Welcome

It is my pleasure to extend a warm welcome to all delegates of the 2016 Regional Summit, to the beautiful City of Mount Gambier.South Australia’s second biggest city, Mount Gambier, is centrally located between Adelaide and Melbourne, amidst large softwood plantations and agricultural land set in a unique, ancient landscape of volcanic craters, caves and underground waterways. Renowned for our rich resources, great climate, pristine environment, innovative and exciting education and tourism opportunities, Mount Gambier is a prosperous city in which to live, work and invest. Council is seeking new opportunities for diversification and economic growth to ensure our region prospers into the future. We have to expand our horizons, acknowledging the risks but taking up the challenges for the community. The City of Mount Gambier is proud to host the 2016 Regional Summit demonstrating leadership and collaboration, engaging stakeholders to work together to advance the future of South Australia’s regions.

Mayor Andrew Lee The City of Mount Gambier

Welcome to the second Regional Summit, which this year has a focus on innovation and entrepreneurship. Our regions make a strong and vital contribution to the economic strength and social fabric of our state – contributing $25.5 billion a year to the economy and producing half of our merchandise exports. As I travel across the State, I’m constantly impressed by the local initiatives, successful partnerships and business transformations that make regional South Australia a place where people and businesses thrive and prosper.Today you will hear from a number of people who are paving the way in innovation, transformation and collaboration in their industries and regions. I hope you take away from this summit a valuable insight into ‘thinking outside the square’, gain some tools to help you realise your vision and be inspired to achieve your goals.

Hon Geoff Brock MP Minister for Regional Development Minister for Local Government

This year’s Regional Summit is an opportunity to celebrate the work of innovative regional entrepreneurs, and to learn more about economic development in our regions. The State Government supports entrepreneurship and innovation in our regions and is working to help diversify the South Australian economy, providing a stable base for job creation, ensuring we have the skilled workforce we need for future economic growth. Strong partnerships between educational institutions, Government, business and the community help underpin economic prosperity. Collaboration and partnerships in South Australia’s regions are integral to the way business is done, giving participants a competitive edge and bringing enormous benefits in promoting regional economic development. South Australians are fortunate to have ready access to three world-leading universities, and following this summit, I encourage you to reach out to their business and entrepreneurial centres to explore how you can work with them to take the next steps in your business planning.

Hon Susan Close MP Minister for Higher Education and Skills Minister for Education and Child Development
