ABBEYFIELD WORKING BEE UPDATE14 ENTHUSIASTIC MEMBERS CAME TO JOIN OUR TEAM FOR ABBEYFIELDS LATEST WORKING BEE

On Saturday 16th we had a Working-Bee at Abbeyfield to work in the gardens. 14 people turned up and worked very hard.We planted trees provided by donations from Marg and Brian Harris and Terry Fuller plus lots of donations from many people. We cleaned up all the gardens and Rob Della-Mina on his bob-cat made things very easy and he moved a lot of earth and dug holes. We now also have a cleared space for the container and when it is installed we can shift things out of our bigger shed and provid room for the Men's Shed to set themselves up. Bob was terrific and if you want any excavating or digging call him on 85244234. (a little plug as he donated nearly a day free!!)Ron Fromm was there (so glad we still have him!!!) with his nifty little machine as well. Many thanks to all who did so much. We have planted lots of plants and when they all grow, hopefully it will look lovely and welcoming. Gerry Roberts.

GLENYS LESKE Textile artist Glenys Leske lives in Berri and she is a long term member of the Embroiderer’s Guild of SA, SA Lace Guild and a foundation member of Riverland Textile Artists. She has a strong background in fine hand and machine embroidery, traditional lace making and has dabbled in various other crafts including felting , bear making and lead lighting.

“I have a life-long interest in fabrics, threads and textiles. Members of my family taught me to knit, crochet and sew as a young child and instilled in me a desire to be creative.

I enjoy the challenge of using different materials (what is available and at hand), experimental techniques and artistic expression through differing textile mediums. Participation in the annual challenges issued by Riverland Textile Artists has given me the opportunity to be more experimental in my work and to pursue the challenge of creating naturalistic landscapes with fabrics.

“My landscapes are created from personal photos taken on trips around Australia and feature layered fabrics as a background overlaid with fine silk organza, hand and machine embroidery stitches are used en masse to give texture and perspective to the foreground.”

She said her works can include collage materials, and found objects as well.

Her exhibition will be held in the Red Hen Room from 21 May to 28 June.

Eighteen months ago my husband John and I left Williamstown to live in Birdwood.Among the many things we left behind, with much reluctance, was the Williamstown Community Garden.

At that time, in spite of all the sweat, sore muscles and many hours of work that our small group had poured into that garden, it was really struggling to survive and we hated to leave it knowing that the struggle would be even tougher for the remaining small dedicated group.

Today, following a most enjoyable Volunteers Afternoon Tea at Abbeyfield, I was taken on a tour of the Community Garden by a very proud and enthusiastic Joyce Glendenning. What a transformation greeted my eyes. The garden has greatly expanded and is flourishing with a variety of vegetables, herbs and flowers. It is loved. Each garden bed has its own quirky character or shows the artistic talent of its “owner”. It's a joy to visit and a credit to the Community Garden members.

It is also a great place to show off to any visitors one might have.

Have you visited it lately?

If you don't know where to find it, just ask at the reception desk at Abbeyfield.

New members for the Community Garden are always welcome, the benefits being:

Good fellowship while you work together,

Learning gardening tips from each other,

The economic and health benefits of growing your own vegetables

and the ability to help Abbeyfield by also growing produce for them if you wish.

For any queries about the garden, please contact Joyce – Ph.85246616 Ricki Reuter

We’d love to hear from you..

On a beautiful autumn day, with the beautiful brilliant autumn colours, and laterthe new growth on the burnt trees, made an enjoyable drive to Netherhill Farm at Gumeracha, for members of the Williamstown Uniting Church Garden Club. The Club had visited before when mainly strawberries were grown and sold, but new owners Alina Cowie and her husband have diversified the uses to the farm.

Alina explained they brought the property about 6 years ago, and have kept thegarden which we enjoyed wondering through the Fern Walk, where we found hydrangeas, fuschias and other plants peeping through the ground cover, and heard the birds in the tall trees. There are still (less) strawberries (now grown organically) which we were able to sample, and now also a Bed & Breakfast available, to add to interest. The recent fires burnt right up to their hay shed, which was saved, and the area is starting to “green up” again, which is the wonder of nature.

During the meeting some fruit samples were passed around to identify, correctly named by Leonie as MEDLAR. Birthday Greetings to Elsie McInerney and Barry Wilson. Lucky Raffle winners were Jenny Day, Leonie Tscharke, Connie Hodgson and Jean Randall.

Next meeting “At Home” at Uniting Church, Eva Street, on Monday 1st June at 1pm, when Colleen Modra will visit again this time her subject “Fruit & Vegetables”. Competition home grown vegetables, usual trading table, question time and after-noon tea.

G’day folks

Our Brigade has now responded to 94 callouts this financial year which is about the same as this time last year. Since the last publication we have attended:

2 x rubbish fires. (We cannot burn rubbish on a Sunday within the town ship area)

2 x minor cleanups from vehicle accidents

1 x vehicle accident

1 x grass fire

1 x shed fire in Lyndoch

Our training is ongoing with us running a Breathing Apparatus exercise with members in full BA going through an assault course around the station dragging a 75kg dummy.

Another exercise was run using our RCR equipment to hone our road crash skills.

We have recently had all our Road crash tools (Jaws of Life and cutters) serviced and they passed with flying colours.

Last Saturday our station held a course for plantation fire fighting aimed at dealing with fires within the tree plantations which we have many of around this area. This course was well attended and received.

Our work around the station is progressing with the Shed virtually complete and, along with the main sta-tion building, is now fully alarmed. This has released up another room within the station which is now being turned into another training room come office where we will be also putting up some historic memorabilia.

The Williamstown Cadets have recently signed some new members and have just recently had a joint evening exercise with the local scout group and these budding young fireys seem to be enjoying the activities on Mon-day nights being a mix of training with firefighting equipment and games.

Thanks very much – please keep safe.

=========================POLICE NEWS============================

SCAM ALERT

If you have received a phone call, text message or email from the Australian Taxation Office advising you that you are in debt to the ATO for back taxes, do not follow the instructions and send a Western Union money transfer to anyone unless you have spoken to the local Police Officer first. You are more than likely being scammed. A few locals have received the calls and luckily checked with police first and saved them self some lost money. The ATO will not call you about this type of debt they will send you a nice letter asking you to come and see them personally or make contact with an official government department.

House break-ins are occurring in the area and at least 3 houses have been hit with jewellery items stolen. This was in the daylight hours and involved a person walking the streets look-ing in windows and knocking on the door checking if someone was home. “He” even wore a fluro coloured shirt appearing to be a workman or meter reader. Don’t be alarmed if you do see someone matching this description as it may be a meter reader but he or she will have the correct identification. If you think he or she looks suspicious ring 131444 or 85246288.

Don’t forget the station number may divert to another area if the local officer is on a day off so best to use the 131444 if in doubt or urgent.

On another note not connected to policing. Not only is the kangaroo population exploding, the fox numbers are on the rise so if you own poultry keep them locked up at night. A num-ber of ducks were taken by a fox recently and 18 ducks are missing. If you see some ducks wandering around and appear lost let police know and the owner will be contacted.

2016 Barossa Calendar competition launched

The Barossa calendar will be back in 2016. Following on from last year’s overwhelming success, the Baros-sa Visitor Centre is pleased to relaunch the Barossa Calendar, giving amateur photographers a platform to display their work.

Jo Seabrook, Manager Tourism Services for The Barossa Council, said the response to last year’s calendar was incredible, with calendars walking out the door.

“The uptake was far beyond what we expected,” she said. “We ended up selling out, and that was after two print runs. The calendars were a popular choice for locals and tourists with many people sending them over-seas as gifts.”

Jo is encouraging all amateur photographers to start sending through their favourite entries for consider-ation.

“Last year we received 297 entries, and the calibre and quality of these entries was fantastic,” she said.

“The diversity of the themes has really allowed amateur photographers to capture the true essence of the Barossa. It is more than just food and wine, it’s about our heritage, our lifestyle and the opportunities that are created here.”

The photographic competition is a great way for the community to showcase the Barossa through their eyes. Entries into the competition close at 5pm on August 19. A judging panel will select the 13 winning images which will feature in the calendar and be showcased in an exhibition at the Barossa Regional Gallery.

For more information contact the Barossa Visitor Centre on 8563 0600 or visit www.barossa.com for an entry form.

MEDIA RELEASE B15/8

Community Banner CompetitionThe Barossa Council is calling on school students, artists, individuals and community groups to channel their artistic and creative skills and participate in a Community Banner Competition to help celebrate the 175th anniversary of Local Government in Australia.

The competition is an opportunity for members of the community to positively and artistically promote the theme, “How our Community benefits from Local Government.”

Mayor Bob Sloane has praised the Local Government Association for this initiative and is pleased Council is supporting the arts project.

“What a fantastic concept. Not only does it engage the community, but it gives people a voice, allowing them to create a visual interpretation of how they benefit from the services offered by Council,” Mayor Sloane said.

“There are no age limitations on participants so I look forward to seeing the diverse range of interpretations about how Council is benefiting and assisting the community. It will be an interesting activity and I truly hope people realise Council is more about rates and rubbish!”

Mayor Sloane is confident the Barossa community will embrace the community banner concept and encour-ages people to think laterally about the essential services offered by Council and the positive impacts these have on the Barossa community.

Concept banner templates and associated guidelines are available from all Council branches and libraries. Entries must be submitted by 5pm on Monday, June 22.

A panel will shortlist the top five banner concepts and the artist(s) will be invited to participate in a workshop at the Barossa Regional Gallery to be facilitated by a local artist, where participants will be provided with the opportunity to transform their concept into a work of art.

The winning Barossa banner will be displayed in the city of Adelaide streets from October 18. People’s Choice Award voting will occur online from October 18-25 with the winner announced on October 30.

For further information contact The Barossa Council on 8563 8444 or visit www.barossa.sa.gov.au

May 2015

Welcome all to another edition of my monthly news update.

Following the recent 2015 Federal Budget I am concerned about a number of measures which have let down local residents here in the North and Mid-North.

As always, I will be advocating strongly in obtaining the best outcomes for all constituents in the Wakefield electorate, be it health, cost of living, employment, education and other import-ant matters.

I welcome everyone to contact my office in regards to the Federal Budget and provide valu-able feedback, which will enable me to discuss these issues with my parliamentary colleagues and ultimately hold the government to account.

In addition, contact my office for assistance on grants, including the local sporting champi-ons, small and large business information and or advice from the likes of AusIndustry, and also support for local community groups.

I am also able to provide support letters for sporting/community based clubs and or organisa-tions in regards to grant applications.

For people looking for Justice of the Peace services within our office, services are provided on Tuesday mornings – 9am to 12 noon, Wednesday – 9am to 5pm and Thursday – 9am to 12 noon.

Please continue to access the electronic survey on my website, which enables me to specifical-ly focus on matters that are of utmost importance, when representing you in Canberra.

Please contact my website at www.nickchampion.com.au on these or other Commonwealth issues. Alternatively you can follow me on Facebook at www.facebook.com/nickchampion
