PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Introduction Season 2014-15 was a success with quality performances on-field from all levels of grade cricket through to Kookaburra Greater Northern Cup and representative games. The year was significant as it saw the Devonport Orions win their first A-Grade Premiership since 2003-04, bringing its overall tally to 13 wins. It frustrated Ulverstone, bidding for its fifth successive premiership, prevailing in a hard fought contest. Congratulations to Devonport Cricket Club, it’s year was one of great achievement as it also won the 1st Grade T20 Grand Final and the Second Grade T20 and Two-Day premierships. Season Launch Our season was launched on October 10 at The Point Function Centre in Burnie. Three new coaches were introduced on the night, with Andy Harris (Burnie Hurricanes), Steven Adkins (Latrobe) and Andrew Davidson (Wynyard) stepping into these key roles for 2014-15. Three clubs also benefited from English imports, with James Hendrickson and Jake Libby at Latrobe, Chris Firth at Sheffield, Alex McChristie at Devonport and Andy Harris at the Burnie Hurricanes. All five delivered positive results for their clubs on and off the field. The guest speaker was former first-class umpire Darren Close, who recounted some entertaining stories from his time standing in Sheffield Shield matches, including giving Dennis Lillee his first wicket playing for Tasmania.

A Hall of Fame Induction was made to worthy recipient Kevin Pearce (Devonport, Latrobe), while his former team-mate David Squibb (East Devonport, Devonport, Latrobe) was added as a Nominee. It was pleasing to bestow the Lance Cox Merit Award on Darcy Leno (Wynyard) to recognise his outstanding services as Club President, Sponsorship Director and Volunteer over many years.

We welcomed Kevin Matthews as a new CNW Board Member, and also announced the awarding of Association Life Membership to former President Chris Mitchell.

It is with pleasure I present the 2014-15 Cricket North

West Annual Report, the 64th for our Association.

Kevin Pearce – Hall of Fame Inductee

It was opportune to also inform clubs that the CNW Strategic Plan for the next 5 years was finalised. Its purpose is to pursue standards that will increase development of cricket so that it continues to be the number one sporting pursuit during the summer months. Local Grade Competition Highlights We congratulate this season’s premiership teams, as follows: CNW 1st Grade – Devonport defeated Ulverstone Goodstone Group 2nd Grade – Devonport defeated Ulverstone Crowe Horwath Female T20 – Wynyard defeated Burnie Hurricanes Commonwealth Bank Under-17s – Circular Head defeated Burnie Hurricanes Commonwealth Bank Under-15s – Burnie Hurricanes defeated Latrobe We also congratulate our T20 competition premiers, with Devonport claiming the Sportspower Burnie 1st and 2nd Grade titles, defeating Latrobe and Ulverstone respectively. Congratulations are also in order for Circular Head, who claimed the premiership double in the Under-17s, defeating Ulverstone to claim the Commonwealth Bank Under-17 T20 title.

A new four-team Female T20 competition was staged involving the Burnie Hurricanes, Latrobe, Ulverstone and Wynyard after Cricket North established their own four-team competition. The Crowe Horwath Female T20 Grand Final was held at West Park in front of a good crowd. Likewise good crowds attended all other Grand Finals. A highlight was Wynyard defeating Cricket North Premiers Riverside in the first-ever Female Greater Northern T20 Grand Final.

The interest in midweek T20 games for 1st Grade and junior competitions is increasingly strong, with good crowds at venues through November, December and January. High standards of play were achieved in 1st Grade Two-Day matches. The introduction of extra bonus points for batting 80 overs in the first innings saw teams batting longer and set up some tense second day run chases. There were 47 five-wicket hauls and 16 centuries across all grades, with the most formidable being Gregg Sharman’s 135 not out to get Wynyard within 10 runs of an incredible outright victory against the Burnie Hurricanes. Dale Baker reached 10,000 1st Grade runs for Burnie Yeoman (now trading as the Burnie Hurricanes), and has amassed over 13,000 runs when including his matches for Burnie prior to the merger with Yeoman in 1989. It could be many years before the competition’s leading 1st Grade run-scorer’s record is overhauled.

Wynyard – Crowe Horwath Female T20 Premiers

Grand Final & Association Highlights The Grand Final Luncheon held at The Point Function Centre, West Park on Day 1 of the CNW 1st Grade Grand Final attracted 70 attendees. Guest speaker was Cricket Tasmania’s Game & Market Development Manager Ben Smith. He talked about the benefits and advantages of young players remaining in multiple sports for as long as possible, and current trends in cricket participation. The Grand Final contest was even for a significant part of the match, but Devonport’s first innings advantage was too much for Ulverstone to overcome. Bruce Will of Devonport was a fitting Trevor Docking Medal winner, recognised as Player of the Match for his two crucial innings with the bat.

First Grade Player of the Year Award The CNW Player of the Year Award went to irrepressible Ulverstone batsman Josh Walmsley, who claimed his third award win after producing another outstanding season. Ben Hilfenhaus Medal The Ben Hilfenhaus Medal for the competition’s best Under-21 player, voted on by 1st Grade Captains, went to Corey Murfet of Ulverstone, whose successful year took him to the National Training Centre as part of an Australian Under-18 Talent Camp. First Grade Batting and Bowling Awards

As part of Cricket North West’s commitment to honouring past greats, naming status to major awards are rotated on a regular basis. After more than 10 years of honouring former Devonport and Latrobe fast bowler Harold Allen, it was decided that former Ulverstone spinner Don Pearce should be recognised. The Don Pearce 1st Grade Bowling Award was won by Chris Lindsay of Devonport. Likewise after honouring former South Burnie and Burnie batsman Ray Stokes it was decided that Wynyard and Burnie batsman Les Allen should be recognised. The Les Allen 1st Grade Batting Award was won by Josh Walmsley of Ulverstone.

Kookaburra Greater Northern Cup We were indebted to Kookaburra for its continuing role as naming rights sponsor for the annual One-Day competition played between CNW and Cricket North clubs. Ulverstone scored a thrilling win over South Launceston by five wickets, with Player of the Match Jacob Snare leading his team to victory with just three balls remaining.

Statewide T20 Competition After winning the CNW 1st Grade T20 title and defeating the Leven Cricket Association, Natone and Forth in the earlier rounds, Devonport represented CNW against a powerful South Hobart – Sandy Bay unit in the Men’s Grand Final at Devonport Oval. Despite a brave fightback with the ball, the Orions batsmen couldn’t chase down the victory target. In the second-ever Women’s Statewide T20 Grand Final, also played at Devonport Oval, the Wynyard Bluebelles fought creditably but were outplayed by North Hobart in a repeat of the 2013-14 decider. We thank the Devonport Cricket Club for hosting both Grand Finals, with Devonport City Council doing a fine job to have the facilities prepared to a high standard for both games. Representative Cricket

Our men’s representative team played two matches against Cricket North, while a historic first ever female representative match was played against Cricket North as well. The men’s team won the first representative match comfortably at NTCA No. 2, but suffered a reversal of form at the Latrobe in the second game, struggling with the bat. Cricket North claimed bragging rights in the female representative match at Westbury, with their spinners proving to be the difference.

I thank all the association’s players, host clubs, umpires and coaches for their co-operation in staging representative matches. Representative cricket plays an important part in developing and promoting local talent. Sponsors CNW thanks all association sponsors for their outstanding support of the competition. Major sponsors Commonwealth Bank, Kookaburra, Goodstone Group, Fosters Group, Sportspower Burnie, Crowe Horwath play a vital role, as do our other partners Ken & Patsy Murray, Dowling McCarthy Tyres, Tasfreight, Hivotech, Coastal Engineering & Belting, Commercial & Rural Refrigeration, Choices Flooring, Steadfast (formerly Saunders Higgins Insurance Brokers), Rod Glover Legal, Adam Brooks Group, Coastal Physiotherapy and Tassie Uniforms. Logos for all sponsors are recognised in the body of this Annual Report. Our media partner The Advocate Newspaper continues to serve up good coverage of our competition, and this support is consciously appreciated.

Umpires We thank the North Western Tasmanian Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association for their contribution and co-operation in 2014-15. In particular we thank association office bearers David Nettleton (President), David Hudson (Treasurer) and Leigh Marmion (Secretary). Several new umpires joined the association this season, with Matthew Woodberry, Andy Harris and Kris Denby taking up umpiring for the first time, and Darren Close returning from a long stint overseas. Former First-Class Umpire Darren Close joined David Hudson as Co-Umpires Advisor. Strong numbers meant that all 1st Grade, 2nd Grade, Female T20 and the majority Under-17 matches were officiated.

Darren Close was recognised as the Umpire of the Year, with Darren bringing tremendous experience and knowledge to the competition. He also had the opportunity to officiate in Cricket Tasmania Premier League games, and a Toyota Futures League match in Hobart. David Hudson retired as Co-Umpires Advisor at the end of the season. CNW thanks him for his many years in the role but trust he will continue to provide his substantial experience in officiating. Darren Close will be sole Umpires Advisor in 2015-16.

Future CNW is committed to a strong six-club pennant competition and will continue to engage in strategies to maintain such status. Further support is coming in the new season for club coaching structures and should flow from the recent appointment of John Hayes (formerly from Cricket Victoria and Casey-South Melbourne CC) as new State Coach Education and Development Manager. We look forward to CT’s increased influence in this area. Recently we determined to provide funding for new club laptops, which should provide a more user-friendly experience for 1st Grade scorers from 2015-16. This concluded season saw four clubs participate in the Crowe Horwath Female T20 competition after Cricket North managed to establish its own competition. Our clubs are appreciating that female competitions increase the depth of membership and it assists sustainability. The competition will benefit if Devonport can resume participation in the roster, with CNW and CT to support the club achieve this objective.

Summary I would like to express my appreciation to all Board members for their valuable input and contribution for the benefit of coastal cricket. Their experience is invaluable. I particularly thank our Regional Administrator Nathan Dennis who carries out his extensive administrative role with a quiet demeanour and admirable professionalism. With Regional Cricket Manager Adam Drinkwell and Game Development Officer Sam O’Keeffe we are well served by CT to encourage greater participation and youth development. Our coming Season Launch will be held on Friday October 9, with the 1st Grade season to commence on Saturday October 17. I wish everyone the best of luck for the 2015-16 season. Yours sincerely,

Cricket Tasmania/Cricket North West Junior Development Report

CNW Junior Club Cricket Structure Twenty junior teams across the 3 age groups competed in the Commonwealth Bank CNW Junior Competitions throughout the 2014/15 season. Burnie Hurricanes were able to field the most junior teams with 5, followed by Ulverstone (4), Devonport (3), Latrobe (3), Sheffield (2), Wynyard (2) and Circular Head (1). Latrobe re-entered the U17 roster and a 2-day game was trialled for the first time late in the season. This was met with a mixed response but it gave more players the opportunity to play the longer form of cricket. In the Under-15’s, bowlers were allowed longer spells due to changes to the restrictions and more Under-15 games were played on turf than the previous season. MILO T20 Blast was officially accepted into the junior structure and despite some teething issues, centres are now well on their way to being firmly established at Latrobe/Sheffield, Devonport and Ulverstone. Under 13’s The Under-13 competition is exclusively focused on participation and skill development. An exciting component of this age group was that players were provided the opportunity to play on turf and gain some experience. All clubs fielded teams (with the exception of Sheffield) with Burnie once again having 3 teams playing each weekend. Throughout the season, the players competed in T20 and 25-over a side games with more games being played than the previous season. Some of the highlights included 7 players scoring more than 200 runs with the bat and 5 players taking 10 wickets or more!! Well done to all players on your season and a big thank you to the coaches, parents and volunteers on your work and support for this age group throughout the season. Under 15’s

This season, six teams competed in the Under-15 competition with all clubs fielding one team. Throughout the season there were 16 half-centuries, 4 five-wicket hauls and every team won at least 1 game. It was great to see the players playing on turf most Sundays and credit must go to the clubs and curators for allowing this to happen.

At the completion of the home and away season (12 rounds), Burnie Hurricanes (1), Latrobe (2), Devonport (3) & Ulverstone (4) qualified for the finals.

In the first Semi-Final the Burnie Hurricanes defeated Ulverstone by 2 wickets in a thriller. Batting first Ulverstone made 7/157 from its 40 overs, with openers Finn Leary (51 retired) and Luc Redman (23) leading the scoring, and Ryan Walker (3-40) among the wickets. In reply the Burnie Hurricanes made a good start with openers Daniel Riley (26) and Joe Fryett (21) in good touch, but they lost their way in the middle overs as

Tyler Everett (3-31) cut loose with the ball. Slumping to 8/119, an unbeaten 39-run partnership between Riley James (31 not out) and Ryan Walker (18 not) was enough for the Hurricanes to reach the victory target with four overs to spare.

The second Semi-Final saw Latrobe score a six-wicket win over Devonport. The Orions batted first and made 6/142 from its 40 overs, with Matthew Wood (50 not out) and William Jago (23) leading the scoring. Julian Hicks and Charlie Castles took two wickets apiece for Latrobe. The Demons put together an accomplished run chase, with Heath Davies (52 not out) anchoring the innings and receiving support from opener Edward Bidwell (26) and all-rounder Blake Weeks (26). Sam O’Mahony was the pick of the Devonport bowlers with 3-20 from 7 overs.

After finishing the roster season unbeaten on top of the ladder, the Burnie Hurricanes capped a perfect season by defeating Latrobe in the Commonwealth Bank Under-15 Grand Final. In front of a good crowd at West Park, a strong bowling performance from the Hurricanes set up victory. Batting first Latrobe lost a wicket from the very first ball of the match and their innings was a struggle from that point forward. Opener Edward Bidwell (25) did his best to lift his team, but they were eventually bowled out for 89. Aaron Good (4-17) and Benjamin Plant (3-11) were the best of a strong Hurricanes bowling line-up.

In reply the Hurricanes lost only two wickets, chasing down the runs in the 21st over. Opener Joe Fryett was the mainstay of the innings, making 37 not out, while all-rounder Benjamin Plant made 19. Hurricanes all-rounder Benjamin Plant received the first-ever Commonwealth Bank Under-15 Grand Final Player of the Match Award, recognising his fine batting and bowling performances in the game.

Well done to all players on your season and a big thank you to the coaches, parents and volunteers on your work and support for this age group throughout the season.

Under 17’s This season saw 5 CNW clubs fielding a team (not Wynyard) and a team from Circular Head compete in the Under-17 Competition. The main roster consisted of 45-over One-Day games and the inclusion of a trial Two-Day round. A separate T20 competition was held during the January school holidays with the Circular Head Colts winning by 5 runs over Ulverstone in the Grand Final. There were some outstanding team and individual performances across all clubs throughout the main roster. Corey Briggs (Ulverstone) scored the only century for the season whilst there were also 28 half-centuries and 10 five-wicket hauls recorded, along with a hat-trick. Once again, the majority of games were on turf allowing all players to showcase their skills and abilities. At the end of the home and away season (12 rounds), Burnie (1), Devonport (2), Circular Head (3), and Latrobe (4) qualified for the finals. In a rain-reduced 1st Semi Final, the Hurricanes batted first and reached 3/130 from their 28 overs, with James Odgers (47 not out) and Jack McCulloch (29) leading the way.

Latrobe had a real crack at the run chase, with Zak Nicolle (40 not out) and Aaron Charlesworth (27) edging them ever closer to the victory target. However, with the required run rate increasing the Demons lost late wickets, they eventually fell short by 6 runs. Emmett Watkins and Josh Burns led the way for the Hurricanes, claiming two wickets each. Circular Head Colts defeated Devonport by two wickets in the 2nd Semi Final played at Devonport Oval. The match was reduced to 44 overs per side due to overnight rain. Devonport batted first and made 119 from its allotted overs. Openers Eli Sheean (27) and Cody Brown (23) led the scoring for the Orions, whilst Lewis Nicholls was the bowling standout for the Colts, taking 5-8 from 7 overs in an impressive display. Scoring also proved to be difficult for Circular Head, with the Colts slumping to 5/66 at one stage, thanks to excellent bowling from Devonport’s Justin Neubacher (2-22) and Kaidin Dargavel (2-16). But with Carlton Heres (49) anchoring the innings, and sharing in a 35-run sixth wicket partnership with Connor Smith (12), the Colts wrested back the advantage. Despite losing three late wickets Circular Head held their nerve and achieved victory with five overs to spare, reversing last season’s Semi-Final result. The Hurricanes batted first in the Grand Final at West Park and started brilliantly, with Brodie Hayes (19) and Alistair Denby (31) opening up with an 81-run partnership, helped by some wayward Colts bowling. With the shine coming off the ball the Colts bounced back, and claimed 5-20, with spinners Pearce Watling (3-17) and Liam McLaren (2-32) tightening the screws in the middle overs. The Hurricanes soon slumped to 7/120, but a 37-run partnership between Josh Burns (16) and Lachlan Barry (18 not out) eventually saw the Hurricanes record 8/165 from their 45 overs.

Not to be outdone, Circular Head openers Mitchell Heald (30) and Lewis Nicholls (42) also combined for an 81-run partnership, getting the Colts off to a perfect start. But a fine spell from medium-pacer Josh Burns (4-36) stalled their momentum, and they lost 4-9 at one stage. Bowling heroes Watling (35) and McLaren (29) came to the rescue again for the Colts, combining for a 56-run partnership to swing the match back in their favour. Despite the loss of three late wickets Circular Head held its nerve and achieved the victory target with one over to spare. The Colts had inflicted the Hurricanes first One-Day loss for the season, and in the process achieved their first Under-17 One-Day premiership, adding to their T20 triumph from earlier in the season.

Circular Head Colts all-rounder Pearce Watling was awarded the Commonwealth Bank Under-17 Grand Final Player of the Match Medal, in recognition of his 35 runs and three wickets in a tight game. Well done to all players on your season and a big thank you to the coaches, parents and volunteers on your work and support for this age group throughout the season.

MILO in2CRICKET

This season we had 21 Milo in2CRICKET Centres on the NW Coast. A total of 604 participants (12% increase) took part in the 8-week program across the centres. Cricket Tasmania continued its strong relationship with Special Olympics by running another centre for disabled students in Devonport. CT staff were also able to conduct promotional clinics in the schools to over 2700 children throughout the season.

Sam O’Keeffe and I would like to personally thank all clubs, schools and volunteers for their continued commitment and dedication to this vital program.

MILO T20 Blast There was an increased focus on establishing the MILO T20 Blast Program here in the NW during the season. It was very pleasing to see participation numbers increase as we had 147 cricketers running around the grounds during the week. Centres were conducted at Latrobe/Sheffield CC, Devonport CC & Ulverstone District CC. There is still plenty of work to go in getting this program firmly part of the junior pathway but I can’t stress enough how important it is. More resources and an even bigger focus will be put on the program next season as we look to grow our existing centres and open up new ones in Burnie and Circular Head. Female Cricket

Female cricket continues to be a top priority in Australian cricket. Here in the NW, our CNW female competition operated as a stand-alone 4-team competition after Cricket North established their own competition. The introduction of midweek games and double headers were just some of the things tried. A pre-season Indoor Competition for CNW teams was also held with games being played at Marist College and Ulverstone High School as a way of getting the teams together to kick start the season.

Unfortunately our girl’s only high school MILO T20 Blast had to be cancelled due to a teacher strike but opportunities were given to girls in primary and high school to attend after-school coaching sessions and play modified games. Cricket Tasmania’s Emerging Roar program saw girls from CNW clubs play for the NW Lightning at the Commonwealth Bank Intrastate Cup in the Under-18 and Under-14 age groups.

Cricket North West Annual Report 2014/15 – Page 17

The CNW Female Cricket Committee once again met regularly to discuss matters involving female cricket across the NW. Some exciting developments are under way for the 2015/16 season which will hopefully produce more female cricketers at our clubs and into the pathway system for years to come. School Cricket Ulverstone District CC and the Burnie Hurricanes continue to run primary school rosters in their region. Whilst the standard may not be high, it gives the boys and girls a chance to play more cricket throughout the season. The Milo T20 Blast School Cups for Grades 3-6 were another huge success this season. We had over 2000 participants take part in events across the NW in Term 4 and Term 1. This format of cricket is ideal for primary school aged boys and girls as its fast, action packed and everyone gets to participate. A national competition for Grades 5/6 boys and girls is now established and we saw teams from Stella Maris compete in the Statewide Final at Blundstone Arena in December. In March, we had our 2015 regional finals which will now see West Ulverstone PS, Somerset PS and Spreyton PS send teams to the Statewide Final later on in the year. In Term 1, we held a High School Cricket Challenge to find the best boys team in amongst our High Schools. We had 7 schools (9 teams) take part and it culminated in a Grand Final played at Acton Recreation Ground between Parklands HS & Devonport HS. Devonport ran out comfortable winners by 8 wickets. This program will continue to be a high priority for CT as we look to provide more cricket in our high schools. Once again, a team from the Circular Head Primary School Sports Association competed in the Northern Country Challenge. Commonwealth Bank Intrastate Cups The NW Coast was the venue for the Cricket Tasmania Intrastate Cup for Boys (Under-15). Summary Our junior competition continues to provide an outstanding opportunity for all players to showcase their ever improving skills. There is a clear pathway in club cricket for all junior players to take a ride on. We are always looking at ways to improve the experience for all involved and are grateful for the support of all our clubs. The establishment and further growth of Milo T20 Blast into our player pathway next season will be a huge asset. We now have a nationally branded product that fills the gap between Milo in2CRICKET and junior club cricket. I urge you all to support the new concept as it will be different to what has been offered before but is a format that the players will enjoy immensely. I would like to thank all our JDO’s for the hard work they have put in over the season and look forward to your continued involvement in junior cricket. Your support to the programs and to myself and CT staff has been great. I look forward to seeing everyone involved in this great game in 2015/16. Yours sincerely,

Adam Drinkwell Cricket Tasmania Regional Cricket Manager – North West

IN MEMORIAM

Cricket North West would like to pay tribute those we have lost in the past year. We thank them for the contribution they made to Cricket North West and offer our condolences to their friends and family.

BARRY JARVIS

Yeoman Cricket Club

Barry was a fine all-round sportsman, and played for Yeoman Cricket Club in an era in which the club won four 1st Grade Premierships. He excelled as a wicket-keeper and batsman in what was a very strong Yeoman line-up. He represented Yeoman from 1969/70 to 1974/75, and again in 1976/77, making 1149 runs at an average of 19.15, took 30 catches, and claimed three wickets. Barry made a vital contribution in the team’s 1970/71 premiership year, where he made 256 runs at 32.00. Barry demonstrated outstanding leadership skills from an early age, and captained the NWTCA Colts in the 1974/75 intrastate representative series. Team-mate Kevin Brown recounted that Barry could be one of the boys, relaxed and easy-going off the field, but once on the field he was in charge. Barry later moved to the North of the state, continuing to excel in a number of sports and making a valuable contribution off the field. After his sporting career ended, Barry made the move into local government, and until his death was Mayor of Dorset Council and President of the Local Government Association of Tasmania.

PAUL MULCAHY Wynyard Cricket Club/NWTCUSA Paul made a valuable contribution to coastal cricket as a player and umpire. He played 1st Grade cricket with Wynyard CC in 1972/73, taking 22 wickets @ 11.91, making 15 runs @ 3.00 and accepting 4 catches. He later went on to become a highly-respected umpire with the NWTCUSA, winning the Patron’s Trophy in 1989/90 and officiating in the 1987/88 and 1993/93 CNW 1st Grade Grand Finals. He made a move to Launceston in his capacity as a school teacher, and later was Principal at Glen Dhu and Invermay Primary Schools. Paul continued to develop as an umpire, and was elevated to the State Panel, officiating in 3 Sheffield Shield, 7 Domestic One-Day and 6 Second XI matches between 1999 and 2003. Paul also served on the NTCA Board, and was patron of the NTCUA until his death.

MEN’S REPRESENTATIVE MATCHES Game 1 – Cricket North v Cricket North West

Changes were made to the men’s representative series in 2014/15, with Cricket North West set to take on Cricket North in two matches for regional bragging rights, pitting each competition’s best One-Day players against each other. The first of these matches was played at NTCA No. 2 on the November long weekend. Cricket North won the toss and elected to bat first, making a blazing start to reach 0-75 at the first drinks break. But CNW fought back, with spinners Gary Miles (3-26) and Jake Libby (2-26) helping to restrict the Northerners to 9/174 from its 50 overs. Cricket North West lost three early wickets in reply, but an unbeaten 149-run partnership between Captain Josh Walmsley (102 not out) and UK-import Jake Libby (52 not out) guided CNW to an emphatic 7-wicket win with 31 balls remaining. Walmsley recorded back-to-back centuries for the weekend, striking 7 sixes in an outstanding performance, while Libby played the anchor role. Thanks go to Cricket North, South Launceston CC and Launceston CC for their co-operation in hosting the game. Cricket North West Men’s Team – Game 1 Coach: Scott Pearce

MEN’S REPRESENTATIVE MATCHES Game 2 – Cricket North West v Cricket North

After recording a commanding win in Game 1, Cricket North West entered Game 2 with plenty of confidence, taking on Cricket North at Latrobe Recreation Ground. CNW was forced to make a couple of changes in Game 2, with Nick Granger and Sam Fogg coming into the team, replacing Adam Drinkwell and the injured Jake Libby. Cricket North batted first and again made a bright start before CNW’s spinners again did the damage. Jacob Snare bowled an outstanding spell to take 3-13 from 10 overs, while Gary Miles claimed 3-30. CN slumped to 7/119 at one stage before the lower order rallied, and they eventually made a very competitive 206. Cricket North West lost early wickets in reply, with CN’s four-pronged pace attack wrecking the top-order. Justin Reeves (3-10), Rik Considine (2-14) and Kyle Bowie (2-8) were the chief destroyers as Cricket North West were bowled out for just 59. Gary Miles was the only CNW batsman to reach double figures, making 19. The series was squared at one-win apiece, which was a fitting result, and has no doubt fuelled the regional rivalry ahead of the 2015/16 series. Thanks must go to the respective team coaches Scott Pearce (CNW) and Jade Selby (CN), along with captains Josh Walmsley (CNW) and Dane Anderson (CN). We also thank the match umpires, team scorers Doreen Leary (CNW) and Nick Boon (CN) and Latrobe Cricket Club for their great job as match hosts. A big thank you is also extended to the players for their support of the representative series. FEMALE REPRESENTATIVE MATCHES Cricket North v Cricket North West

With Cricket North establishing its own Female T20 competition in 2014/15, there was an opportunity for CN and CNW to play a historic first Female Representative Match. The match would pit each competition’s best players against one another in a One-Dayer at Shaws Oval, Westbury. Cricket North batted first and were in some early trouble, slumping to 6/78 at one stage, before the middle and lower order rallied. Opener Belinda Wegman top-scored with 23, and with four other players reaching double figures Cricket North recorded 133. Emma Humphries took three wickets for CNW, and was well supported by leg spinner Zoe Lowry with 2-18 and Jane Riley’s 2-19. In reply Cricket North West lost three quick wickets, but a 56-run partnership between Emma Humphries (19) and Allison Kamphuis (17) got the innings back on track. At 3/82 it looked like CNW had the game within its grasp, but the introduction of Cricket North’s spinners turned the game on its head. Brooke Hepburn (3-10) and Emma Manix-Geeves (3-4) ran through the CNW middle and lower-order, with the visitors losing its last six wickets for just 28 runs.
