15.20 PORT CEO CASE STUDY SESSION Redefining the role of Regional Ports Traditionally, regional ports are defined by location and

given their strategic position to resource fields, have predominantly serviced bulk markets with key cargo including coal, iron ore, steel, alumina, forestry and agricultural products. However, the traditional ‘bulk’ role of regional ports is evolving in response to increased and diversified freight demands. A number of regional ports are becoming attractive alternatives to capital city ports and similarly, regional port operators have started looking further afield and developing new markets, such as the offshore gas and oil fields, servicing rigs and supply vessels and containerised freight. All the while, the issues that remain constant are those of increasing capacity, access and competition.

The popular Port CEO session will highlight the latest port developments, infrastructure projects and explore the strategies each port is pursuing to improve business opportunities and freight efficiency.

14.00 SITE TOUR OF BELL BAY

“Bell Bay top port for state growth” (The Examiner, 8 Jan 2011)

The Bell Bay port has been identified as the long-term solution to freight growth in Tasmania in the National Ports Strategy, which was released early this year. Located at Bell Bay on the eastern bank of the Tamar River, 48 kilometres north of Launceston, the port is adjacent to a major Tasmanian industrial estate. The port is a major port for domestic and international bulk goods as well as container services.

Tasmania’s port activity will increase significantly over the next 20 years, with growth in total tonnage, bulk trade and container volumes. To meet the challenges of increased freight growth over the long term, the Tasmanian Government has identified a long-term strategy to consolidate container traffic at Devonport and Bell Bay, with the highest growth targeted at Bell Bay. The plan requires the development of the $150 million Bell Bay Integrated Gateway project.

Attendees will be coached to Bell Bay and returned to the Grand Chancellor Hotel at the end of the tour.
