Small Park[neighborhood]

Streetscapee existing streetscape in Brodhead is very

vehicle orientated and oers little or nothing to bicycle and pedestrian trac. We are proposing a new streetscape that will be more accommodating to bicyclists visiting the city as well as improve the pedestrian ow and overall safety. Vibrant street signs would also be implemented to help direct a variety of trac and help give the city a sense of place. New street trees, benches, planters, and trash receptacles would be added to improve the current pedestrian conditions of the sidewalks. ese street treatments will incorporate aesthetic qualities and safety factors into the community. e Stiggal’s Station woonerf is based o of research found from A.Z. Guttenberg’s article “How to Crowd and Still be Kind- e Dutch Woonerf ” (1982), and provides trac calming measures described in the FHWA’s “Trac Calming: State of the Practice” (1999).

IntroductionBrodhead, Kentucky in Rockcastle County

presents an immense opportunity to develop enticing features for the community and tourists alike. Several phases of development are suggested for both the streetscape and park system. e land adjacent to the Dix River provides a natural backdrop for a park that could become iconic of Brodhead. Stigall’s Station park was designed in three phases allowing for an extended program that consists of a community center, walking trails, covered bridges, festival space and a preserved parcel of land to emphasize wildlife and the natural habitat. e streetscape accomodates a greater number of pedestrians and bicyclists as well as making a safer experience between automobiles and pedestrians/ bicyclists. Bringing pedestrian crossings away from the intersection gives both parties more space to travel safely. A living street or “woonerf ” will encourage trac calming and draw pedestrians and automobiles away from the busy intersection.Figures 2-5 aerial photo taken from Google Maps (2013).

Figure 7: e downtown streetscape will make the area safer and more appealing at night as well as encourage street closure for large festivals.

Proposed Gateway Between Park and Downtown

Eliminate Existing Buildings for Park-space and adjacent parking

Create 90 degree intersection while preserving majority of buildings.

Use existing gravel lot to park guests visiting park

Propose repositioning of American ag building

Addition of park and pedestrian space between roads. Potential market or festival space.

Transform plot into park space, allowing pedestrian transition between downtown and park

Shared pedestrian and automobile road implementing trac calming measures

Gateway between park and downtown areas

Proposed parking for park space

Shift Main Street to create 90 degree intersection. Allow re department access in all directions as well as implementing pedestrian crossing.

Create main axis on park’s edge, creating a exible space for both pedestrians and automobiles

Transform land into park space, allowing for a smooth transition between downtown and the park.

Implement parking on existing gravel lot. Downtown and park can be accesses from this lot.

Proposed Gateway Between Park and Downtown

Vegetated Pedestrian and Bicycle path using old road as base

Removal/ Purchase of plot with homes, open-ing connection plot to park space

Pave over existing gravel for visitor parking at park

Keep existing Intersection, add crosswalks and signals

e city currently owns a small park at the corner of Tyree and Albright. At the moment it is currently being underutilized, appealing to only a small portion of the population. e new park has been redesigned to appeal to all demographics of the community. e new design features exercise equipment that is elderly friendly and can be used by people of all ages. e basketball court will remain in the park and a seating/observation area has been added for visitors not participating. e park will also feature a series of community gardens that can be enjoyed by the citizens of Brodhead and serve as an outdoor classroom for students. A redesigned shelter was added to give the park a more modern look while keeping a more traditional feel so not to overpower the city’s rich history. A path system was incorporated into the design to give a sense of movement and enhance a visitor’s experience through the park.

e city of Brodhead currently owns two large plots of land adjacent to the CSX property. If all three properties are acquired, the area can be turned into a large park. e park has the potential to become the focal point and trademark of the city. e park can play host to a number of new events within itself, become a trailhead for new and curent bike routes, and be the start of a green network through and around the city.

e park has been designed in three phases so that the city does not have to raise funds all at once and may help the city acquire grants from outside sources. Each phase of the park was design to have its own point of interest. e most noteable, and closest to downtown, phase of the park hosts a large clock tower that can potentially become a trademark of the city making lasting impressions on visitors of the city. Such a landmark can help residents and visitors navigate through the city. Phase one will also host large open lawn, community center (located on train depot foundation), boxcar cafe, and riparian buer zone along Dix River. e riparian buer will contain a small pebbled beach so that visitors of the park may interact with the river and wildlife. e overall goal of this phase was to preserve and reect the city’s railroad history. Another noteable element within the park located in phase three, is a large waterfall that is visible from Main St. when entering Broadhead. e waterfall was designed to be visible in this way to create a gateway into the city. Phase three of the park was designed to attract the more active population. It features long strolling paths through wooded areas as while as trails that meander through dense native habitat. e second phase of the park, and closest to fairgrounds, hosts a large council, open lawn area for outdoor concerts, and parking to accomadate large crowds. is phase of the park can host large events and can be used in conjunction with fairground activities. e design of this park perserves current conditions and history, while bringing new life to Brodhead.

Being closest to downtown, this area would be the most oen visited and will host the widest range of activities and serve as a beacon for the rest of the park. In this area the park will boast a train depot welcome center, and shelter structure. Paths within the area would pay tribute to the town’s railroad history.

e middle section of the park is mostly wooded and is currently owned by CSX Railroad company. is part of the park would consist of leisurely strolling trails with educational signage along the trails. is area is to be preserved as forerst land, as it is meant to encourage relaxation through the use of native vegetation, wildlife, and landscape.

is large section of the park, furthest from downtown would serve as host to future events held in the city limits. It will act as a gateway into Brodhead. It is close enough to the fairgrounds that it can serve as overow parking, camping, or a staging/performance area to these future events. Land forms will be used to create views and new experiences.
