior to the start of the conference and during conference hours—from early in the morning until late at night. We hope that all conference attendees will volunteer at least two hours during the conference, however, more hours would be greatly appreciated. We have two programs that help support our volunteers and offer an extra incentive to say, “Yes!”

Hyatt Award for Volunteerism

In addition to the ISGB sponsored scholar-ships, volunteers working six or more hours at the Gathering will be eligible to win the Hyatt Hotel Corporation Volunteerism Award. Those who volunteer at least six hours in Louisville will be eligible for the Hyatt Award in Bel-levue/Seattle, Wash., in 2011. A winner will be selected at random.

The Hyatt Award will include a compli-mentary full-conference registration and a three-night stay in an upgraded room at the conference hotel. No application is needed, however, volunteer hours must be logged with the Volunteer Coordinator in order to qualify. Please Note: Attendees who volunteer as a condition of their current scholarship are not eligible for this award. If the winner is unable to attend the conference, an alternate will be selected.

Work Exchange (WE!) Program

A number of volunteers will be able to work in exchange for lower conference fees. This year, the Work Exchange (WE!) program will need approximately 10 volunteers to donate at least 10 hours each in exchange for the reduced conference fee. The reduced conference assignments will be made on a first come, first confirmed basis.

Applications for the WE! Program must be submitted to the Volunteer Coordinator by March 11, 2011. Notification of acceptance will be made by March 24, 2011. If all positions are not filled by March 24, additional applica-tions will be reviewed.

When an applicant is confirmed for the program, a letter of acceptance will be sent along with a special WE! Volunteer link to the Gathering online registration site. WE! applications can be printed from our website at www.isgb.org or contact Margie Shanahan at [email protected].

We are excited to return to Louisville, home of horse racing’s Churchill Downs and the Louisville Slugger! Since our last Gathering here six years ago, the city has exploded onto the art scene with new museums, galleries and programs that promote artists and their works. Our own beloved glass is a well respected art form here, as evidenced by the number of state-of-the-art glass facilities.

In the downtown area, creative and exciting new restaurants blend well with the more traditional eateries to offer an amazing array of dining. Just a few steps outside our hotel is Fourth Street Live, which offers diversions including shopping, live entertainment, and everything from fast food to fine dining. Louisville is centrally located and an easy day’s drive for much of the eastern U.S., while Louisville International Airport, just 15 minutes from downtown, offers convenient flight options.

Our 2011 line up is one that you don’t want to miss! The presentations, gallery tours and workshops promise to be a treat for your creative soul. The exciting and fun-filled opening reception is the perfect place to meet up with old friends as well as new to plan your time together over the coming days. The Friday evening Gallery Tour provides the opportunity to see our members’ works alongside other beautiful artwork in four great locations. Even the former Beaded Objects Event has a whole new twist: “Louisville Beaded Trifecta Contest – Horses, Hats & More.”

The Gathering is always a great place to shop for supplies and treasures alike. Our wonderful vendors will be open extended hours so you will have plenty of time to find that perfect new tool or bundle of glass. The much-anticipated Live Auction, always a crowd pleaser, will offer up tools, glass, beads, jewelry, equipment and maybe even a few surprises. And what would the Gathering be without the marvelous Bead Bazaar, the bead lover’s candy store? Attendees are free to shop a full hour before the public, so be sure to get there early for the best shopping.

All of the information about the Gathering, including this catalog, registration forms and application forms, can be found on our website, www.isgb.org. If you have any additional questions, Sarah Riggle in the home office is available to help you at (614) 222-2243.

Please take time to read about all that Gathering XIX has to offer. We sincerely hope you will join us and I look forward to sharing a personal welcome to you in Louisville!

Dora Schubert Trained as a fine artist and graphic designer in Singapore and Florida, Dora put her life as an artist on hold while her children were young. From 1994 to 2001, upon her husband’s request and due to her ability to speak fluently in English, Cantonese, Mandarin and German, she joined his company to help manage the business. But in 2003, Dora was introduced to lampworking and was immediately drawn to how glass in its molten state can be manipulated—how intricate and complex designs can be made by using thinner glass stringers.

Within two weeks, Dora had set up her home studio. Her hobby quickly became a passion and she found herself spending 12 hours a day at the torch. Today, Dora is as passionate as ever about experimenting with glass. When she discovers something new, she works at it until all possibilities within her capacity are exhausted. Many of her works are inspired by colors in nature and textiles, Moorish designs and architecture, as well as the microscopic world of cells and bacterium.

You can read more about Dora and her work in Perlenpoesie, Bead&Button, Craft & Design, BeadWork, It’s All About Beads, Glass For Life (Bullseye), Beads & Beyond, and more!

A native of Singapore, Dora now lives in Wentorf bei Hamburg, Germany, with her husband, two daughters and a golden retriever. She teaches lampworking in Europe and the United States, and is a full-time glass beadmaker. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, cooking, photography and sock-knitting.

You can view and enjoy Dora’s work at www.doraschubert.com.

Open Torch is also the place where manufacturers will showcase new torches, equipment and glass, as well! You also requested more Boro! And now you’ll have it. ABR Imagery is making it happen.

There will be 30-minute time limits on torches in an effort to allow everyone who would like to use them, the opportunity to do so. These time limits will be enforced as needed. Please bring your safety glasses and personal hand tools.

important event for our organization and for our fundraising efforts! We encourage you to donate a bead or bead-related item to the Silent Auction. As a bidder, this is a wonderful opportunity to add to your collection of beads and to help support our ISGB Educational Programs.

Please send your donation before the conference begins. Receiving them in advance of the Gathering allows the wonderful volunteers that work on this event the opportunity to document your donation, complete the bid sheets and prepare the auction display boards before everyone arrives at the conference. We thank you for your help. If necessary, last minute donations can be collected during conference on-site check-in.

2011 MASTER PRESENTER

John Kobuki John has been working with glass since 1995, following a career in the banking industry and after he started a graphics and T-shirt printing business that led to working in the Music industry…that eventually led to the glass! He holds a degree in both economics and finance, but he is recognized for his dynamic, colorful marbles created with the compression technique used to make flowers and other deeply encased designs. He is also very well known for his amazing jellyfish.

John started out watching a few different lampworkers at a shop when he was helping them develop a catalogue. He eventually had to get his hands on glass and he started making pendants, oil lamps and bottles. He built his own shop in his garage and has been working there since 1998. Right after that, John published the website glasscharm.com for selling pendants and he soon discovered there was a marble world out there—and he started making them.

He began with the marbles that you commonly see, then he “discovered a few things” while experimenting. This new- found knowledge led to flowers and ocean bottom type marbles, but John always felt like the colors were meant to be inside the glass, not on top of it. So, he started to refine inside-out type marbles by encasing the design. The rest, as they say, is history. The result? John’s crisp, clear and highly colorful work!

John was awarded first place honors at the Eugene Flame Off competition for marbles and has been published in 100 Lampworkers and Glass Line Special Edition. He has demonstrated and exhibited in the United States, Europe and Japan, teaches internationally, and currently lives in Seattle. His work can be viewed at www.kobukiglass.com.

“Some of my friends get a good chuckle when I tell them I make marbles for a living. It’s not just a living; it’s more like a calling.”

Convergence III: Inspirations and Interpretations – Art Glass Bead Jewelry Inspired by Other Works of Art

What piece of art moves you? What painting leaves you breathless with its sheer beauty? What song touches your soul? Maybe it’s an art installation or sculpture that takes you away to another reality; perhaps it’s a work of cinema. Convergence III will feature functional, wearable jewelry inspired by other works of art and showcasing handmade glass beads. The exhibition represents both individual and team efforts that enhance the achievement of each artist’s vision and through their shared passion, the results are nothing less than stellar. For our participating artists, whatever work of art speaks to them is what you will see in these innovative and very special treasures. This exhibition highlights the remarkable richness and diversity in one-of-a-kind bead and jewelry design from artists around the world.

Surface: Beads of Internal Depth and External DecorationThis distinctive collection will open at the Bead&Button Show in June as a celebration

of our fifth year in presenting extraordinary glass exhibitions with the Bead&Button Show.Artists were invited to submit beads that played on the idea of “surface,” whether dealing with the external appearance or what lies beneath. This juried exhibition, like previous years with Trajectories, Out of the Box, Convergence I and Perspectives, represents the captivating styles, techniques and processes used in contemporary glass beadmaking. Thousands will see this wonderful exhibit in Milwaukee and at the Gathering in Louisville.

Arts of Engagement: Beyond a Glass BeadHave you ever wondered, is a bead just a bead? Have you ever made a bead in response

to a critical issue or time in history with the hope that it can send a message of transformation? How do you imagine your beads at this moment in time? Our artists will use their answers to these questions and their creativity to bring their ideas to life through glass. This unique and “engaging” show will certainly stimulate your imagination!

Bead Tutorials: A Springboard for Creative ExplorationFifteen beadmakers from around the world display their explorations of 10 bead tutorials.

Each volunteer participant in the group played the role of “student” to attempt to create a bead, based only on a written tutorial and a sample bead. The resulting exhibition showcases each artist’s unique “spin” on classic themes (such as eye beads and galaxy beads), as well as their bold and creative use of innovative techniques and materials that were frequently far outside their comfort zone. This exhibit celebrates the wonderful synergy between glass beads and diverse materials, such as resin and Precious Metal Clay. Viewed alongside a signature bead from each beadmaker, the work of the group demonstrates the process of design exploration that is a learning experience and the foundation of creativity.

posted on the Release-A-Bead website at www.releaseabead.com.This summer, we will be releasing beads in the Louisville area to

generate interest and excitement prior to the Gathering. Fifty of these beads will include “Golden Tickets,” which will give

the lucky finder a free entry to our Bead Bazaar! Share your love of glass beads with a stranger—maybe they will

fall in love just like you did! Please send your bead(s), along with the form available on the Release-A-Bead website, to the address below. Beads must be received no later than June 30, 2011.

Once again, our Vendors have added some special hours for our Louisville attendees. They will be open at 10 AM on Thursday morning!

NOTE: VENDORS WILL BE CLOSING AT 3 PM ON SUNDAY, JULY 31.

Remember that all ISGB members who want to be Commercial or Technical Vendors must be Corporate Level members or be required to pay the Non-Member rate for exhibit space.

The ISGB Postcard PROJECT

POSTCARDS MUST BE RECEIVED BY JUNE 30.

PHOTOGRAPH YOUR WORK FOR THE ANNUAL ISGB POSTCARD PROJECT!These postcards are used to inspire and capture the attention of bead lovers, jewelry designers,

artists and collectors. It is very easy to participate and great fun!Simply have postcards made from a photo of your work and donate 200 of those postcards to

ISGB. All of the donated postcards are sorted and packaged, and offered for sale at the Gathering. Many people collect these from year-to-year and they are always one of our most popular items that sell out quickly.

Each participant in the Project will receive a complimentary box of postcards. Don’t miss this chance to get your work seen by a broader audience. Each artist is responsible for having his or her own cards printed. There are many companies that offer printing, several of which are listed to left.

THIS YEAR, SOMETHING NEW AND SPECIAL WITH THE POSTCARD PROJECT.This Gathering event is sponsored by The Flow, Profitable Glass Quarterly and Glass Patterns

Quarterly magazines! Purchase a box of postcards and you might be one of the lucky winners of their Bead and Jewelry CD (absolutely fantastic ,if you haven’t seen it!) which has 65 projects and retails for $ 24.95. This is a great added value to our already popular annual treasure trove of postcards!

REMEMBER:• Finished postcards must be no larger than 4.5” X 6”. • Once your printing is complete, please send 200 postcards to the address noted below. • All postcards must be new each year. Previous project cards will not be accepted.

PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR NAME, ADDRESS, TELEPHONE NUMBER AND E-MAIL ADDRESS WITH YOUR POSTCARDS.

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND, this year’s Juried Show for the Gathering will once again feature pendants! This event is open to all ISGB members and offers an opportunity to present your best work in response to a theme.

The theme for this year’s show is Arts of Engagement: Beyond a Glass Bead. Have you ever wondered, is a bead just a bead? Have you ever made a bead

in response to a critical issue or time in history with the hope that it can send a message of transformation? How do you imagine your beads at this moment in time? The possibilities for interpretation are endless with this theme. Get creative and bring your ideas to life through glass!

Please remember that all beads must be made into singular pendants and will need to be strung on something for display. For example, you could use a short piece of ribbon, leather, cord or chain.

To enter, send a CD with 3 to 6 images of individual beads that are representative of your intended work (images need not be of the actual beads being sent), along with this application and a $ 25 fee payable to ISGB. Up to six pieces may be submitted if you are

accepted for the show. All pieces must be for sale. An inventory list with Artist contact information and retail price(s) MUST be included with your pieces when they are finally submitted for the show. No exceptions will be made.

Selected artists will receive 50% of the retail price of the sold items. Payments and any unsold pieces will be returned via insured mail by September 30, 2011. Purchased work will not be released until Saturday, July 30, 2011, following the Gallery Tour.

Please send a CD and $ 25 payable to ISGB to:

The ISGB - Beads of Courage Community Project & Show (formerly All Member Show) is an opportunity to exhibit your work (beads are not for sale), as well as give a little something back to the Louisville community. This non-juried show is open to all ISGB members and is a wonderful way for new beadmakers to participate in their first show, as well as a good opportunity to present their work in response to a theme.

The theme for this year’s show is Louisville: Possibilities. Did you know that Louisville is known as the Possibility City? Our host city has so many wonderful claims to fame. So, whether you make a bead celebrating the Kentucky Derby Run for the Roses, a Louisville Slugger, the Belle of Louisville riverboat, or a bead honoring the University of Louisville Cardinals, you have great inspiration to choose from this year!

Each artist is limited to one entry and beads will be on display throughout the Gathering. We will once again have Attendees’ Choice awards. The two artists receiving the two highest number of votes will each be awarded a gift certificate!

In the spirit of giving, we plan to present our project to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kentuckiana on Sunday at the Gathering. We are asking that you donate your bead to this wonderful cause. Your bead will be a part of the permanent ISGB Louisville: Possibilities exhibit for children and families to enjoy every day!

• PLEASE SHIP your bead in a well-wrapped, sturdy box. • BE CERTAIN to INSURE your package! • ALL ENTRIES MUST be RECEIVED before the Gathering. The display will be completed before Gathering attendees arrive in Louisville.
