Regional Employment Rises over the Year The Southern Region’s not seasonally adjusted level of nonfarm payroll employment totaled an estimated 771,600 in December 2016, up by 15,100 jobs or 2.0 percent, from the same month one year ago. In comparison, New Jersey employers added 47,900 positions (+1.2%) to their payrolls over the same time period. Across the southern region of New Jersey, the most significant employment advanc- es occurred in the following sectors: trade, transportation and utilities (TTU, +7,400 or +4.5%); educational and health services (+3,700 or +2.9%); financial activities (+2,100 or +6.2%); government (+1,400 or +1.1%) and manufacturing (+1,000 or +2.1%). Con- struction (+0.3%) and other services (+0.4%) each added 100 jobs while professional and business services remained unchanged since December 2015. The information (-400 or -4.7%) and leisure and hospitality (-300 or -0.3%) sectors experienced minor job contraction within the region. At the statewide level, the job growth leaders over the year were educational and health services (+19,700 or +2.9%), trade, transportation and utilities (+14,800 or +1.7%) and professional and business services (+11,100 or +1.7%). Financial activities (+3,400 or +1.4%) and leisure and hospitality (+2,700 or +0.8%) also added jobs dur- ing the period but at a lesser pace. Jobholding contracted in the government (-1,500 or -0.2%), information (-1,500 or -2.0%), other services (-500 or -0.3%) and manufacturing (-500 or -0.2%) sectors. Each of the Region’s Labor Areas Posts Gains Employment levels were up from the same month a year ago in each of the region’s labor areas. The Camden Labor Area (Burlington, Camden and Gloucester counties), which represents the majority of regional jobholding, accounted for a significant amount of the re- gion’s jobs gain, adding 12,900 jobs (+2.4%). Regional Employment Rises over the YearThe Southern Region’s not seasonally adjusted level of nonfarm payroll employment

totaled an estimated 771,600 in December 2016, up by 15,100 jobs or 2.0 percent, from the same month one year ago. In comparison, New Jersey employers added 47,900 positions (+1.2%) to their payrolls over the same time period.

Across the southern region of New Jersey, the most significant employment advanc-es occurred in the following sectors: trade, transportation and utilities (TTU, +7,400 or +4.5%); educational and health services (+3,700 or +2.9%); financial activities (+2,100 or +6.2%); government (+1,400 or +1.1%) and manufacturing (+1,000 or +2.1%). Con-struction (+0.3%) and other services (+0.4%) each added 100 jobs while professional and business services remained unchanged since December 2015.

The information (-400 or -4.7%) and leisure and hospitality (-300 or -0.3%) sectors experienced minor job contraction within the region.

At the statewide level, the job growth leaders over the year were educational and health services (+19,700 or +2.9%), trade, transportation and utilities (+14,800 or +1.7%) and professional and business services (+11,100 or +1.7%). Financial activities (+3,400 or +1.4%) and leisure and hospitality (+2,700 or +0.8%) also added jobs dur-ing the period but at a lesser pace. Jobholding contracted in the government (-1,500 or -0.2%), information (-1,500 or -2.0%), other services (-500 or -0.3%) and manufacturing (-500 or -0.2%) sectors.Each of the Region’s Labor Areas Posts Gains

(+2,100 or +7.3%) government (+1,400 or +1.7%) and leisure and hospitality (+1,300 or +2.9%). The transportation and warehousing industry subsector (+5,100 or +26.7%) account-ed for nearly all of the gain in TTU. Jobholding in professional and business services (-500 or -0.6%) and information (-300 or -4.2%) was down slightly over the year.

Employment in the VB Labor Area reached 60,700 in December 2016 and TTU was the area’s job growth leader (+1,600 or +12.2%) during the period. Manufacturing (+600 or +7.1%) and leisure and hospitality (+200 or +5.7%) each posted smaller gains. Government was the biggest detractor of area jobs reducing levels by 600 or 4.8 percent.

The Ocean City Labor Area’s employment levels reached 36,700 in December 2016. The area’s good-producing sec-tors (+3.4%), educational and health services (+2.1%), and government (+1.2%) each added 100 jobs. TTU employment was lower by 100 or 1.4 percent.

The Atlantic City Labor Area’s level of employment totaled 129,500 in December 2016 with TTU (+800 or +3.5%), profes-sional and business services (+600 or +6.1%), educational and health services (+500 or +2.5%) and government (+500 or +2.3%) experiencing job gains from the same month a year ago. Jobholding in leisure and hospitality was down by 1,800 or 4.9 percent.

• The region’s not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate improved to 5.1 percent in December 2016 from 5.4 percent in December 2015. In com-parison, the state’s unadjusted unem-ployment rate was lowered from 4.3 percent in December 2015 to 4.1 per-cent in December 2016.

• Among the counties, Burlington had the lowest unemployment rate in the Southern Region (3.6%). The coastal counties of Cape May (11.5%) and Atlantic (7.2%) had the highest unem-ployment rates in the region. As their economies have a substantial tourism base, the unemployment rates tend to be higher in winter months.

• During the fourth quarter of 2016, there were 44,786 residents claiming unemployment insurance benefits in the Southern Region. This represented 27.6 percent of claimants statewide. Regional claims activity was down by 1,780 or 3.8 percent from the same quarter a year ago.

Job Listings by Educational Requirement

During the fourth quarter of 2016, Southern Region employers in truck transportation, ambulatory health care services, hospitals, professional, sci-entific and technical services, food services and drinking places, credit inter-mediation and related activities, administrative and support services and gen-eral merchandise stores exhibited the most labor demand based on online job listing activity.

Concentrated in its two most populous counties, Camden and Burlington, employers indicated they were interested in filling positions for registered nurses, retail salespersons, sales representatives for wholesale and manu-facturing, retail sales supervisors, heavy and tractor trailer truck drivers and customer service representatives. Skills that were actively sought by area employers included customer service, sales, scheduling, supervisory skills, customer contact, budgeting, and proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.
