Technology in society is in a constant state of flux. Its role in education becomes increasingly significant every year. Technology answers not the

“what” or the “why” of education, but the “how.”

So, it stands to reason that, whenever a new era of technology emerges in our culture, the debate on how schools should incorporate this technology is bound to materialize.

Today, Timothy enters into a new era of technology in education. Our High School will be launching eQuip, a 1:1 iPad program beginning in the fall of 2014. Every student and every teacher will be using iPads for large percentages of learning time. Much thought, preparation, collaboration, study, training and prayer has gotten us to this point where we’re ready to enter boldly into this new era. You’ll read all about this program in the upcoming pages of the Reflector.

Why iPads? Why now?

Just like all technology- iPads are tools. And just like any tool, its value lies not in the tool itself, but in the worker using the tool. A hammer can be used to craft a beautiful house by a skilled carpenter or it can be used to destroy that same house by a destructive vandal. When seen in this light, the question of “why iPads?” or “why now?” doesn’t really come down to the tool at all. It comes down to the people using the tool.

Do you trust them?

Trust is important when you consider the place of technology, as well as the pace of technology integration in our school. Imagine if Timothy were just getting SmartBoards today. Even more ridiculous, what if Timothy were just getting film strips or VCRs in classrooms today?! iPads as a technology are just over 4 years old. Timothy began exploring 1:1 programs before iPads even existed! Who knows what the future holds for technology?

As a friend of Timothy Christian, you are invested in a school that values technology. But more importantly, you are invested in a school that values both the correct place and the pace of technology integration.

That, to me, is where this edition of the Reflector comes together. God has blessed Timothy in so many ways. He’s provided resources to fund big programs like eQuip. He’s put the right people in the right places at the right time to guide, prepare, and train our staff and students. Timothy authentically pursues our mission to develop academically prepared Christian disciples who embrace Christ’s call to transform the world. In order to transform the world, we need to be able to use the tools of our time.

So maybe just once, we’ll add a small phrase to our mission statement. We’re not just developing academically prepared Christian disciples. We’re eQuipping them. n

Tech Nation The Importance of Technology in Education By Matt Davidson, Superintendent

“Where there is no vision, the people perish…” Proverbs 29:18a (KJV)

This verse has served as a constant challenge for me. Although we rarely use words like

“perish” anymore in modern conversations,

we certainly understand the severity of the term. We shouldn’t be surprised that both history and current affairs support this biblical claim. A lack of dreaming, planning and innovation will ultimately bring about decline in everything from a “mom-and-pop-shop” business to an entire civilization. People truly are harmed when preserving the status quo becomes the driving force. Most of us have witnessed this first-hand in homes, organizations, churches and even governments.

Timothy Christian School has remained relevant and prosperous since 1911 because of God’s everlasting faithfulness. Over the course of a century, visionaries and pioneers have led our school down new paths—all the while following God’s leading. One of my favorite pastimes is to study the history of our school. I especially enjoy listening to some of the “old-timers” tell stories about our school. If you spend any time at all researching the history of Timothy Christian School, you will inescapably observe countless new initiatives, tough decisions, experiments and adventures. In other words, you will observe bold vision. Whether fully successful or not, each time the best interest of our students was at the core of our motivation. More specifically, our school has been driven by this one conviction: we have been commissioned to provide the absolute best education for our students while keeping Jesus Christ and His Kingdom as the ultimate focus.

With this unbending conviction as strong as ever, we will continue to adapt our vision to best practice and proven research. As you read through the pages in this edition of The Reflector, you will note that we are assertively yet strategically using technology as part of our vision for the future. Technological advancements have opened many

doors leading to advancements in instruction and learning. There is no doubt that many schools have recklessly hurried to a rather clumsy implementation of technology in an effort to be on the cutting edge. To the contrary, we have been quite deliberate in our approach. Our pace is sound. I am confident you will find the articles in this edition to be curiously engaging and profoundly stimulating. These are exciting times.

Innovation and change are always accompanied by struggle and difficulty, but the visionaries of our past have never viewed obstacles or challenges as stop signs. Today we represent another chapter in the story of Timothy Christian School. By the grace of God, we will one day also be weighed as a community of bold vision. It is interesting to consider

that past generations would have considered this edition of The Reflector to be largely science fiction. As you read through these pages, you will find our school’s growing relationship with technology to be nothing short of amazing. So sit down with a cup of coffee and read about the technological advancements coming to Timothy Christian School…read about the future…read about our vision. n

Day in the Life

There are many benefits to our eQuip program and the best way to give you a feel for the impact on what happens in our school is by taking you through a “Day in the life of Tim” who has a school-issued iPad.

Although this is a fictional school day, each of the class activities are completely possible. Some of these apps are already being used, like Edmodo, Nearpod and Smartmusic. We believe that this tool will change what happens in the classroom and change what

student work looks like. The iPad will provide our teachers with a powerful tool to help our students learn, grow and reach their potential.

EQUIP CONT. ON PAGE 8

TIME OF DAY iPAD ACTIVITY

Before School Tim reads the Bible using the app BibleGlo, YouVersion or goes online to read Biblegateway.com.

On the way to school Tim glances at Edmodo to see what is on his schedule for the day. Noticing the English vocabulary quiz, he pulls up StudyBlue, a flashcard app, to review.

Period 1 - PreCalculus Teacher asks students to use the app Desmos to investigate trigonometric functions to see how changing the equation impacts the graph.

Period 2 - Spanish Teacher uses iPads as mini-whiteboards using the whiteboard app so students can share their understanding of verb conjugations. Next the class breaks up to take a speaking assessment by recording a video of themselves and posting for the teacher to review later.

Period 3 - PE Tim is given a heart rate monitor that is paired with his iPad through bluetooth technology. The iPad app Polar GoFit records the heart rate and measures how hard Tim is working in PE. This will also be shared with the teacher so that they both know how Tim is doing toward the progress of a goal that Tim has set for himself.

Period 4 - Band As a trumpet player, Tim has been struggling to perform a piece of music. His teacher sends him to the practice room where Tim records his performance using the SmartMusic app. It gives him feedback on which notes he is playing correctly and incorrectly. His teacher will also listen to this recording so that he knows how to help Tim improve.

Lunch Tim’s iPad is stored in his locker because the school does not allow iPads to be used during lunch.

Period 5 - Chemistry Last night, Tim viewed a video lecture to prepare for an in-class experiment. Tim will video his group’s experiment and record their findings in Google Docs, where the team can later collaborate on the lab report.

Period 6 - English Tim prepared for class by reading and annotating his assigned reading using the Kindle app. In class, students will have a fishbowl discussion and Tim will take notes on the discussion using the Notability app.

Period 7 - AP US History Tim’s History teacher uses the Nearpod app during his lecture. Via the app, students are asked multiple choice or open ended questions so that the teacher can assess student understanding throughout the lesson in real time.

After school The Edmodo app allows Tim to check each of his homework assignments including: • Participating in an online discussion for English class by reacting to an article that

his teacher posted • Viewing a new video posted by his Chemistry teacher • Recording his trumpet practice using the SmartMusic app • Recording a video where Tim demonstrates how to solve one math problem using

the Educreations app

Why One to One with iPads?

New learning experiences for students using iPads are growing at an amazing rate. In the classroom and under teachers’ guidance, iPads can enhance and expand students’ ability to participate with their classmates in classroom discussion, assignments, or projects; to conduct research; to support their own learning needs, and to give them access to tremendous creative resources in numerous subject areas. Simultaneously, teachers can receive instant feedback on students’ progress and understanding that will help teachers to respond and redirect their lessons accordingly.

There are a number of choices for one to one devices. We decided on the iPad Air. There are many reasons why we chose iPads for our eQuip program. Educationally, there is more teacher training available for iPads than for any other device. Additionally, iPads have a great track record in terms of durability and support, their instant-on capability will save class time, the app market is enormous, the battery will last all day, the cost is minimal, and they are portable.

Preparing for eQuip

By the time our students get the iPads in their hands, the high school staff will have been preparing for this launch for over a year. Teachers received their iPads at the end of the 2012-13 school year through a grant from our PiE (Partners in Education) parent group. Since then, teachers have had

2014opportunities for training online over the summer and in person during staff development days throughout the school year. Administration has visited and spoken to a number of schools that have gone through launching a 1:1 iPad program to make sure that we are prepared both educationally and technologically. Over the past couple of years, we have also strengthened our wireless infrastructure.

What will be different?

There will be a number of things that will change as a result of students having iPads accessible throughout the school day. Students will have access to content resources 24-7 via Edmodo. So if students need to review information presented in class or find out homework assignments, they will be able to do that on their iPads. There are also numerous iPad apps that allow teachers to design lessons to increase engagement, check understanding of new content, and provide students with specific resources that will address their specific needs. The possibilities of what lessons a teacher can design is virtually endless. n

How well did TCHS prepare you academically for post-high school academics? Timothy provided a very strong academic basis for my time at Baylor. It offered a competitive number of college-level courses so that I had substantial credit hours from the get-go. Specifically, the math and science

programs at Timothy gave me a strong background for college classes. My history and English courses at Timothy gave me the writing experience that proved essential in almost every course I’ve taken.

How well did TCHS prepare you spiritually for life after High School? Timothy did a very strong job integrating Christianity into the regular coursework. I am blessed to

have similar opportunities at Baylor, a Christian, D-1 University. My experiences at Timothy have led to my interest in the intersection of faith and learning; I have specifically sought out professors at Baylor that can continue to provide this important style of teaching.

What do you feel are the strengths of Timothy Christian High School? Great holistic development; strong math and science preparation; caring teachers; lots of extracurricular opportunities

What recent changes at TCS excite you the most? The science wing renovation excites me the most...by a substantial margin.

So how’d we do?TC Alums reflect on their time at Timothy

Jasmine Stein 2012Wheaton College : SociologyPRESIDENT OF THE PRE-LAW SOCIETY; CAPTAIN OF THE VARSITY MOCK TRIAL TEAM

How well did TCHS prepare you academically for post-high school academics? I felt prepared for college academics. My preparedness is probably a product of the fact that I took several AP classes that were rigorous and prepared me in terms of work load and study skills for college courses.

FUTURE CAREER // Lawyer

What do you feel are the strengths of TCHS? I love that the teachers are so welcoming and available to students. I also love the sports and extra-curricular activities. Mock Trial, basketball, and soccer were a wonderful way I made friends and grew connected to the Timothy community.

What recent changes at TCS excite you the most? I love the lockers! And the grade school library renovation. I think that it’s great to also give more focus to the arts programs at TC.

How well did Timothy Christian High School prepare you spiritually for life after High School? Timothy always involved spirituality in every class in some way no matter the subject. It was also nice having chapel twice a week which I get neither of at Michigan. These things definitely helped me come into school with a different perspective than my friends though which I really appreciate. Going to a large liberal school is such a big change from Timothy, with so many opportunities to lose track of what is right and without my high school experience I would be in a whole different world right now.

What do you feel are the strengths of Timothy Christian High School? The community that Timothy creates. I was able to become friends with so many of my teachers and coaches and of course had great friends in my graduating class and the surrounding ones. You really get a sense that people care about you at Timothy and it’s not always like that at college. I also think Timothy has a great coaching staff in all the sports. Every coach I had in high school I think gave me the best opportunity to succeed. That adds to the reason I miss playing sports at Timothy so much.

What recent changes at TCS excite you the most? Timothy looks incredible compared to what it was...I just didn’t realize such great improvements could be made. Because playing sports was my favorite thing about high school I’m most excited about the new weight room and new equipment and uniforms in general.

ACCOUNTANCY SOCIETY; DIRECTOR OF STUDENT LIFE - STUDENT ASSOCIATION; UNIVERSITY HONORS FELLOW - UNIVERSITY HONORS PROGRAM; NORTHERN LIGHT AMBASSADOR - NORTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY AMBASSADORS

How well did TCHS prepare you academically for life after High School? As an international student from South Korea, TCHS prepared me very well academically. When I transferred to TCHS in the middle of sophomore year, I did not have adequate language skills. It was often difficult for me but all of the friends and teachers helped me learn, express my opinions, and gain confidence. I also have great memories and appreciation for the extra curricular activities at TCHS. They helped me make friends, learn English, and learn cultural lessons. Even though I was the only student in my class coming to NIU, all the soft skills I gained from TCHS prepared me to face academic challenges, and I am confident that I have demonstrated academic excellence at NIU.

What do you feel are the strengths of TCHS? I think the biggest strength of TCHS is the community atmosphere. As an international student, it was very hard for me making friends, but TCHS’s open community helped me feel comfortable and included in the community.

What recent changes at TC excite you the most? Science wing addition - I saw this change when I visited TCHS for an indoor soccer game, and it blew my mind!

Other comments? I am very thankful for everything that TCHS has done for me. I always say that TCHS is one of the biggest supporters of my success in the U.S.

How well did TCHS l prepare you academically for post-high school academics? Timothy did a really great job of laying the foundation of what college academics looks like. Ms. Park’s AP English class was the most beneficial class I took at Timothy to prepare me.

How well did TCHS prepare you spiritually for life after High School? Timothy does an amazing job teaching students about Christian history and faith, but it wasn’t until taking Mr. Lindloff’s Christian Thought class that I actually felt adequately prepared to defend my faith. He didn’t just teach us “what the Bible says,” but he also taught us what critics might say to make us doubt our faith and gave us reasonings and ways to respond. I went into Mr. Lindloff’s class a Christian, but I left his class an educated Christian. As for Mr. Wiener, he may have taught me how to be a Christian in the classroom, but I learned the true meaning of being a Christian by simply watching Mr. Wiener outside the classroom.

What do you feel are the strengths of TCHS? The biggest strength, in my opinion, is community. I am almost four years out of Timothy (WEIRD) but I still feel like a part of the Timothy community. That community is irreplaceable and I am truly blessed to be a part of it.

What recent changes at TC excite you the most? So every student is going to get an iPad?! That is literally insane. Looks like the days of breaking your back with a 200 pound backpack are almost over... I’m pretty excited to hear that Timothy is renovating the weight room, too. It’s about time!

Other comments? All the new additions at Timothy are seriously CRAZY! When I went back to visit, I barely recognized it! All the hard work and planning has truly paid off. It looks amazing!

FUTURE CAREER // A&R Representative in the music industry

How well did TCHS prepare you academically for post-high school academics? Fairly well. Overall it is a huge change but I felt prepared.

How well did TCHS prepare you spiritually for life after High School? I was able to grow in my faith and be able to discuss it intellectually with peers and professors.

What do you feel are the strengths of TCHS? The quality of the teachers and the community. We often take the teachers for granted until we get to college and have a bad professor and miss our high school teachers. The community is also a strength both between the students, teachers and students and the community as a whole. The sense of acceptance and encouragement is huge.

What recent changes at TCS excite you the most? I think that the 1:1 iPad program is extremely exciting. It shows that Timothy is taking notes on the swiftly advancing area of technology in education and it will invite new teachers to the school.

Other comments? I had some of my best days at Timothy. The teachers are outstanding and the administration is leading the school in a promising direction. I’m excited to see where Timothy grows in the coming years.

How well did TCHS prepare you academically for post-high school academics? Timothy taught me how to write for college level courses, prepare for tests, and manage my workload. Overall, I feel that the effort I put in during high school at Timothy Christian paid off tremendously when I transitioned into college. I am completely confident in my ability to succeed at college because of the habits and knowledge I gained over the four years I spent at Timothy.

How well did TCHS prepare you spiritually for life after High School? There is no doubt that being able to go to a Christian school where chapels are held twice a week, and God can be discussed in and out of class with faculty had beneficial impacts on me. I developed a strong moral code and was given opportunities where my faith was tested and strengthened. The foundation I built at Timothy, both spiritually and academically, is an irreplaceable part of my life that propels me toward the faithful and respectable person I strive to become.

What do you feel are the strengths of TCHS? The close-knit community and the strong academic standards to which it holds its students. Timothy is a place where you make life-long friends. The teachers always remember their students and love to reconnect with

visiting college students. The faculty truly care about the people they have spent years mentoring. Timothy students are trained to be the best they can possibly be and because of that are able to be accepted into fiercely competitive universities and pursue very high goals.

Other comments? My high school experience will always be a very memorable time in my life. The faculty, events, relationships, and so much more that I loved in my life were all centered around my school. I have nothing but the greatest respect for the many people who mentored and taught me so much more than just school material over my four years at TC. I am always a proud Trojan and look forward to being able to return to those halls again soon as an official TC alum.

How well did TCHS prepare you academically for post-high school academics? I think my AP classes were the most beneficial in preparing academically college. The workload and the nature of the work most closely resembled college classes.

How well did TCHS prepare you spiritually for life after High School? All of the Bible classes, especially the ones that I took during junior and senior year, helped me think critically about my faith and be prepared to give answers. My friends at college who went to public high school are just now learning a lot of the things that I already learned as a student at Timothy. Christian thought was hands down my favorite class at Timothy.

What do you feel are the strengths of TCHS? I think Timothy gives you a lot of opportunities to be involved and to be a leader. I was able to do a lot of activities that probably wouldn’t have been possible had I gone to a large public school. I love the relationships I was able to build with teachers. My education felt personal. I think that the spiritual education is probably the greatest strength at Timothy.

What recent changes at TC excite you the most? I’m most excited about the repainted lockers and the science wings. The school looks increasingly modern and relevant to today’s educational system.

renew A multi-faceted new program coming to

Timothy Christian High SchoolBy Brad Mitchell, High School Principal

SPECIAL FEATURE

The second of our two significant new programs is called Renew.

Renew is an 8 day term after first semester when students take courses that they could not take during a typical school year. The purpose of Renew is to provide service to local, national and international

communities, strengthen and build relationships, provide unique classes to students that cannot be taken during the school year, and provide internship opportunities.

There are three options available for students:

Internships

One way that we can prepare students for the future is offer them opportunities to spend some time shadowing and/or working alongside people in a career in which they are interested. Full day internships will be open to Juniors and Seniors. Students interested in participating in internships must apply in order to be eligible. Students will be encouraged to find their own internships, but if we have connections within the Timothy community, we will help students find internships.

We believe that Renew will not only benefit our students, but the entire Timothy Community.

On-campus classes

This spring, teachers will be developing courses that students can take that are not necessarily offered during the school year. Each course will be taught in two, 3-hour blocks, so each student will register for two Renew courses in the fall if they choose this option.

Some possible options for on-campus courses:

• Urban Photography

• Sociocultural Study of Doctor Who

• Repurpose clothing

• Film as Literature

• Apologetics & sharing your faith

• Digital video creation and editing

Service/Discipleship Trips

Possible service projects could range from serving the Humboldt community to partnering with a missionary organization in Guatemala. We hope to offer a variety of service opportunities to allow students to learn about other gifts God has given them outside of academics, athletics, or arts. We recognize that we are blessed by God and we want to be a blessing to those who need it. We also may provide discipleship trips where students can focus on their faith and relationship with Jesus.

Some possible service/ discipleship trips:

●• Partnering with Humboldt Community

●• Working with Habitat for Humanity

●• Partnering with missionaries in Guatemala

●• Partnering with service organizations in New York

●• Working with DuPage County and Chicago’s homeless

TC Girls Tennis Ends Successful Year with Five Players at State Tournament

The Varsity Girls tennis team followed up an undefeated 2012 season with a 2013 record of 19-3 and by sending five players to State. Not too shabby after losing six of their players from the previous year. The team started the tournament schedule with a 3rd place finish at the Moline Invite and then defended their title at the District 88 Invitational where all of our players took home first place medals at their position.

Capping off the great season was a 2nd place finish at York sectional where five players qualified for the State Tournament- the most we have ever sent. McKenna Byrne finished in first place in the Singles bracket and joining her at State were Doubles teams Annika Zeilstra & Sarah Dirkse and Erin Van Kampen & Abigail

Kumar. The IHSA State Tennis Tournament has only one division for the 315 competitor schools. This means that Timothy competes against all schools- regardless of size. McKenna Byrne won two rounds at the state meet while the two doubles teams fought well but lost three very close matches.

Congratulations to all our players and Coach Keith Mills for another fabulous season!

Soccer Caps Off Another Successful Season

The men’s soccer program produced more hardware this year. The team set pre-season goals of defending their 2012 Regional Title and winning a Sectional Championship. Both goals- the 6th Regional Title and the 4th Sectional Title in program history- were accomplished. Freshman Josh Anderson’s goal vs. Montini was enough to put the Trojans over the Broncos to win the Sectional Title and earn a spot in the IHSA’s “Elite 8.” One goal was all that kept the team from another trip down state this season. Congratulations on another terrific season! n

ArtsFine Arts Week

Fine Arts Week, held in March, is the highlight of the year for the Fine Arts Committee.

The week is dedicated to the celebration of the arts. Students’ artwork, including ceramics, photography, acrylics, watercolors and drawings are put on display. The committee also brings in professionals to judge, not only in these areas, but also in dance, vocal performance, drama and musical presentations.

Showcases are held each night for the various arts. The Fine Arts committee also hosts a variety of daytime assemblies featuring performers who represent a wealth of talents. The whole week is a wonderful time in the life of the school.

work/solo and group performances in band, orchestra, vocal, art, photo, and writing. This is a fantastic learning experience for our budding artists and performers.

Winners of these various categories performed in our now-annual “Best of TC” celebration during Fine Arts week. It has become a highlight of the week!

Fine Arts week assemblies are an important part of our students’ liberal arts education—exposure to a variety of art forms they may not seek out on their own.

We are proud of the legacy of celebrating the arts that John Harkema created, and we do our best to carry it forward in a sustainable way.

We are very grateful for the support of the administration and the teachers in all of these endeavors. n

Dear Timothy Community,

A decade ago, I followed God’s call to Timothy. As a 5th grade language arts teacher fresh out of college, I was excited to enter into this great community that I had heard so much about from my girlfriend Stephanie Day.

Two years later, God called me into the role of Timothy’s first ever Marketing Director. For the past eight years, I’ve been elated to work in this capacity. God has definitely wired me to introduce people to Christian education. It’s a calling that I take very seriously and I love doing it.

One year later, God called me to jump from the 8th grade A team soccer coach to become the varsity coach. It’s been amazing to lead young men in competition and to play “Swift and Beautiful for Thee.”

Over the span of the last 10 years, I got married, had two kids, got my master’s degree, won 97 soccer games with Coach DK with me every step of the way, and played a part in helping TC grow and maintain enrollment in a tough economy. This year, to see things come full circle; it has been one of the joys of my life to see my daughter Sawyer enrolled in Timothy’s amazing preschool program.

And now, today, God has called the Gesch family to a new adventure. We will be relocating to Eastern Christian School in New Jersey in the suburbs of NYC. I’ll be serving as EC’s director of Marketing and Admissions.

This opportunity is something I wasn’t pursuing, and something that I initially resisted because of our family’s deep love of Timothy. But, through prayer and guidance from trusted friends and colleagues, it slowly but surely became clear that God was calling us to the next chapter in our lives.

Of course, we’re a jumble of emotions. We’re excited for this adventure. We’re nervous to leave the only home, work, (and time zone!) we’ve known as a family. We’re comforted to be relying on God’s plan for our family.

I want to thank the Timothy Community for everything. Thanks to Timothy teachers, administrators, board members, parents, coaches, the amazing soccer family, and my former 5th graders (who are now in college!) for allowing me to play a small part in this community. A special thanks to Tim Hoeksema, Dan Van Prooyen, and Matt Davidson for being amazing bosses and godly leaders that helped to mold me into someone who is ready to accept a call like this.

Our prayer for Timothy Christian Schools is that this place will continue to be a place that develops academically prepared Christian disciples to the glory of God. n

Thank you, and God Bless, Rudi, Stephanie, Sawyer and Xander Gesch

What comes to mind when you consider whether or not to give a donation? Why do you give? What motivates you? How do you feel when you give? How do you feel when you don’t give?

As a TCS alum and parent I have been asking myself these questions. As Director of Advancement at Timothy I have the privilege of witnessing many types and sizes of gifts given to our school from many different people. I am always amazed at the generosity of our constituents and I enjoy hearing their stories. I love learning the reasons why they give to TCS. For almost every constituent, giving is deeply rooted in their beliefs and in what they have learned about the practice of giving.

I am thankful for what has been taught and modeled to me regarding giving from my parents, pastors, and fellow Christians. We can also learn much about giving from searching the scriptures and from reading books written by Christians who have studied this topic. Here is some of what I have learned from the Bible:

“The earth is the Lord’s, and all it contains, the world, and those who dwell in it.” - Psalm 89:11 God owns everything by virtue of His being the Creator of the Universe. He owns the universe. He owns the earth. He owns all things on the earth. When we think about this we realize that we do not own anything. Everything we have is on loan to us from God.

“Knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.” - I Peter 1:18-19 We belong to God because we have been bought by the blood of His son Jesus Christ. I am reminded that I am not my own. I belong body and soul to Jesus Christ both in this life and in the life to come in eternity. This is made possible because of Jesus’ sacrifice for me and for you.

Why Give? Why Not?Where your treasure is, there your heart will be alsoBy Bob Venhousen

“Instead they were looking for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.” - Hebrews 11:16 Heaven, not earth, is my home. The things of this life are temporary. It’s true that when we have an eternal perspective the things of this life fade and become far less important to us.

“As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” - I Peter 4:10 God commands it. We are called by God to be His stewards. We are God’s money managers. We are always better off just following God’s commands than trying to justify our actions or having to be convinced of what we should do. I believe that these apply to our time and talents from God as well as our money. Oswald Smith sums it up very well when he states that “It’s not how much of my money will I give to God, but how much of God’s money will I keep for myself.”

“And now, brothers and sisters, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity.” - 2 Corinthians 8:1-2 We rob ourselves of great joy when we choose not to give. When we give with a thankful heart, the right perspective, and with the proper motivation it gives us great joy and satisfaction.

I thoroughly enjoy my work at TCS and I am so appreciative of our many faithful donors and constituents who regularly bless us with their gifts of time, talent, and money. We could not do it without you.

“From the perspective of the gospel, fundraising is not a response to a crisis. Fundraising is, first and foremost, a form of ministry. It is a way of announcing our vision and inviting other people into our mission. Vision and mission are so central to the life of God’s people that without vision we perish and without mission we lose our way.” - Henri Nouwen

Danny Huizinga (‘11) is Turning Point USA’s Columnist of the Year. He is currently a junior at Baylor University, pursuing three business majors in Economics, Finance, and Business Fellows with a minor in mathematics. Danny has been one of Turning

Point USA’s most dynamic and insightful columnists since they began their program. Danny writes a political blog called Consider Again located at http://consideragain.com.

Povas Miknaitis (‘06), currently a student at the University of San Diego, was sent to Afghanistan as a Marine rifleman after an initial deployment to Iraq in 2008. In Afghanistan,

an IED blast sent shrapnel flying; some hit his arm and abdomen; larger pieces struck his face, sustaining major injuries. It was in a hospital, recovering from the blast in 2009, that Miknaitis heard

about an FBI training program for injured soldiers called Wounded Warriors. In 2011, when the program was launched, he landed a spot in a program that seems to be taking off.

He began an internship researching cases for ongoing FBI investigations. “I was always interested in law enforcement,” he says, “and the internship program really let me learn a lot more about it. It got me employed while I was still recovering.”

Jonathan Kumar (‘07), University of Michigan graduate, launched FoodCircles, a website where people choose the best group deal offered by restaurants. When diners spend money, restaurants give about 10 percent to FoodCircle’s

“Buy One, Feed One” movement, supplying sack suppers to Grand Rapids-based Kids Food Basket or packaged meals to children in Kenya.

To sign up, users may visit foodcircles.net, to request a free account or donate to immediately receive an account. Free mobile apps for Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS phones and tablets will be released in the near future. n

SAVE THE DATE!Timothy Christian Schools Fall Homecoming

Homecoming is moving from Winter to Fall.

Homecoming night for the 2014-15 school year will center around a soccer game vs. rival Illiana Christian on Friday, September 12th! We expect a huge representation from both school communities!

September 12, 2014

Advantages of Homecoming as a

Fall Event

• The entire campus will be used throughout the weekend. Imagine a homecoming that is not over-crowded and over-heated.

• Current high school students, Middle Schoolers, Elementary school students and Alumni can all be involved in the festivities (Friday Night Lights proved this).

• A Fall Homecoming will change from a weekend night event to a full weekend event.

• None of the traditional events around Homecoming will be lost.

• All reunions will be scheduled for the Saturday night of the homecoming weekend.
