What Is Gasoline and HowShould It Be Stored?

    Liquid produces very flammable vapors

    Store at room temperature

    Store away from heat sources

    Approved containers Disposal

Kitty litter, absorbent clay, paper, orrags for minor spills

Approved containers for larger spills NEVER dispose into garbage, drains,

    toilets, or sewers

    Long-term storageadd stabilizer

    Precautionary Measures

Do notsmoke or light matches wheregasoline is handled or stored

Keep out of reach of children

    Handle outdoors for ventilation

    Keep containers tightly closed

Do NOTmix gasoline with kerosene ordiesel.

Store in a separate building, if possible

Refill generators only when engine is COOL

Fill no more than 95% to allow forexpansion

    Static Electricity

Caused by imbalance of electrons onsurface of material

Most commonly caused by contact andseparation of materials

Shock occurs with transfer of staticcharge

    How Do Refueling Fires Happen?

Static charge picked up when re-entering vehicle

    Touching nozzle without

    dischargingstatic electricity

    A spark ignites fumes

When a person re-enters the vehicle, there is contact between thepersons clothing and the car seat. This is where a static chargecan be picked up. If the person gets out of the car but doesnt

touch metal before touching the nozzle again, there can be astatic spark that will ignite the fumes and cause a flash fire.

    Three Causes of Static Fires

50% happen when the refuelerreturns to the vehicle duringrefueling and doesnt shut the

    car door

29% happen when the refuelerunscrews the gas cap

    21% happen for unknownreasons

    Precautionary Measures When Refueling

    ALWAYSturn off vehicle when refueling

STAYnear vehicle fueling port NEVERsmoke, light matches, or use

    lighters while refueling

    NEVERprop open the refueling latch

use only the hold-open latch on thenozzle

DO NOTget back into your car whenrefueling

    DO NOTtop off your tank

If a flash fire occurs, back away, contactattendant, and most important:

    LEAVE NOZZLE IN VEHICLE

    Guidelines for Gasoline Containers

    Use only approved containers

Set gasoline containers on the ground, donotleave in vehicletrunk, truck bed

Keep the nozzle in contact with thecontainer

Fill the container slowly to decrease thechance of static electricity buildup and to

    minimize spilling or spattering
