See you soon!

“I’ve learned that you can’t have everything and do everything at the same time.”

– Oprah Winfrey

hen the debate broke out over “Working Moms” versus “Stay-

at-Home Moms,” I felt like I was hearing a tape from twenty or thirty

years ago. Isn’t it about time we put the Mommy Wars to rest? Some

women do find a way to go full-steam throughout their careers. Others

amp up their careers in the beginning and then dial back when family

attention is required. Many women tend to the family by day and then head off to jobs in the

evening. Some women choose to leave the traditional workplace when they start a family, but

find new ways to thrive as “Mompreneurs.”

I have found there is no such thing as perfect work-life balance. Sometimes our jobs

demand every ounce of our energy and focus, and other times, family or personal issues require

our undivided attention. Workplaces need to be flexible to the needs of women (and men) if

they want to keep talented women in the pipeline and broaden the slate of leaders in executive

suites and boardrooms. Work shouldn’t always have to be a 110-percent-or-nothing

proposition.

SPW provides a forum for women of all ages and stages of their careers to network,

reenergize and share the challenges of today’s work environment. Our monthly events always

have a way of speaking to something relevant that’s going on in our multi-dimensional lives.

Join us for our next event on July 25 with Lisa Scottoline as she presents “Never Take ‘No’

for an Answer.” Lisa is known as a best-selling author, but did you know she started out as a

lawyer and only wrote part-time while raising her daughter as a single mother? Lisa is a perfect

example of how a woman can have a great job, be a mother and still reinvent herself in both

arenas. Don’t miss this one!

SPW Opens the Doors Interview with Barb Doyne, Financial Services Representative and Financial

Advisor at Brumbaugh Wealth Management Group

SPW: How did you first get involved with SPW/the Chamber? What prompted you to do so? Barb: When I returned to the workforce two years ago to build my financial advisory business, the word-around-town was that SPW is the premier place to re-establish my network. After one event, all that “hype” was confirmed. I knew that it wouldn’t be enough to just attend events, so I joined The Main Line Chamber of Commerce and Eileen Connolly-Robbins offered me the opportunity to get involved as a committee member of SPW, and now I’m on the SPW Advisory Council.

SPW: Which Chamber programs or events do you find most useful? Barb: The best features of SPW are the diversity of its programs and events and it also provides an opportunity to get involved. As a member, I get to work with other chamber members and the staff to identify new opportunities for the organization and help create its programs and events, which has allowed me to develop stronger business relationships. I personally enjoy the Main Line signature events, SPW programs and the Make More Save Mores Series™.

SPW: How would you describe your networking experience with other members? Barb: All of the members involved within the MLCC and/or SPW are there to enhance their business or grow professionally. The shared desire to grow and develop is a common bond that makes networking such a success through this organization.

SPW: How has your investment/membership in SPW/the Chamber contributed to your business success? Barb: As a member, my network has grown exponentially over the past year. Through sponsoring SPW events, Brumbaugh is able to truly enhance its brand recognition and connect with clients at quality events with unprecedented networking opportunities.

Eileen Connolly-Robbins, EVP & COO, MLCC · Founder, SPW

Blue Ocean Strategy: How to Create Uncontested Market Space and Make Competition Irrelevant By W. Chan Kim and Reneé Mauborgne

“Don’t compete with rivals—make them irrelevant” is the theme of this strategic marketing book. The authors, Kim and Mauborgne, discuss the fact that companies have always engaged in head-to-head competition in search of sustained profitable growth. However, they argue that in today’s overcrowded industries, competing head-on results only in a bloody “red ocean” of rivals fighting over a shrinking profit pool. According to the authors, tomorrow’s leading companies will only succeed by creating “blue oceans” of market space that hasn’t been targeted, instead of fighting over the current market space. Blue Ocean strategic moves (aka “value innovation”) create new value for both firms and consumers. Kim and Mauborgne present a framework that changes the way traditional business operates for a more profitable future.
