Message from the Manager/Curator In this issue we reveal our renamed flagship museum, now the Ken Seiling Waterloo Region Museum, and its rebranded logo. What an honour for the museum to bear Ken Seiling’s name - the Region’s longest serving chair of 33 years and long-

time supporter of heritage preservation in the Region. Before retiring as Regional Chair, Ken Seiling donated a collection of mementos acquired during his time in office. Staff have mounted a selection of these, on display in the theatre. They attest to the many relationships Chair Seiling cultivated during his years in office.Staff can’t wait for spring to arrive at Schneider Haus! Not only are they preparing to host the ever-popular Easter egg hunt, they’re excited to get the gardens planted with the help of young urban gardeners. This year, the Schtick garden moves over to the green space next to the Haus.Doon Heritage Village reopens on May 1. May is Museum Month, and Friday, May 18 is International Museum Day. This year’s theme is “Museums as Cultural Hubs: The future of tradition.” Museum members, what better time to use your reciprocal museum benefit of free admission to check out the cultural offerings of museums participating in this network! (See website for details.)National Indigenous Peoples Day is a time for celebration. Join our Indigenous partners at Doon for traditional music, dance, stories, and teachings as we welcome the summer solstice. Our historic sites are the perfect venue for both indoor and outdoor activities that support our wonderfully artistic community. We’re thrilled to welcome mosaicist Sophie Drouin as Artist-in-Residence (Schneider Haus) and John Harris as Musician-in-Residence (McDougall Cottage). And, the Paint the Grand event draws more talent every year. Make some time to visit our friendly staff and naturally beautiful spaces this season!

Collections and Curatorial News

Highlights from the collectionThe artifacts in the museums’ collection are significant for many reasons: the type of object; their connection to Waterloo Region; their age; or how they were manufactured or created. One of the most important things about an artifact is the story it can disclose about our collective history. I’m always intrigued by the number of stories one single artifact can communicate.

This lovely oil painting dates to 1900 and is a wonderful example of amateur art from that time period. The subject is a Clydesdale stallion, Redgauntlet, owned by Jacob S. Meyer (1855-1927) from St. Clements in Wellesley Township.

Jacob was a farmer, who served on Wellesley Township Council as Deputy Reeve and as a tax collector. Redgauntlet was one of several

Clydesdale stallions owned by Jacob; Cedric King and Fyvie Pearl were two others. The horses were used for breeding purposes and were advertised in local newspapers. As if the painting’s provenance and connection to Wellesley Township through ownership and subject manner weren’t enough, it was also done by a local artist!

The painting was created by Anna (Affholder) Koebel (1862-1942), the sister of Jacob’s wife, Catherina (1859-1941). According to the donor, Anna entered a convent at a young age, where she received her training in art. She then left the convent to care for her ailing father. In 1885, Anna married Henry Koebel (1857-1936) and together they had a family of nine children.

The story doesn’t end there; Anna also worked at Rosenblatt Artworks, located near the Koebel farm in St. Clements. The factory was started around 1864 and specialized in manufacturing altars and furniture for Roman Catholic churches. Anna was employed to apply gilt to the furniture pieces, which were then shipped across Canada. Unfortunately, the factory burned to the ground in 1932 and was not rebuilt.

Isn’t it amazing how many local stories can be associated with one small painting?! 2012.007.001(SH))

Curatorial newsAs a new year begins, our curatorial team is expanding! Robert Stanczyk joins us for six months as Cataloguing Assistant. Rob will work with our existing curatorial staff to continue the momentum we have been building with our ongoing collection digitization efforts. A 2011 graduate of York University in anthropology, Rob completed the Cultural Resource Management Diploma offered by the University of Victoria in 2016. Rob has worked in museum collections since then, primarily at the Museums of Mississauga and the Halton Region Museum. Rob interned at the Waterloo Region Museum in 2015 as part of the University of Victoria program, and participated in the development of hands-on activities which are now being fabricated for the museum’s long-term gallery.
