WHAT IS REGIONAL IDENTITY ?
Regions of England have very different representations.
Normally, the North is thought to be quite violent and rough,
where the South is to be considered very middle-class and
aristocratic. Neither of these representations are exactly true, as
there are the middle-class parts of the North, and more
unestablished areas in the South. These regional stereotypes in TV
drama are called regional identity and they are how can audience
can interpret a character or setting by Mis en Scene aspects and
be given the connotation of that certain region.
TV DRAMA REGIONAL IDENTITY.
Example : Heartbeat
Heartbeat was one of the longest running shows on TV until recently. It showed the north in a professional way, however till kept to a lot of the scenery and representations that were seen in other TV dramas so as to make it another representation of Yorkshire.
The North of England is generally seen as: quite rural having nostalgic ideas, quite old-fashioned historic depiction friendly, not too hard-hitting mostly shown to contain the elderly These representations usually come from London media companies, so play on the
stereotypes and accepted idea about Yorkshire as farmland and small villages etc.
